Ok so day 5 I didn’t throw out anything ( well I emptied all my garbage cans & brought it out ) the kids left so I spent the day alternately cleaning, doing laundry & sitting on my behind. I’ll catch up when shredding next weekend.

Congrats on hitting pan on a color. It’s vary hard to do that for me. I’m getting there on a naked palette that I have. In my (actually, your) defense, I only ever hit pan on a few colours in Urban Decay palettes. Anastasia BH's eyeshadow formula is so buttery that you end up with quite a bit of kick-up. It definitely "helps" making your way through it... Today I’m going to focus on cleaning my cubical and making sure it’s lean should I ever want to just quit my job on a spur of the moment. 🤣 For those capital-F-capitalism-I-am-going-to-live-like-a-true-hippie days! I decided to do this too, and the focus is going to be my bathroom closet. It is a train wreck and whenever I sit down to organize it, and declutter it, I feel overwhelmed. So yesterday I threw out a jar of foot scrub that has been in there half used for over 3 years, but was expensive, so I felt it might be "still good". Good on you, @kendramage . We all hang on to stuff because we feel some sort of obligation due to the amount of money we invested in it only to burden our daily life with it (and keep us feeling guilty for spending so much/not using it up). I could also do this declutter thing easily at my work, by just getting rid of all the extra/unnecessary papers that I collect at my desk!! For your next life's career goal: archivist. Cut up 5 boxes and put in the recycling can, cleaned out the pantry and finished packing up a bunch of things I had to donate. My total for the day was 30 things out of the house not including the expired stuff from the pantry. Wow, I' so impressed with everything you've done! That is a lot of stuff... And I’m going to the park to the bbq pit to burn The box of ex’s letters on 1/31 because I have at least 31 of those ( I stopped counting at 31 ) so I’ve already scheduled that for that day. I like where you're going with this, hop2 . Very much my style. A phoenix reborn from its ex-lover's love letters' ashes. *lights a match* Cleaned my cubical today and got rid of Beer cozie Old Xmas card Award paperwork Old notebooks (3) HatShoes Shot glass Credit card old employee This was clearly the party cubicle. Just sayin'... Also, big project - I’m decluttering my morning page journals. They’re brain dumps/processing space, so in some ways they’ve already served their purpose, but I don’t have it in me just to toss them. So I’m digitizing them by dictating them into my Day One journal - CRINGE! But it’s also quite interesting, revisiting thoughts and events from 10 years ago! Quite the way to mark the decade. I’ve dictated one so far, and taken a photo of the first page to attach to the entry, and now I’m ready to shred it. You're a better (and far more patient) writer than I am, joblackford . I tend to burn my old journals... I don't think I've kept any except maybe one from my childhood years. For Day 2, I tossed two hair implements from the bathroom: an old brush I've had for a while (why didn't I throw it out when I bought three new ones?) and a curling iron that worked okay but always snagged and pulled my hair, like there was a microscopic nick in the coating or something. 'Tis the mystery of life: why do we hoard the stuff we've already replaced? Good on you for finally getting rid of those pesky, old hair torture devices... Oh goodness I’ve only lived there 15 months and there were things ( olives ) expired 12 months ago in that pantry. Including a banana bread my niece bought that expired in October So 12 things were thrown out from my pantry Woohoo for that number of things thrown out! I had to lvie at already having expired pantry food after just over a year of living in your place... You would definitely not find expired olives at casa Booty. With a Spaniard in the house, the olives never last long. For the 2nd day (yesterday) I threw out some food items in my fridge! Fridge purge to start the year, yay! Day 2 and Day 3 check in: I've gone ahead and have cleared out clutter in my guest bedroom and have started to remove items from my closet. I'm taking this one slow because I don't want to get overwhelmed and have started to corrall a pile of organization baskets/trays/bins. Piano piano, Jessica . Slow and easy works just as great... I'm with you on that train. I've gotten rid of: 1 tube of lotion I had cut open to use up every drop, but that I hadn't finished (tossed) 1 lanyard from an old job (donate pile) 5 pairs of socks (donate pile) 5 old jewelry boxes (tossed) 1 Christmas kazoo box gift set (donate pile) 1 blouse that is thankfully too big for me now (donate pile) Now that is A LOT! Very impressed with your progress. Keep going! And congrats on the too large blouse. Went through my record collection when I put my Christmas albums away and pulled out 11 records I no longer want. Added a lamp base to my donation pile, and dropped off all the donations while I was out doing the groceries. I felt