Minimalism, Marie Kondō, destashing, decluttering, being more intentional: these have all been the subject of many threads and posts on the board in 2019. It appears that some of us are looking to reduce our stuff (and the influx of stuff) at the present. If you're one of those, welcome! This thread is the right place for you, especially if you like a bit of a challenge and want to make the most of the renewed energy felt around the new year. The Minimalists have a 30-day minimalism game that they've been playing and encouraging their audience to play along with for years. I thought it would be fun to host it for the month of January in here. If you want to read more from the originators of the game and download the freebie calendar to go with it, head here. The rules are extremely simple. On day 1, you get rid of 1 thing. On day 2, you get rid of 2 things. On day 3, 3 things and so on! Does the idea of getting rid of 30 things on day 30 scare you? Fear not, there are PLENTY of things you own so much of... Normally, you're supposed to have the things of out your home by midnight each day. Since this might be difficult for those donating scrappy stuff, I think it's better to have dedicated donate and recycle boxes. If your item is to be trashed, it definitely should be in the garbage bin by midnight, however! You can play along for ANYTHING. Scrappy goods, home stuff, clothes, pantry goods, etc. Whatever's in your home (including the often very stuffed garage ) is good to literally go! The way you decide what stays and what goes is up to you. Some people love the spark joy method, others prefer to a more pragmatic approach. There's no right or wrong way to do this. Ideas for scrapbook stuff: sticker sheets (yes, almost used up sheets count as well!), washi tape rolls, pens, dried out inkpads, pattern papers that just don't fit your style or life anymore, cardstock colours you're unlikely to ever use, left-over wood veneer and ephemera, broken tools, etc. Ideas for home stuff: old towels, unflattering or outdated clothing, expired food in the pantry, furniture, decorations, etc. You can pick anything from any category any day. There's no "sticker sheet day" but if you want to categorise items specifically on some days, go ahead. The goal is to declutter and get the stuff out of your home once and for all. To kick the new year off in style, players will get rid of one thing tomorrow. So, who's ready to play and see how long they can last?

I love this idea! I just bought Spark Joy by Marie Kondō. It’s been a wonderful read so far. I need to get out from all this stuff and use what I love. (Both in and out of the craft room) I’m game to join this!

January has always been my 'out with the old' month so I should be able to breeze through this challenge. I already have a pile of stuff in my craft room to go and a bunch of clothes littering the chair in my bedroom to box up.
ETA: So I did the math and it amounts to getting rid of 465 things in a month! I still want to play along but I think I'm going to do it with the goal of hitting that 465 number rather than # of items per day. There's at least 10 things sitting in the garage that can go in the trash tomorrow so I could knock 10 off that number.

I could probably play that game just by cleaning out my fridge, freezer, and pantry.
ETA, I might not do this all month, but I want to get to 12 days, just so I can sing my list:
By the sixth day of January, I tossed from my fridge:
6 slices of turkey 5 DRIED UP CLEMENTINES 4 mushy beets 3 expired yogurts 2 cups of soy sauce And 1 ancient head of broccoli

Sounds like a great idea! I'm going to play along, decluttering crafty supplies as I go. I made a little Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my destashing efforts. I have 6 small boxes of stuff ready to go to the animal shelter thrift store but I'm not counting these. Like lindas , I'm going to concentrate on the total number at month's end (although I added up to 496) instead of sticking with the number by day. Can't wait to get started and see a difference in my space. ETA: Day 1 - 1 4x6 paper pad from Hobby Lobby. Looks practically unused. Let someone else make pretty things with it. Day 2 - 2 dies. Never used. What was I thinking when I bought these? Day 3 - 3 embossing folders. New in package. They are definitely not my style so I'm pretty sure they were freebies. No idea why I have kept them this long.

(Both in and out of the craft room) I’m game to join this! Welcome, KonMari convert! This thread is your sign of serendipity to put those new teachings into action... Can't wait to hear about how your reading translates to actual work and how you'll put your own spin on Marie Kondō's book. So I did the math and it amounts to getting rid of 465 things in a month! There's at least 10 things sitting in the garage that can go in the trash tomorrow so I could knock 10 off that number. Whatever floats your boat! The goal is to get the stuff out of the house so you're absolutely free to take out as much as you want and not to feel restricted by the progressive approach. I can't wait to hear about your 465 (and maybe more) things! I could probably play that game just by cleaning out my fridge, freezer, and pantry 30-day Clean Kitchen Game Goodbye, old spice jars and dodgy tupperware containers (turned improvised scientific experiments) at the back of the fridge... You've got to play along now, I'm dying to know about what you'll find in your kitchen, tucked away in the back. I'm going to play along, decluttering crafty supplies as I go. I made a little Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my destashing efforts A spreadsheet? You fancy! Love your next level enthusiasm with the spreadsheet but I'll probably stick to tracking my decluttering by replying daily to this thread. I'm such a peasant! Welcome, welcome.

I would like to think I could get rid of one thing tomorrow, so I’ll at least start. I may not be able to do every day on time by midnight, so there may be some catching up, but I’ll give this a shot and see how it goes.

