DSO had bought a ton of sausages to cook up for the kids at DS's party last Saturday night, but he didn't end up cooking them. I made curried sausages with mashed potato - real, fair dinkum Aussie comfort food. (There's a new phrase for you scrappintoee - make sure you use "fair dinkum" in a sentence when you meet your nephew's girlfriend! )

Tonight I am making wings. We decided that would be easy and then go to the meeting. There is a bit (a little bit) of spinach and a bit of broccoli, green beans and a whole romaine lettuce.
Today was get my hair done. It feels so much lighter and softer since she cut it. My poor hairdresser. She had a crisis while I was in the chair. Her new phew who she was very close to had been found deceased. It was terrible for her. I wanted to leave so she could go home and I had dye in my hair. I will take her a card tomorrow.

Sneaking in... I was lurking in this thread today and came across the soup recipe cadoodlebug shared. I made it tonight and it was a hit! I've been SO cold the last few days and I have been wanting soup and this just sounded so good. DH and Dd liked it and said to fix it again sometime. DS didn't care for it but that isn't unusual 🙄 Anyway, just wanted to say thank you! Back to your regularly scheduled programming 😄

teddyw I am so sorry that your dad is so sick. Sending prayers to you and your family. cadoodlebug Thank you for the recipe! While the chicken soup was cooking today I began having chills. And I was feeling like I was coming down with a cold. I took my temperature and it was 103.2. So if I’m not on tomorrow you’ll know why.

Hey, my dear, dear dinner peeps! THANK YOU to those who posted such sweet things to me yesterday !!! Yesterday evening, I went and had a BLAST running errands, even though my joints were absolutely KILLING me (thanks, weather! ) it was GREAT to get out and be busy! I am feeling SO MUCH better today, and my SEVERE anger at my Dad has been released through MANY, MANY tears that I didn't know I needed to shed. I DO need to clarify one VERY IMPORTANT thing, though !!! Since the word " abuse" was mentioned on yesterday's thread. My Dad's angry outburts to me are NEVER about me personally, and he has NEVER said anything mean ABOUT me, I promise! Trust me, I know that verbal ABUSE is---I got TONS of that from my alcoholic Mom. And scrapmaven....I'm sorry that you experience verbal abuse from your Dad! And, you are SO right about how you and I learned from our SWEET hubbies that NO ONE has to live like that !!! My heart breaks for people who suffered ANY kind of childhood abuse and then to on to suffer in their adulthood. Honestly, some of the HORRIBLE, ugly, MEAN things our Mom unleashed on us are absolutely SHOCKING to DH---because he grew up with normal parents! Anyhoo, Dad and I had a GREAT convo today (with lots of hugs and apologies!!!) and he agreed when I told him we need help from an OBJECTIVE counselor, and we are FINALLY going to start accessing ALL the wonderful resources out there with our local Agency on Aging. I am also VERY happy to report that DH is THRILLED that Dad and I aren't walking on eggshells---at least---for now! We are all aware enough to know this calmness never LASTS; hence, we ARE going to get some help! These anger-filled conversations my Dad and I have results in BOTH of us yelling, and it is HORRIBLE, but it is NEVER ugly, rude, or personal. Thank God, they are always VERY brief. I just don't want anyone imagining 2 people screaming at eachother for a long time---it's not like that at all. He yells a sentence or two: "I DON'T NEED AN EYE DOCTOR, I DO see well!!!" Then I yell "BUT, you keep missing all the SPILLS on the floors and counters!"..... After that brief exchange, I HIDE from him for 2 days while we both calm down. Then, he apologizes and calmly says "I called the eye doctor today, and I'm going next week." Then we're both calm for a week, laugh, chat, etc. UNTIL something else sets him off. Sooo...again.....THIS is why we're going to get some HELP --------------------------------------- ANYHOOO...... lucyg .... I just went and finished yesterday's thread and saw what you said about GROK and Trader Joe's. I LOVE learning new words, annnd about wonderful, famous, interesting/ fun literature that I may never read**---- . BUT, I do enjoy at least learning ABOUT them. (**Our Mom had a Master's degree in English Literature---one of her dreams for all of her children was the read "ALL the classic books." I hate to admit, none of us have, BUT we have read some. I have this sort-of list of the classics that I MIGHT read someday....but I dunno if I ever will. ) I see that your reference was to a sci-fi novel, which is a genre I definitely DON'T read, but as I said, it was still fun to learn a new word. Lately, I've been reading A LOT of TV show/ movie reviews from "New York Times" and "The New Yorker" magazine because I not only enjoy their writing style, but I also learn SO MANY new words! (P.S....My Dad has always read both of these, and one of the things my siblings and I inherited from him and our Mom is love of WORDS.) Grok /ˈɡrɒk/ is a neologism coined by American writer Robert A. Heinlein for his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land. While the Oxford English Dictionary summarizes the meaning of grok as "to understand intuitively or by empathy, to establish rapport with" and "to empathize or communicate sympathetically (with); also, to experience enjoyment",

Dd is home sick. Again. While we wait 30 days for insurance to see if she should restart IVIG. While she gets sick. Again. Ugh....I am SO sooo sorry your DD has to endure so much !!! (( hugs )) Do y'all wonder HOW people can work at insurance companies? I truly do NOT understand how anyone could endure giving SICK, vulnerable, even dying people the worst news ever...."sorry, you're not covered. Good luck!"

destined2bmom, if you're still running a high fever tmw then get thee to the doctor. If it's the flu they might be able to dose you w/something to ease it a bit. Please go into bed and let others take care of you. Wishing you quick healing from whatever this is. scrappintoee, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings when I discussed abuse. I heard about your dad's temper and it just resonated with me. My dh was astounded by the stories I would tell about my home life, growing up. Like your dh, mine comes from a very healthy, happy family. They're not affectionate, but that's a cultural thing and not a psychological issue. Nevertheless, dh's house was a calm house w/lots of respect for one another and iron clad boundaries. My stories of childhood are so unbelievable that many people have told me that I should write a book. I'm thinking about it. I think that counseling is a very wise choice for the two of you. Still, don't be afraid to find him senior housing. Sometimes the healthiest relationships are between 2 people who love eachother but don't live together. Lots of senior facilities allow little dogs. While he wouldn't have a bulldog, he'd have a furry friend. You deserve a house w/peace and happiness.