that in my part. Records are not an easy thing to part with. Good for you! Double good for you on taking it all out to donate straight away. Out of sight, out of mind, out of the house forever! Today I've sorted out and got rid of old socks. There's something I never need to do. I feel like I keep losing socks, I swear! And while I was in there, I got a day ahead of myself and pitched FOUR french onion crocks. They were free ten years ago. They were nice, but they were ceramic and had a handle, so the handle had a little hole in it (I assume to keep it from exploding in the kiln or whatever when they were glazed). So every time I wash them, more water got in the handle. It got a little gross. Great job finally parting with them. They served you well for all those years but you've got better little crocks now. It really was time to say goodbye (and take back some storage space). the kid’s pink umbrella with the teddy bear handle (we don’t have kids) Only started the game today so I'm doing some catch-up, but so far have a pile of 32 cookbooks that I want to donate. Ok, you got me beat in the cookbook department! Kind of envious, kind of not (I *really* don't have the space for more). Goodness me, how a cookbook can make me travel and satisfy my basic lust for life... It really isn't easy to part with them, I feel you. So far today I managed to purge an 8inch stack of paper from my work files which have been covering my scrap room floor for way too long. Go you! 8 inches of paper? Whoa! You did amazing. Day 3/4 - cleaning out my Dad’s stuff. He passed away in September. I pulled out all his sheets and towels to donate to the local animal shelter. Belated condolences for the loss of your father. You did amazing purging his bed linen and making sure they'd find a new purpose at the shelter. *hugs* Sort of a cheat day. I shredded 29 papers from my office. I was going to count that only as 1 thing, but the day got away from me so I called that good enough and goal met. I wouldn't consider that a cheat day, joyfulnana . 29 papers is great progress. Don't beat yourself up for "only" doing that. It takes energy and focus to flip through the papers and decide for each whether they can go or must stay. Sounds to me like you did your work for that day just fine. Well, if shredding stuff counts I’ll be fine as THATs next weekends task Shredding stuff definitely counts! I've continued the Christmas decoration clean-out and met my goal for today! Woohoo! I'm so inspired to keep going, what a great challenge. So glad you're enjoying this challenge and managed to meet your goals! I’m finding it easier to just have a big box and shopping bag by the the front door. When I see something and I wondering why I’m keeping it, I drop it in the box or bag. It's a great system if you have the space for it and don't put off carrying the stuff away once it starts filling up a little too much. I agree that having a drop-off point in your home can really help keep you on track and do the work while you go about your everyday life! Today I put 4 sets of border dies in my scrapbooking garage sale box. Oooh, the dreaded scrap stash attack... Cleaned out half of the food pantry, embarrassed to find so many expired foods!!! Congrats on getting through half of your pantry, ss ! This kind of challenge is a great reminder to go easy on the buying and stockpiling: we just don't use a lot of the stuff that enters our home. I did a big whole house clean out about 5 years ago after reading Magical Art of Tidying Up. Amazing how much stuff has creeped back in everywhere again. This is also a good reminder to stop buying so much stuff. Online shopping and 2 day shipping makes it so easy for things to just magically show up at my doorstep. I agree with you, scrappyem . I've found that online shopping makes buying a little too easy sometimes. I now try to order exclusively by having stuff delivered at a pick-up point or the post office so that I have to make the physical effort of bringing it in. The big clean-ups are only temporary measures, alas. The changes in our everyday habits are the key to keeping things tidy but oh my, that's far more difficult to achieve, unfortunately... I confess to falling off the wagon already but in my defense I wasn't home Friday or yesterday and I'll be out a good part of today. Hey, no need to beat yourself up about it. As long as you feel good about the work you did do, it's all totally fine! Old play dough (millions of lbs) Consider yourself lucky if you found most of it in the pots, not in between furniture cracks, under plant pots or the dog/cat bed... Love reading these posts each day. It keeps me motivated to remember and go through additional boxes, storage crates, bookshelves, closets, and more. I agree, catseatcheese! So encouraging and filled with ideas on what to work on next. Thanks to everyone participating and sharing! I finally started this weekend!! some of them are pretty small things, but hey, any start is good, right?!? Yes, a start is a start, period. No need to aim for big stuff or a large number. Congrats on starting!