I’m tired of living on the edge. There’s just no room for anything anymore so everything gets placed on the edge of the table, the counter, the chair, etc. I want to reclaim my space in 2020!

Well, now that my planner for 2019 is done I can certainly get rid of that crappy kraft card stock ( it was from JoAnnes if anyone wants to avoid kraft that bleeds when stamped ) I don’t know if I have 465(466?) crafty things to get rid of but if I clean out my closet & stuff I should have. It’ll have to be month long though as daily I wont have time toward the end.
Do old letters count individually? Lol need a bonfire for those.

I love this idea! Does it count that I bought a minimalist planner today?
I will not post photos of the before, but I do need to participate. I've named part of my unfinished basement the place where dreams go to die. I'd like it to be the place where we store stuff we actually want.
A couple extra bags of garbage went out yesterday without being missed. The trash pile will go out the day of garbage pickup. I'm ready. The biggest thing I need to do is PRODUCE! Photos will be coming in, but scrap stuff will be going out!

lindas, I’m going to do your way too. Just count how many I have each day with the goal of 400-ish items. I tend to do bursts of decluttering because I work outside the house each day.

I would like to try to play along. I just did a HUGE clean up of my place and threw a ton of stuff away, but there's definitely more to get rid of. Maybe it'll help me keep stuff clean for longer than a week for a change.

Question - If I get rid of say 12x12 paper, does each sheet count individually, or is “scrapbook paper” 1 item, no matter how many sheets?

If I get rid of say 12x12 paper, does each sheet count individually, or is “scrapbook paper” 1 item, no matter how many sheets? You're your own best judge for this game. If you feel like you have about 50 sheets of paper that need to go, they totally should count as 1 item each. If you feel like you need to dig deeper and have a big pile of paper that needs dealing with, set a rule of what counts as 1 item so that it's most beneficial (but still doable) to you. If you have quite a bit of paper, you may want to do 5 or 10 sheets for 1 item. As long as it's an adapted rule that you feel comfortable with, it's good. I’m game!!! I’m going to do it backwards, start with 30 things. I figure I’ll have more in the beginning to get rid of! Atta girl, get the most out of that energised feeling at the beginning! I would like to try to play along. I just did a HUGE clean up of my place and threw a ton of stuff away, but there's definitely more to get rid of. Congrats on doing a major clean-up! You'll be in good company here to do so more tidying up. Does unsubscribing to store email lists count? If so, I've already done two in the first two minutes of the year! You wish... Mind you, it's time for me to tackle my January digital declutter as well. Oof, I'm not ready for that yet. I'm so in! I've been getting bothered by all the stuff I have for awhile now. Both in and out of my craft space. One of us, one of us, one of us! Sounds like it's the right time to get to it if you've been feeling annoyed by your stuff... ust count how many I have each day with the goal of 400-ish items. I tend to do bursts of decluttering because I work outside the house each day. It's definitely best to adapt this game to fit your personality and preferences. As long as it keeps you going and motivated through the month to take stuff out, it's all good! Welcome aboard. Great idea! I was literally just thinking that it was time to do a purge. I'm in. Yay! Wonderful time to get ready for baby and make the most of the nesting vibes. Congrats again, by the way. I just realized I'll be gone to AZ for Creativation for seven days during this. I think I'll either be playing catch up or spreading those days out before I leave so I can keep up. Don't worry. You can skip those days altogether if that takes the pressure off and suits you better. If you feel like you have the time on other days to catch up, that's great too. I love this idea! Does it count that I bought a minimalist planner today? It counts like one more thing inside your home, that's what it does! Welcome aboard, refugeepea . No worries, hop2 . Just adapt the game and timeframe to fit your schedule. Adios, terrible kraft cardstock. Hello clean surfaces and extra space.

I’m game!!! I’m going to do it backwards, start with 30 things. I figure I’ll have more in the beginning to get rid of! This is how I was thinking of approaching it too! Besides having more to get rid of, I know myself and will let life get in the way. If it's busy, it's much easier to remember to get rid of 5 things than 25!

She didn't say yet, so I'm posting here. If she starts another thread that's cool. I've been going through my scraproom for stuff I won't use. The local Girl Scouts are happy to receive whatever I give! I didn't bother to count items LOL would probably have enough to knock out the whole month! Lots of QVC sets and warehouse box items I didn't want. Anybody participate is swaps way back when? I am including some of those too.

Lots of QVC sets and warehouse box items I didn't want. Anybody participate is swaps way back when? I am including some of those too. That foil paper in your first photo looks neat. Lucky scouts! The one spot I didn't get to in my big clean up was my last bookshelf in my craft room. But that's the one that has all the sticker sheets, so I'm gonna save that for the end of the month when I need to purge 30 things at once. Today, friends, I threw out ONE bottle of soap from my bathroom cabinet. And then promptly replaced it with another one. In my defense, though, the new bottle is actually a refill for the foamy soap I like and use all the time. The bottle I threw out was a bottle from a different brand, which I didn't like the smell of. Why was it still there? Good question. Probably because I thought "I should keep this in case there's a soap apocalypse and I run out." But when I pulled it out, I could see that the coloring had separated from the rest of the soap, so even if I did like it, it was probably time for it to go anyway.
