It is getting some news attention. It concerns me because I work with the incoming Chinese students and I am immuno-compromised. I had several obviously ill students in my office last week. :: sigh :: Are you allowed to wear a mask as they are doing in China?

I saw a report that the second US case is confirmed. Yes, Chicago. I think I I hear the woman did travel to Wuhan, as did the person in Washington.

update: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday confirmed a second U.S. case of coronavirus, in Chicago. The person is a woman in her 60s who recently returned from Wuhan, China, the center of the outbreak. Officials said there are 63 cases in 22 states that are under investigation for coronavirus and are being tested, but only two have tested positive at this point. Dr. Nancy Messonnier of the CDC said the virus is a "very serious public health threat," but added: "The immediate risk to the U.S. public is low at this time but the situation continues to evolve rapidly." The patient in Chicago is in isolation in a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said. She was not symptomatic while traveling and has not had extended close contact with others since getting sick, officials said, which they believe are good signs for preventing the disease from spreading. The second U.S. case comes as the virus spreads in China, where officials have now reported 26 deaths and more than 800 cases, according to media reports. thehill.com/policy/healthcare/479726-officials-confirm-second-us-case-of-coronavirus

From cbc.caAll performances of Cirque du Soleil's first and only permanent show in China have been cancelled until further notice, citing the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the country. "As a responsible actor, it's the thing to do," said Daniel Lamarre, the chief executive officer of Cirque du Soleil. "It's a preventative measure from the Chinese authorities and it's important to collaborate with them." * * * ** * ** * Does anyone remember a TV show from about a couple of years ago where the plot was about the City of Atlanta and they try to build a wall around the area in the city where there is an outbreak of something nasty? When I was watching the news and the barriers that the Chinese people were putting up, resembled that show. I remember the zombie movie where they did that.

This morning, there were reports of possible cases at 2 Universities - Texas A&M and Tennessee Tech My son is at A&M and what’s he’s hearing is that the potential people with exposure from the student there is going to be extremely high because they were at registration the day before they went to the dr. True or not, I don’t know. I’m just hoping the student turns out to be a false positive. Hugs

Summer Olympics in Tokyo begins in 6 months. good point! I hope this outbreak is well-contained before any decisions about that would have to be made.

I have a student who is currently being tested, to my understanding -- they visited the region of the outbreak. I have been following the news.

What cities in the US are on lockdown? I'm fairly certain if there were any, it would be all over the national news, wouldn't it? I haven't heard/seen anything to this effect, at all.
No kidding, talk about misinformation.

I am hoping that it turns out to not be as well. Super scary to think how fast that could go through a college campus. The A&M press release I saw this am said they think the exposure to others is low - I am really hoping they are right. While I am not overly worried about DS2 exposure, the potential is so high that it could spread quickly on a campus the size of A&M.

A good friend, who is an internist at a major Canadian university hospital, told me yesterday they have emptied a ward in preparation for a possible outbreak. Lessons learned from SARS. It’s scary. And the symptoms are flu-like, unfortunately.

True or not, I don’t know. I’m just hoping the student turns out to be a false positive. I hope he turns out to have something else, more benign as well. But I know how the registration process goes on most campuses; it will be a very high number of exposed people. Even our much smaller student population could expose a few hundred people in an hour. I really hope it's something else. I can't imagine how many are scared because of this right now. Registration can be crazy with so many students in a small area.

from what I read, it sounds like it was an entirely new project, conceived after the outbreak began... and yeah, it's phenomenal that a construction project of that size / scope can be done so quickly. (let's hope it's not done with substandard materials; just doing it at that speed might cause enough issues on its own.) I imagine they’re very efficient and thorough don’t you? Hmmmm, from the experience I have with workplace safety in China..... Efficient - yes. Thorough - not so much.

I just looked up the countries affected and it's in Thailand too. My sister is currently staying in Thailand for the next 3 months. I'm going to write her an email to make sure she's okay. She's staying on the small island of Koh Phangan so that's good-at least it's not Bangkok with it's huge population of people.
The article I pulled up on Google said it's in China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand but that was as of Tuesday. I'm sure it's spread further since then (like the 2 cases we have in the USA).

I’ll take your word for it as I just had that impression rather than any first hand knowledge 😊 Yeah, sadly they often don't take workers' safety very seriously. It's all about getting as much done in as quick a time as possible. The company I work for took over several manufacturing plants in China, so now they are forced to follow the same Occ Health and Safety policies that we do here and in the US, and report on LTIs. But it took a long time. Some workers there just flat out refused to wear correct safety gear and follow certain rules. They were so used to having to go go go, get it done as quick as possible.

As of one hour ago, CNN reports 1287 sick in China and 41 deaths there. I'm reading that too and also, they're now saying the symptoms are severe respiratory infection whereas up until now I've read that it's pretty mild for most people other than the old/very young and immune-compromised. One Chinese victim was a healthy doctor in his 30s. 3 cases in France now confirmed and 'several' in Australia while we're currently trying to trace around 2000 people who have recently arrived here from the affected area of China.

8 people in Quarantine in Michigan now. I have a bad feeling about this Virus. I do not think the Government is doing enough to keep it out of the U.S.

I do not think the Government is doing enough to keep it out of the U.S. Honestly , there is not a lot government can do. I just finished a Great Courses seminar on the Black Plague. Countries frantically did everything they could think of, but there was simply no stopping it. You can't stop every plane arriving, every ship arriving (including charter boats), every train coming. All you can do is try your best to contain it and find a treatment that works.

The problem with this virus, and contagious issues in general, by the time you know you're sick it's too late, it's already been spread.

O'Hare Atlanta JFK LA We are flying from DFW to O'Hare then to Jamacia at the end of the week and then on the way home we stop in Atlanta and for the first time ever, I am nervous about flying. I've traveled tons and never thought twice. I know the reality is we probably wont be exposed but I would be lying if I acted like I hadn't googled to see what I could do to prevent from getting it.

8 people in Quarantine in Michigan now. I have a bad feeling about this Virus. I do not think the Government is doing enough to keep it out of the U.S. The only way to keep it out would have been to completely cut off all incoming planes and ships. That would have devastated our economy just due to the amount of goods we depend on from China alone but it would take a world wide entry ban to protect us. People can spread the virus for up to a week before they know they are sick. So only insuring healthy people with no fever, cough or sneeze is getting off a ship or plane is not a protection.
