Original Post:
Happy December! Last week I posted about an idea I'd read on FB for a reverse advent calendar, where instead of receiving something for the 24 days leading up to Christmas, you do something small for someone else each of those days. The idea is that if we work together and make small individual donations, we as a large group can positively impact multiple good organizations this month.
I will bump this thread each day through December 24 and add a link to 1-2 new charities (since we had more than 24 charities posted) at the top of the OP each day. (This makes more sense to me than having a new thread each day, so people who aren't on the board every day don't have to go hunting for multiple threads.) If you feel moved to do so, please consider donating a small amount to the suggested charities. Even $1 can make a big difference if a bunch of people are doing it.
*If you are concerned about putting yourself on multiple mailing lists this way, consider creating a new email address just for the purpose of this activity. You can shut it down when the month is over.
*The charities named will all be those suggested by peas in the original thread. While I will glance at each website posted to see if it appears legitimate, I am in no way suggesting that I have personally thoroughly vetted each of these charities. If you have concerns, please use your own best judgement.
*No need to post whether or not you've donated each day. That's entirely your business.
*A personal note - I will be pulling the suggested charities directly from the original thread. If you made a suggestion but did not include a direct link and a blurb about the charity's mission, please consider going back and editing your post to include those things. This will make it easier for me to include your charity in our list.
So with all that said, let's get started on making an impact!
We're going to start off the month with a charity founded and run by one of our own, and another with which several peas are involved.
Kaitlyn Vallery Foundation (aka Kaitlyn's Promise) from cherivall
CASA first suggested by mom , but several peas are volunteers.
Let's get out there and do some good, peas! Remember to check this thread each day for a new charity link, and consider a small donation. Thanks to everyone.
December 24th - I hemmed and hawed about which charity I would choose, but finally decided on Little Kids Rock.
Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit that is dedicated to building a world where kids can live rich, purposeful lives by ensuring that all public school children have the opportunity to unlock their inner music makers. We do this by
partnering with school districts, training public school teachers in our innovative curriculum, and donating all of the instruments and resources necessary to run rockin’ music programs.

December 7th. Finally the weekend! Today we'll support Icing Smiles Canada from cakediva .
Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. We understand that the simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Our goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time. We feel strongly that siblings are the unsung heroes in these families. They consistently put their own lives on hold and sacrifice the attention of their parents while their families are helping the medical child.
Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger. Memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why we say, "It is so much more than a cake."

December 6th. Happy Friday! Today we'll be supporting Modest Needs from sleepingbooty . She says:
... a very, very important American organization with amazing transparency. This is an organization that helps people not go from having a roof over their head to being homeless, keep a running car to be able to continue to go to work instead of finding themselves unemployed due to a broken car, electricity bills paid during winter, etc. for people who are legitimately struggling but are just above the poverty line and don't qualify for government help. This is a matter of small donations directly impacting someone's life and avoiding slipping into poverty. Modest Needs heavily vets the applicants and pays the bills of the applicants directly (not a Go Fund Me type of thing).

December 5th: PAWS Adoption Center from J u l e e .
PAWS depends exclusively on donations to help home as many animals as possible. We are planning on saving the lives of over 400 animals this coming year. We are making a promise to our animals that we will treat them like family until they become a part of yours.
PAWS is the last chance for many of the animals. Over 95% of them have been pulled from traditional shelters, and, although they were highly adoptable, were at extreme risk of being euthanized.
Many have never had veterinary attention. PAWS makes sure they get what they need. Once they are healthy, these pets are adopted into loving, forever homes.

The Service Dog Project (SDP) has donated over 160 Great Dane service dogs to people with balance issues due to neurological diseases or war injuries to assist them in achieving greater independence. Our working service dogs have received extensive training for balance and mobility. Our Great Danes provide a valuable service and enhance the quality of life for their partners.
Veterans, first responders, and their families are given first preference for a service dog.

We're going to start off the month with a charity founded and run by one of our own, and another with which several peas are involved.
Kaitlyn Vallery Foundation (aka Kaitlyn's Promise) from cherivall
We established Kaitlyn’s Promise to help more adults and teens understand the dangers of inhalant abuse and the consequences of making bad choices when Kaitlyn died due to accidental drowning because of inhalant abuse
As of 2014, we are now the Kaitlyn Vallery Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to bring awareness of the dangers of drug use and the long reaching effects of your choices.
We provide the following resources to young people and their families:
• Kaitlyn’s family helps educate others by sharing her story with young people through presentations at schools in Houston and the surrounding area.
• We provide free drug screenings to parents who suspect their children may be using illegal drugs but are unable to afford the cost.
• We also offer three $1000 scholarships to local high school students who successfully rose above poor choices – theirs or others – and changed their lives for the better. Previous recipients overcame their own or their parents’ drug use, survived serious illnesses, and are on their own as a result of their parents’ actions.
If her promise can get just one kid to STOP doing this then Kaitlyn’s death will not have been in vain.
Full disclosure .. I am Kaitlyn's mom and a long time pea (though I mostly lurk.. some of you may remember the night we lost her .. we received so much love and support from the Peas, my family still talks about it)
To date we have given over $40,000 in scholarships, spoken to thousands of students and continue to share Kaitlyn's life in the hopes that we prevent another family from going through what we have gone through
