**GypsyGirl** - thank you. I'm done up there - the rest of the stuff in the house (and it is still super full) will go in an estate sale scheduled for the end of February. It should be empty after that (what doesn't sell will be donated or hauled away as trash) and we'll get a housekeeping service in the Monday after the sale and then get it on the market that week. Fingers crossed it sells quickly. It'll probably end up as either a summer house or a rental which makes me a little sad but it's walking distance from the beach in a tourist area and many of the neighbouring houses are already summer houses or rentals. Ugh on the flooding - what a pain!

I can't believe I'm going to write this, but I'm actually excited to get back home next week and start going through things again. I've been here and going through my mind is a list of stuff to do when I get home! I think I'm returning home on Monday or Tuesday. I am having a good time here though. The grandchildren are keeping me busy for sure. By the looks of it, you guys are doing great!! We should all be proud of our progress!!

Well I finally took the bull by the horns & started working on my scraproom. Last summer a shelf pulled out of the wall knocking over my tv, littering the floor with all my scrap books & magazines and knocking over another bookshelf full of paper & embellies, and basically creating a mess of epic proportions that I unsuccessfully ignored until Monday. I knew it was really bad when 3 visiting teenagers commented on just how bad it looks and how long it had looked so bad. 😖 I’ve spent the last 3 days clearing stuff out of the room, putting together a 4x4 kallax unit and starting to rearrange everything. I anticipate another 3 days of work spread out over the month of February as I wait for a few things I ordered from The Container Store during their Elfa sale. I’m trying to purge as I clean up, sort, store like items with like, and get everything put away. I’m updating my inventory as I go along. It’s very slow going and very painful. Purging is the hardest fo me. However, what I’ve done so far looks great & is much better organized! I’ll need to repair that 1925 plaster & lathe wall. I’m NOT looking forward to that.

Purging IS very hard, but you can do it!! Just do it a little at a time, and it will be well worth the effort!

linda Holy cow! I dread having to clean out my parents' house. My mom has every closet and cupboard filled to bursting. They also have a 4 car garage and a small barn. She thinks we will have an auction, so won't part with anything.

She thinks we will have an auction, so won't part with anything. THIS is the reason I am moving to a smaller space. I don't want my 4 kids and their spouses to have to clean out the family home. When my husband's parents died, we helped clean out the family home, and it was quite the job! All three of the sons were there with us spouses and several of the grandkids, and it took us 2 weeks all together, and then the oldest son and family had to return to finish up!! We were all from out of state, so 2 weeks was all the vacation we could take!! But man, it was a HUGE job. And we had a garage sale during that time to try and get rid of some stuff. I wouldn't wish that on my kids!! So, I'll have it done before I can't do it!!

We've donated and tossed so much - my sister, me, and my son all took stuff (including furniture) and it's still overflowing - I pity the estate sales guy who has to stage it. she always said that she didn't plan to get rid of anything - she would just sit on a cloud and watch us fight over it. No fighting but I bet she's not thrilled at how much we're not keeping.

She thinks we will have an auction, so won't part with anything. And the really sad thing is that in most cases, very little of it will have any value. We had to clear out my in-laws home first and it was quite the learning process. I wanted to do the "rip the bandaid off" method, but DH kept deferring to his sister. As a result things sat in the house for over 2 years, deteriorating. When she finally held the estate sale, she & DH each cleared about $2,000 after all the fees. The sale included all the tools and machinery in FIL's big shop/shed. The last few years of mom's life, I encouraged her to sell things that none of us would want. She was able to use the money and it was less for me to deal with later on. When she passed, I employed the "rip the bandaid off" method. Sisters and I took what we wanted (which was very little) then I gave all the cousins 2 weeks to get what they wanted. At the end of that time, I had the local thrift store come and haul the rest away. My aunt kept telling me to have an estate sale, but having been through that before I wasn't going there again! As the result of all that, I've told DD not to hold on to anything she doesn't love. She has requested that I make a list of the history of family pieces, as well as the stories behind other items we've picked up living overseas for so long. There are lots of stories in those pieces and she doesn't want to lose them. So doing that is on my list for this year.

I did get all my indoor christmas decor, tree and decorations down that was a huge task! 95% of it is put away but I need to buy a rubbermaid container for a few stragglers.
There is a few things outside on our front entrance that I need to deal with but we had a snowstorm last night so it will have to wait a day or 2.
I managed to get thru a few more bags of old bills and other papers.
Our 2nd oldest had to move in to our spare room in the basement which has really stressed me out. I was feeling pretty good about where the house was going in terms of clutter etc and now we are back to square 1 UGH.
I had to clear out the stuff that was in the spare room closet and try to find other spots for it. My husband thought it would be great to put all his dry goods in my pantry that I had organized I got pissed and said no. It was a bunch of processed crap that I won't ever eat or cook.
He had our GS this weekend and he just destroyed all the toys I had spent hrs washing and organizing I was so pissed LOL.
I'm hoping to get thru some more areas/projects in February and hoping I don't lose my mind LOL!

There are lots of stories in those pieces and she doesn't want to lose them. So doing that is on my list for this year. Yes DO do this. My mum had stuff from her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother as well as all the things she picked up during 20 years in Europe and on her travels in retirement. I knew some of the stuff (I'm the oldest and had been asking questions and nagging her to tell us the stories for years) but so much? we have no idea where it came from or if it was meaningful or something she picked up at a yard sale. We found a commerative mug from a visit of the King and Queen to America in 1939 - had no idea if my grandparents had bought it? If maybe they had had the opportunity to sneak a peak at them. Turns out a family friend gave it to mum for her birthday in 2000...she had captioned the back of the photo indicating that. So it's a cool piece but not as meaningful as it would have been if my grandparents had bought it themselves back in 1939. So stuff like that and like the neat Indian (India) looking artwork that we couldn't figure out where she had gotten and I remembered from my childhood - the estate sales guy immediately recognised they were English from a time period when that style was popular there (and buying in England made much more sense than buying in India - she never went to Asia).
