Help me with some ideas. I don't have kids at this elementary school anymore but this is the school where I do substitute teaching so I do see her every day that I'm down there. I don't know her at all, but she's very friendly, always smiling, etc. And we all know how crossing guards put their lives out there every day with all the crazy drivers! So I thought I'd like to get her a little something to go along with a note that I'd put in the bag saying how much I appreciate her keeping our kids safe, etc. But what to give her? I have no idea if she drinks coffee, don't know if she likes chocolate (Starbucks gift card, or some of those heart-shaped Dove chocolates were always my go-to for teachers)...honestly, I don't know anything about her at all. It's not the sort of job that lends itself to standing around and chatting with people. Anyone have any brilliant ideas? If not, I'll probably end up going with some chocolate and the note. If she doesn't eat chocolate herself she probably has a family member who does.

I would still do a Starbucks gift card. Even if she does not drink coffee there is always other drinks there and sandwiches or treats. It is hard to be creative when you do not know someone at all. I am sure she will be thrilled you are giving her a card and gift, that is very sweet.

a small ($10) gift card to Target. We currently have 3 or 4 Starbuck's cards at home that will never get used because we do not go there.

An Amazon gift card would also be a good choice.

Money or a gift card. Nothing she has to hold or carry if you are giving it to her while she is on the job.
And, you don't need brilliance in this situation of gifting. Money.

A hot water bottle with a sweater wrap thing.. she would put hot water in it in the morning and it will stay warm in her car... she can snuggle it in between students crossing...
Not water bottle to drink out of... but old fashion hot water holder thing... the bladder thing.. they come with sweaters now...
There is 1 for 9.99 on Amazon...
Different but sooo very useful!!

I was going to suggest something like this or the disposable hand warmers with a fun note or a nice scarf or warm hat! (Assuming you are in a colder climate, LOL!)

I probably wouldn't give chocolate to someone I didn't know well. I'd worry about dietary restrictions.
I think a Target card is perfect because you can use it in store or online and everyone can find something at Target.
I think it is very sweet of you to remember the crossing guard at Christmas. I think she'll be pleased w/ whatever you get her.

I have a recipe for homemade hot chocolate that my family loves and my friends request. It stores well in a baggie and lasts a long time. Maybe some of that and some marshmallows. I often gift it to my neighbors and they request more.

I suspect she would appreciate cash, no matter the amount, more than anything, and that the written note will be most special!

I would buy her a Starbucks hot chocolate and then give her a card if she accepts the drink.

What about those little lights that hook in your zipper pull, or a good quality small flashlight? I’m assuming it’s not fully light at some point (morning or afternoon) but even if it isn’t it’s nice to have that extra protection of a flashing light.

I would buy her a Starbucks hot chocolate and then give her a card if she accepts the drink. It would be rude not to accept the drink, so that isn't a good indicator of if the person likes Starbucks!

I don’t accept drinks, because I don’t drink sugar and food? Well I don’t like most people’s Homemade stuff.

I would give a gift card to Target, Walmart or a restaurant that has a variety of food (Chili's, Red Robin, etc...).
I don't care for Starbucks, so I only give that if I know for certain that the recipient will use it.

I would not give chocolate and would not give a starbucks giftcard. I would give cash. Cash is so much better than a gift card, they can spend it on whatever they want. I think a lot of people would never use a Starbucks giftcard, and a lot of people don't eat chocolate.
I honestly don't get the allure of gift cards, just give cash if you don't want to give a present.

I usually do Panera’s as there is one near the school. They can get coffee, breakfast sandwiches or lunch.

I know a lot schools have ban giving teachers gifts.

Same. I don't like/drink coffee and there's not a single treat or drink I can drink there. Something more generic so they can still get some coffee if they want it at target works.

A really nice camp chair. Like a Coleman one. Sturdy seat, strong frame. And a camp heater.

My cousin is a crossing guard. Once school is in the guards go for coffee at McDonalds or Burger King. If your guards do that, a gift card to there would be good. Otherwise, I would go with Walmart or Target. Guards don’t make much money and I think they can use money for what they need more than stuff.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I'm going to go with a Target gift card since we have a Target right up the road. Plus the note I'll put in. And since I do have some of the small Dove chocolates here at home I might toss in a handful just because. She can always give them to someone else if she wants.

So @megmc Why would you buy her a hot chocolate and then give her a card if she accepts the drink, when you state that you don't accept drinks or food that you don't like or can't eat. You don't accept drinks, SO, why expect this of the crossing guard? Care to explain?