Sorry for the absence, ladies. I needed a few days off after having been present almost daily throughout most of November and December.
I think I stopped reporting in here at day 3?
Day 4: Goodbye to 1 mug I received last year and never used (donated), 2 instruction booklets for electronics we no longer have (recycle) and 1 scarf (returned to store for credit).
Day 5 + 6: Dropped off 11 books at the street library on my way to work this morning. It was heavy, not practical carrying with me in public transport during AM peak hours but totally worth it to reclaim part of my book shelves! The street library I used is full now. Methinks I'll have to wait a little before I bring in the next load of books...

- Donation bag: at least 4 Christmas ornaments (should have been more, but it's a start) that I decided I don't want any longer (unfortunately this isn't technically a 'win' because I added quite a few Christmas decorations to my collection this season)
- 5 cans of outdated stuff from the pantry-- the oldest (so far) had a "best by" date of 2014 on it. Does the oldest outdated food item win a prize of some sort?
Reducing is always a win - better than adding new ornaments and NOT getting rid of ones you're over! As for oldest outdated food, my in laws will win that every time. The SILs went through their parents' cabinets and found baking mixes from the 1980s... with weevils that died in the 20-oughts? yuck!! Expired 2014 is amateur hour ! I bet we all have something in our kitchen that's 5 years expired. That's just well-aged... lol.

Loving this thread!
I ended up with two garbage bags full of clothes and a bag of shoes to add to the 3 boxes of kitchen stuff I already had ready to go out. I didn't make it to the donation drop-off but that will give me more time to add too it before I can go this weekend. I also managed to throw out/recycle: 2 bottles of soap I hated, shampoo that made me itch, lotion that smelled yucky, expensive foundation that was beyond awful (and I'm still mad I didn't return it back when I bought it), a headpiece from halloween that was loosing feathers everywhere, and a broken headband. I am too lazy to actually count everything but I'm guessing I'm at least 1/2 way to the 465 items goal.

I am keeping up with my days-- super surprised I've made it to day 6-- but decided that I would not post evvvvvery day.
Yesterday, I got rid of FIVE things from my bathroom: a rug I'd replaced (why was it still there? Because I only replaced it like a week ago and when I replaced it the trash bin was full and I was too lazy to empty it and take the bag to the dumpster.), a small basket which I took to work to replace the one there that is broken, two eyeshadow palettes from a couple of Christmases ago, and a pack of makeup remover wipes I wasn't using.
Today I tossed out six makeup bags that don't spark as much joy as the others. (I subscribe to ipsy, so I have a lot of little bags. I like them, but don't need all of them.)

It's encouraging to read about all the things we're managing to move out of our homes and lives.
Today's contribution was to toss my old carry on travel bag that has a broken handle and a broken zipper. It was the perfect travel bag and I still adore it, it's come on all my trips since I got it in 2007, but I was deluding myself it could be fixed. Bin pickup is tonight so it'll be gone before my willpower fades.

I was out most of yesterday so had a day off but hopefully made up for it today! Guest room and hall cupboard cleaned and I have sorted out the following:
For the op shop - 2 white bowls - 2 plastic jugs - teddy bear - misc sewing supplies - 2 pictures - ipad cover - wall hanging - adult colouring book - necklace - 2 bangles - letter rack
Tossed - Various random scraps of fabric
Have also organised to go to a bedding remaking place with 2 old down duvets and several down pillows and will hopefully get all of those transformed into one new warmer duvet for this winter.
Tomorrow it's the turn of the guest bathroom.

I figure everyone around the country is doing this right now so I’m going thrift shopping in the next couple of weeks!! I need a couple of specific clothing items and I think the odds of finding them in mid-January are better than any other time of the year I didn’t declutter today, but I did suck up a lot of dust, cobwebs, and garland debris from various places I can’t easily see or reach so I’m going to give myself a gold star anyway.

For day 7, I attacked my tiny scrap stash and got rid of some things: 1 dead inkpad (RIP), 2 little bags of paper clips I was never going to use because the shape wasn't for me (donate), 1 pen that writes poorly, 2 rolls of washi tape that have dried up (ugh, this is why I try to stick to the MT brand), 1 almost empty pot of gesso. For day 8 (today), I picked some random stuff from the kitchen as I was waiting for dinner to cook. 1 wood spatula that has seen better days and needs replacing, 1 fancy bottle opener that was gifted to us but we never use because it's nowhere near as practical as it looks pretty (donate), 1 random teaspoon that isn't ours and we have no clue how it ended here - picture posted in group chats + mailed to family last year but no replies so methinks it's ok to let it go after over 6 months (donate), 2 Amora Dijon mustard glasses (recycle), 1 box of terrible quality matches that drive me crazy every time I try to use them to light a candle, 1 pack of paper napkins with a design that just isn't our style (donate), 1 chipped mug. Our apartment is only 40m² (430 sq.ft.) so I'm not sure I can find enough stuff to go on the entire month but I'm going to try! How's it going for everyone else? Anyone else doing the lazy approach of looking around for stuff to find when they are in a room for an entirely different purpose? I bet I can find a handful of things sitting on the toilet.

