They have released a statement tonight saying that they are stepping back from their roles as senior Royals whilst continuing to support the Queen and they will work to become financially independent. I will try to find the full thing but I think I also heard that they will be spending a fair bit of time in Canada and America. I’m not sure how I feel about it 🙂 BBC
A personal message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex: "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. "It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. "We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages. "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. "We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. "Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support."

I say good for them, figuring out what they need to do.

I wonder what they mean by financially independent. Will they get jobs? Will Meghan go back to acting?

Why wouldn’t someone do that? Who wants to be under all that scrutiny and protocol? And then have people criticize you for being “on the dole?” Nah - they should live their lives and be happy. Good for them.

I wonder what they mean by financially independent. Will they get jobs? Will Meghan go back to acting? They are creating a charity and will probably be paid members of the charity supporting themselves, and not accepting money from the monarchy in a way of saying, you are not supporting us, so we don't have to follow your rules.

It makes me sad that it might mean some of the tabloids about the royal families not getting along might have some truth to it.
I wish them the best though, I admire them for not wanting to follow along with all the rules and wanting to take the bulls by the horns in their own life. I can't imagine how restricted it would feel living as a royal...probably like a billionaire on house arrest.

I think its fine, great even that they are doing this. But I kinda wonder if they didn’t see the writing on the wall. I’ve seen a number of articles talk about how Charles plans to reduce the size of the “working Royal” family when he takes the throne. I don’t think they’ll have a problem being financially independent. Megan had resources from before. I’m sure Harry has assets that are in his name or soon will be. I wonder if they’ll continue to live in the house they’ve been in.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Harry; wasn’t sure what I made of Meghan but, frankly, this makes me respect the pair of them.
And I think it’s a healthy contribution to the evolution of the Monarchy.

Well I know I'm sad. I doubt this would have happened if not for all the nastiness the media and people have shown to them.

I'm not sure it's the Royal family who they feel aren't supporting them. I think they're wise to do what makes them happy. I hope it works out and I hope we still get to see Archie sometimes

I’m sad that they will no longer be part of “the firm” but as William’s children grow they will take more senior duties and Harry’s role would continue to diminish. While he’s still a young man he can forge out his own role, doing what’s best for him and his own family. It does make sense and I’m sure moving away from the scrutiny will be good for them both. I’m still sad though, they were a great asset to the monarchy.

I’m still sad though, they were a great asset to the monarchy. Me too. Ever since Diana's death I think a lot of British people have felt protective of Harry in a way.

But I kinda wonder if they didn’t see the writing on the wall. I’ve seen a number of articles talk about how Charles plans to reduce the size of the “working Royal” family when he takes the throne. This seems to be a trend in the European monarchies. This past Oct, King Carl Gustaf of Sweden removed 5 of his grandchildren from the royal house. The only grandchildren left in were direct heirs to the throne. My understanding is that Prince Charles plans to do something like this as well.

Basing this upon no facts I know, I would assume this required permission from the Queen. The traditionalist in me is kind of sad, but I think it's probably the way to keep the monarchy alive and moving forward.

good for them! i think it will be very liberating for them not to be constantly bound by all of the Royal rules and duties. i think they can make more of a social impact if they have control over their agenda. i think this will also bring some sense of normalcy that they probably want for their family.

I think its a good thing - its pretty obvious they aren't happy (or thriving) within the Royal Family and the obligations that come with that.
edited to add: I didn't realize Meghan was considered a Senior Royal? I assumed since Harry had been bumped so far down, they would be minor players anyway. Probably doesn't matter. Does this mean they give up the HRH titles? Their home (or was that a gift from The Queen?) What about the Royal jewelry? Does that stay with the family? So many questions but I am anxious to see this play out and how the money side works out.

I think its brilliant. Especially as they have championed mental health, I think this is a good, healthy positive step for their family.

I applaud them for forging their own path. The fact is, Harry is 6th in line to the throne. When QEII ascended, how many people could tell you who was 6th in line?
