I have bought a few professional fonts for personal use. On my old desktop, the glyphs can be used with Illustrator CS2. However, I can also see them in the character map on my old desktop. I have used them extensively in the past.
I don’t have Illustrator on my new laptop, but I can access some glyphs through the Silhouette software (I have the Business version). However, there are two of my pro fonts (Samantha and Monroe) that have glyphs which do not show up in the character map or in the Silhouette software. I have tried every option in the character map’s drop down menu that there is. I can’t find the glyphs.
On the Laura Worthington site, she talks about a few programs to access the glyphs, but I thought the glyphs should at least show up in the character map even without a separate program. Is there something about Windows 10 that limits viewing or accessing all of the glyphs in the character map? If they don’t show up in the character map, can programs like Illustrator even access them?
I would really appreciate help if anyone has any suggestions. I want to resolve this before my old desktop dies.
Thanks!

I don’t know about the glyph issues with Windows 10, but have you heard of Inkscape? It’s a free graphics program that you can download. I used it when I got my original Silhouette since their software was so limited at that time. It might be worth a try to see if you can access your font glyphs.
I have the Samantha font. If there’s anything you need right away, I could create it and send you a file. Let me know...

Did you install the OTF and not the TTF? With paid fonts and some free versions you will be sent both. TTF has some of the glyphs and OTF has all the glyphs. If that doesn't work try opening the font in a font program like NexusFont (freeware Win10 compatible) and see if you can view all the fonts. If that doesn't work try contacting the place you purchased the font and they might be able to send you a new updated version. I can't remember where I read it, I am sorry, but I read the new Silhouette software does have a bug with something to do with font rendering or something to do with fonts. I can't remember. I don't know if it has since been updated. I read the article two months ago. I know Silhouette was aware of it. That might be the issue too. I would just take a peek over at Silhouette's download page for Studio and look at the history notes of the recent releases to see if that is the issue. Hope that helps.

Thanks to both of you.
I have Photoshop Elements. I haven’t checked to see if it can access the glyphs, but the older version I had been using could not. I am assuming that if the character map can’t see them, neither can any of the programs in Windows 10. The instructions on Laura Worthington’s site don’t seem to work with this version. The glyphs don’t show up under the Private Characters option. There’s just nothing there I can’t remember if I installed the OTF or TTF. I will check to see if that is the issue.
I will also try downloading Nexus Font.

Update: all versions of Samantha are Open Type. All are installed. Character map still shows nothing for the private characters. It only shows the regular ones.
I downloaded Nexus Font. It won’t even acknowledge that Samantha is an installed font. Photoshop Elements can find it, no problem, but only shows the characters that the character map can see. Same with Silhouette. Both programs can see the regular characters, but the characters that I bought the font for are still missing. Nexus sees lots of fonts, but not Samantha.
I checked the help section for Microsoft/Windows 10, but although others have asked the same question on how to access the special characters, it was not helpful.
I will be contacting Laura Worthington, since it is her Samantha font that I am most upset about.

Hi scrapnnana, sorry you're having this issue! I did a little googling and came across a few articles. You may have come across these already, but I thought I'd link them in case they help. Laura Worthington Accessing Swashes (you've probably seen this one) InDesign Secrets article (talks about two programs that can help with glyphs, one for Mac and one for PC) Angie Makes Private Use Area for FontsLastly, I did want to say that I have Illustrator CC 2019, so if there's anything I can do to help you, let me know. Unfortunately I don't own Samantha but send me a PM if there's something I can do.

scrapnnana I went to my Win developer's site to see if there is a Win10 bug for fonts. There is but it is not the same problem. It is but it isn't, if that makes any sense. NexusFont can read all the characters for every font installed and not installed on your system. Can you open the Samantha font as a non-install with NexusFont. Put the font on a different drive and have Nexus Open it, don't install it. I keep hounding about NexusFont because it is a good troubleshooter for font problems. I use to run a font newsletter ages ago and debugged a lot of font issues for Windows over the years. I use it as part of my debugging toolbox. Does the Samantha font just say Samantha or did she use abbreviations, spacings, etc.... Windows 10 can not read certain old Windows naming's due to updated protocols to run our new apps, software programs, hardware, etc.... A lot of designers are still using old naming guidelines. If that happens then the fonts will read in some programs and not others. Laura would need to change this and send you a new font. You can change it too. I might be able to give you the new name change if you can copy the abbreviation. I would go through Laura first because you already paid for the font. I had to change a couple of my own fonts that I created to work on Windows 10. Try wendifful steps before trying mine.

Thank you, wendiful and amayalylac.
I have already tried some of the suggestions without success, but not all.
Laura Worthington replied very promptly. I just saw her email. She sent me an attachment with the font set, as well as some additional suggestions.
I am hoping that between her help and yours, I will finally get this resolved. Thank you.

I hope you get it resolved!
Something is definitely off for you. I have Samantha installed and the glyphs all work great with Silhouette Studio.
There was a Windows update that prevented newly installed fonts from showing up in Studio, but that is not your issue. And that has been resolved with newer Silhouette Studio updates.
I hope you get your font issue resolved!

I uninstalled the older Samantha font family that I owned, and installed the updated, consolidated version of Samantha that Laura Worthington sent me, which works perfectly in Silhouette!
I still have the same issue with not being able to see the Monroe font special characters, but I will see if your suggestions help with that one. Samantha was the font that I really wanted to get to work again most.
Something seems to have definitely changed with Windows/Microsoft, because I first noticed this problem 3 years ago, but we were in the middle selling our home and getting ready to move halfway across the country, so I didn’t have time to worry about it. I haven’t done as much crafting or scrapbooking since we moved, but I am trying to get back to both again, and I have missed being able to use Samantha.
I am really happy that I can create designs with it again!!!
Thanks so much to all of you. Hopefully at least one of your suggestions will help me to access the special characters for Monroe, too.