Ooooh, the job I hate to do! Dusting, bleh. You absolutely deserve (and earned) that gold star! Dusting is the WORST! especially with allergies. That's one of the reasons clutter bothers me - too many dust catchers. A good motivation to get rid of some more stuff! Maybe today I need to actually throw out some of the boxes and things I put in the "get this crap out of my space!" laundry basket. So far it's all been sitting there waiting for possible re-use.

My lists 1/7 Unicorn mask Smoke alarm case Cleaned printer paper and organized - threw out trash Cubical desk magnets Small hand lotion (used up. Not replacing because I have 10000) 1/8 Old coffee Old bananas Farro (used for dinner) Barley( used for dinner) Old fabric Cardboard box Old ephemera I’m glad I’m making progress. I’m trying to identify what I have and use it up if it’s still good but sitting around. That’s basically my entire scrapbook stash. I’m also just reorganizing spaces. Today I cleaned 1/3 of the freezer and wrote down everything in there. I will try to eat it down. I’m still working on the basement scrapbook storage. I’m adding a pic of the disaster it was today even after I picked some of it up. Lol. My goal is just small progress each day.

sleepingbooty, I do the lazy approach. I have been doing it for over a year. My house has actually shaped up well. Like when I brush my teeth I clean out my makeup drawer. Another day I do my makeup brushes. Another day my toiletries. Each day a tiny area. It’s almost like I don’t even need to put in huge effort to make progress. It also helps keep momentum. I’m just so used to doing whatever is in front of me while I wait for things.

They clean and reloft what filling they can, add more if needed and then put into new down proof cambric cases. I've had things remade in this place before - another duvet and some new pillows with the leftovers. Apparently down can last for many years - they say that one of their remaking jobs involved an 80 year old eiderdown!

How's it going for everyone else? Anyone else doing the lazy approach of looking around for stuff to find when they are in a room for an entirely different purpose? I bet I can find a handful of things sitting on the toilet. yup! that's how I'm doing it, too- not the toilet part, lol, but I'm constantly getting distracted from whatever I'm TRYING to do because I find things I want to get rid of. Now if I was *actively looking* for things to get rid of? I wouldn't see any of them- I just get used to seeing stuff lying around. Yesterday after work I'm sure I found enough things (if you count individually, which is TOTALLY what I'm doing, lol) to cover the 7-9th, at least. I started organizing the small built-in desk / catch-all right inside the kitchen door... my purse goes there every afternoon, and so does a lot of other crap!! Tossing:Lots of things: empty Rx bottles had started collecting on that desk, and lots of papers to file away in their proper place, shred, and toss. (I do hate that all the random papers I'm getting rid of are being thrown away; our town no longer does recycling.) Donating: -- misc. bag of Christmas stuff (bought from GW in the first place, for one specific thing in the bag) -- misc. bag of Christmas decorations I brought home from work because I thought I'd do something crafty with them (let's face it; I won't) -- two cheap kids' Christmas ornament kits I bought from Michael's probably 3 or 4 years ago and put in a kitchen drawer (I guess my thinking was they needed to be heated in the oven, so the kitchen was the best place to store them?). I finally decided I'm never going to make them. -- recipe box full of 4x6 cards- bought originally for a meal-planning project that I never did. -- wooden magazine rack from the living room (I bought it originally from an estate sale)... we don't really read magazines all that often anymore, so now it's just collecting pet hair. -- Also donating most of the magazines out of that magazine rack; I saved a couple 'special' issues I wanted to re-look at. And after looking through them again, I will donate them. Some of the magazines in that rack were from 2006!!! And they probably haven't been looked at SINCE then- eek!! WHY was I keeping them? I got into a groove last night; once I started, I didn't want to lose the momentum! I finally tackled a recipe organization project I've had sitting in the kitchen for at least 9 months... going through my collected recipes and getting them in some better semblance of order. When I started, I took all the loose recipes I had collected and taped onto pieces of paper, and un-taped them to better organize them. Then I stopped. So for the last 9 months, I've had to shuffle through a stack of loose papers to find a specific recipe I wanted. Recipes printed from the internet, written on a post-it note, scribbled on the back of an envelope, etc. It was a pain!! So finally, I'm tossing recipes I printed out but know I'll never make, recipes that are very close / duplicates of another one, rewriting ones I can't read clearly, etc. and making a 3-ring binder of my favorites, most used, old standbys, family recipes, etc. After that I might tackle the stack of cookbooks and decide whether I actually use them enough to justify keeping them. (I know I could organize my recipes online; I just like having them down on paper.) I don't think I'll be able to de-clutter EVERY day; it's just not how my mind works. But when I get started, I will keep going. Tackling the pantry is (maybe) going to be the big project for this weekend. Maybe. lol.

