I had never heard of this until last night when it was mentioned in something we were watching. Most interesting. I love the work in the stone wall.

It’s mentioned in one of the “bulge” novella books in the Outlander series. Maybe A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows?
It’s just fascinating what is left after centuries. So many ancient structures were canabalized for their structure and stones. And in Europe, so much AP was destroyed in the bombings. We were walking through Stuttgart (Germany) last night. It’s mostly all been rebuilt after WWII, but here and there you will see a church or castle that is still standing or has been reconstructed.

The last two times we were in England we stayed near Hadrians wall. The history is fascinating. At Vindolanda - one of the big military forts - they do excavations every year. An astonishing number of artifacts have been found, including a writing sample from a woman.

They made a significant find a couple of years ago. It never ceases to amaze me the history of this country and what we learn about civilisation from it. Archaeologists are likening the discovery to winning the lottery. A Roman cavalry barracks has been unearthed near Hadrian’s Wall, complete with extraordinary military and personal possessions left behind by soldiers and their families almost 2,000 years ago. A treasure trove of thousands of artefacts dating from the early second century has been excavated over the past fortnight.

I am always amazed at Roman ruins in that part of the world.