I made the 10yo very happy by giving him pork (the last of the carnitas!) fried rice and pork dumplings for dinner. The pork dumplings came from the mom and dad of his friend who sometimes comes to our house after school when his mom has to work. She gets them in Chinatown in San Francisco, and they were really, really fresh and good. The fried rice has lots of veggies. Yesterday his new thermal bowl arrived from Amazon. He has been wanting to take soup or pasta for lunch instead of a sandwich, so we are experimenting tomorrow with rechauffe fried rice. teddyw, I’m sorry your dad is ill. destined2bmom, I’m sorry YOU are ill. Please take care of yourself. That’s a high fever! scrappintoee, I’m glad you had fun looking up grok.

My sister called. She has my dad at the dr. He’s lost 50lbs and is coughing up blood. He’s fallen 4 of the last 5 days. 😟 teddyw ....I missed this earlier.....I'm so sorry!!! (( hugs )) Is he in the hospital? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ destined2bmom ...Whoa, 103.2 !??! Please let us know how you're doing when you can! (( hugs )) ------------------------------------ gmcwife1 ....I was SO glad to read your story of getting your friend to seek medical help !! A ruptured appendix is SO scary, and I hope she's not horribly sick now. The only reason I say that is because I had a friend whose DH had it rupture, too, and he was in the hospital for quite a while !!! What I can't imagine is the severe PAIN she must have been in? Or, maybe she has a VERY high pain tolerance!? Wow---just glad she's okay and not septic! **ETA...Sorry, I just re-read your post, and you said she was at the doctor's today. WOW----so she is obviously out of the hospital....that is GREAT news ! I didn't want to seem like an overdramatic weirdo, so I left out the part where my friend's DH took a LONG time to recover from his ruptured appendix. But I also realize, everyone is different (duh!) , and also---perhaps hers wasn't ruptured as long, and although friend's DH was only in his thirties, he may have had OTHER health issues that made it worse, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------- scrapmaven .... Nooo!!!! You did NOT hurt my feelings !!!! Please don't worry!!! I hadn't explained his RAGE and ANGER very well, so I just wanted to clarify that he never yelled at ME personally! It's okayyy! ((( hugs )))) (I think several people had thought he was "abusive", which---YELLING at me "I DO NOT NEED AN EYE DOCTOR!!" is actually kind of abusive, when I only say it out of CONCERN....I guess?) Ugh, all I know is, I HAVE to work on my PATIENCE with this stubborn PATIENT! I have to admit, the WAY I say things to him isn't always the calmest or nicest. Also----I do still agree that he MIGHT end up moving out anyway. It will NOT be due to one of our angry YELLING sessions, though. I totally realize that just because he isn't annoying or angering me TODAY doesn't really mean SQUAT! LOL---this is a terrible, unhealthy pattern we've gotten into. Fine for several days, laughing, having great conversations, giggling, etc. and THEN....OMG! What you said about people telling you that you should write a book about your childhood---whoa! And yes, maybe you should! One of the things my Mom said to me (after drinking scotch all day and night) is sooo horrific and embarrassing, my siblings and I STILL can't believe she said it. But anyhooo....I "only" suffered VERBAL abuse, and I am REALLY sorry you had what sounds like a MUCH worse childhood than mine(not that we're COMPARING---hee hee ). Therapeutic (( hugs )) to you! ---------------------------------------------------------------- AussieMeg .... hee hee, thanks for the NEW expression! I'll be sure to use it when I meet my nephew's lovely Australian girlfriend! the lovely Alana. They truly ARE fair dinkum photographers!!! (by the way---I have heard that a few times, and I always thought it was Irish). fair dinkum phrase of dinkum INFORMAL•AUSTRALIAN/NZ used to emphasize or seek confirmation of the genuineness or truth of something. "Eric and his assistant are fair dinkum magicians" used to emphasize that behaviour complies with accepted standards. "they were asking a lot for the car, but fair dinkum considering its list price"

OMG, it's 3:10 am and I would give ANYthing to have some of those dumplings right now! We have a place nearby that makes yummy ones---gee, too bad they're not open for BREAKFAST. Hey, I'm a natural night owl who also worked NIGHTS for years and loved it! Wanting Chinese food at 3 am isn't as weird as it seems to "normal" people like you gals!

scrappintoee you always make me smile, you are not an overdramatic weirdo I actually do worry that my friend will push through and overdo it. Her surgeon was very concerned with her recovery but I feel like she is following more of the general guidelines. You are also not the first person to mention her possible high pain tolerance! So I’ll just keep doing what I can to help her rest and recover! Thank you everyone for all your well wishes for her teddyw I’m sorry about your dad, sending extra hugs your way. hdoublej you have found the best group around! The dinner tribe is such an awesome group of caring, loving and thoughtful people! One post, ten posts, 100’s of posts, they treat everyone with love and support