I'm guessing I've thrown away 5 items so far this month. Some of it was premade embellishments for cards I was sure I'd use and save time! Except I rarely make cards! They were really old too.
I uploaded, edited, and ordered photos yesterday. I'm trying to do less paper clutter when I plan scrapbook pages. I've been adding sketch ideas and text documents (notes about the layout) to the file folder with my son's photos. The important thing is I KNOW where it is and I can delete the ideas when the pages are done.

ETA: So I did the math and it amounts to getting rid of 465 things in a month! I still want to play along but I think I'm going to do it with the goal of hitting that 465 number rather than # of items per day. There's at least 10 things sitting in the garage that can go in the trash tomorrow so I could knock 10 off that number. Wanted to add, I'm taking this approach and technically I have hit that mark with all of the stuff I've deleted on my laptop.
ETA: After reading over the thread, I've been throwing away more than what I realized! My son is ROUGH on the things he likes to play with. Everyday, I'm randomly throwing one of his "toys" away. I'll have to pay attention.

Woohoo, go you! Our digital clutter is also a big problem so kudos for getting to it. It's a time-sucking task to get all those files and photos organised and edited. I'm constantly getting distracted from whatever I'm TRYING to do because I find things I want to get rid of. Now if I was *actively looking* for things to get rid of? I wouldn't see any of them- I just get used to seeing stuff lying around. It's the paradox of decluttering, crimsoncat05! Can't ever be easy and straightforward... I finally tackled a recipe organization project I've had sitting in the kitchen for at least 9 months... going through my collected recipes and getting them in some better semblance of order. *gets the pompoms out* YAY! That sounds like it was a massive task. I'm so happy for you. 9+ months but you did it! Must feel amazing, as well. It's those pesky things that just linger on and you feel you'll never get to in the end but oh, when you do, what a joy. hey clean and reloft what filling they can, add more if needed and then put into new down proof cambric cases. I've had things remade in this place before - another duvet and some new pillows with the leftovers. Apparently down can last for many years - they say that one of their remaking jobs involved an 80 year old eiderdown! That's amazing and so eco-friendly, anniefb. I have never heard of such places around here although we don't quite have the amount of down duvets as they do in other parts of Europe so that may play into it. I hope your "new" duvet brings you all the warmth and cosiness needed for next winter! Oh my, I'm slacking already! I need to do days 6, 7, 8 and 9 tonight when I get home. You can have a declutter party when you return home. A pot of tea, a platter of biscuits and a donate box.

Day 9 already! Time flies when you're decluttering. For the 9th day of Minimalmas, my inner Marie Kondo gave to the garbage bin and donate box: - half a tablet of meh chocolate that we were just never going to finish - the remnants of an old bag of peppercorns - a bottle of makeup remover that made my eyes itch - 3 paperbacks - a decorative wood panel that's been lying dormant under the bed for over a year #unforgotten - a travel bottle/liquid container that doesn't live up to its leak-proof promise - a broken umbrella that couldn't be fixed I also spotted a pile of DVDs and Blurays while looking for stuff to get rid of tonight. Looks like I know what needs figuring out tomorrow!

Today I delivered the 88 things I have collected from my craft room since January 1 plus the 6 other boxes of crafty supplies gathered prior to the first of the year. They all went to the humane society thrift store and the volunteer accepting them said they would sell fast. Out of my house, money for the animal shelter. Win/win!!!
I hope to be able to drop a large bag of clothes off at the Goodwill truck on Saturday. They are always here on the 2nd Saturday of the month. One of my goals this year is to donate something every month. I was about 60% successful last year and hoping to be more consistent this year.

I've just come in from the garage where I took the opportunity to have a quick scout around when I was putting the Christmas ornaments away again:
- 4 boxes put into the recycling - old broken wreath tossed - wine gift box added to op shop pile
Also sorted out some surplus food to donate to the food bank box in the supermarket:
- box of chocolates - bag of sweets - 2 tins of corn

Very late to the party but starting on day 10 is better than not starting at all, right?
I commit for today to toss ten items from my scraploft. I think I will start with my pens and see which of those are dried up.
Will update when I've done my task.
ETA: I did it straight away.
~~4 pens ~~set of mini stencils ~~journaling template ~~tissue paper ~~bendable ruler ~~corn on the cob holders ~~wine glass charms
There's my ten for today. Will start on my 11 for tomorrow later if I can.
