And have you ever changed? I have a dog who eats to live (as opposed to lives to eat). We have always fed him twice daily. We put some chicken on top of his kibble to get him interested and sometimes he just eats the chicken (more so in the morning) and leaves the kibble. At night we will add more kibble and chicken and he eventually eats it all. Lately he is not eating much in the morning. Just wondering if we should stop trying to feed him in the morning. I know I'm reflecting my own hunger feelings on him so just need to be reassured that dogs are happy eating once daily.

don't you just leave kibble out for him to graze on, as desired? Our dogs are not like that at all, but I know some are.

maybe he's holding out to see if you'll give him more chicken? What breed / size is he, and do you think he's eating a lot LESS than he used to, because of this? He could be having problems with his teeth, if he doesn't want to eat the kibble...

Both with our previous dog and our current one, there were several periods in their lives when they would stop eating their breakfast. We would still however continue to give it to them and just leave it there until they would eat it. Several times they would just eat once a day. But eventually, they would start eating both breakfast and dinner again for several months until the cycle would start again. Right now we are in a cycle where she eats her breakfast at 7am and then BEGS for dinner at 2pm. I give it to her and but won't feed her again until morning. Again, the cycle corrects its self within a couple of weeks and we go back to 7am and 4:30pm.
I would still give the kibble and leave it for your dog to graze on.

2-3x a day. It varies with his appetite. If he doesn’t eat all his kibble in the am, we wait until dinner to feed him another full meal. He gets kibble and roasted chicken. Plus he begs from my husband. He knows who will share and who won’t. He’s very food motivated but doesn’t live to eat. Occasionally he’ll nose his bowl so I know he’s hungry. As young and lean and active as he is, we definitely aren’t concerned he’s eating too much, possibly too little.

My dog spends approximately 2 minutes out of 24 hours eating, and the other 23 hours and 58 minutes looking for something else to eat.
She eats twice a day and exactly the amount the vet says she should have based on her size, so she's not starving. She's just very food motivated.
I can't imagine any food sitting out waiting for her to eat!
Is your dog older/less active and maybe just not needing to eat as much anymore?

Your dog sounds the opposite of mine. Do you think he might be eating less due to decreased activity or because he is growing older? I know many dogs who are only fed once a day or who are free-fed so that they can eat when they're in the mood.
Due to a previous dog who would throw up if his stomach was empty (but who would eat non-stop of I left food out), I had to divide his food into three meals a day. I also fed him raw carrots with his kibble to satiate him. Of course, since I overlap dogs, every dog since has eaten three small meals a day with carrots. I couldn't bear the look of betrayal in their eyes if I dared attempt a change in the routine.

He has never been much of an eater. He's currently 3 and a goldendoodle-he has always had low energy (which we have appreciated), but there has been no decrease, he enjoys his daily walks.. We have had a lab who would inhale is food in one minute flat so we are not used to this at all. I had to stop getting Bark Box because he will snub 75% of the treats. If we drop food on the floor, he doesn't even bother to get up and check it out, he just has never enjoyed food. The only treat he consistently likes is chicken jerkey. We have always fed him Instinct Raw Boos because it has the freeze dried chicken and supplement with a bit of cooked chicken. If you tried to give him a Milk Bone, he will literally walk away. [/quote] I couldn't bear the look of betrayal in their eyes if I dared attempt a change in the routine. That's what I'm afraid of. I don't think he'll miss the morning meal, but the routine.

We have 2 labs and feed them twice a day. They are like vacuums - suck it up so fast, I am not sure there is really any chewing. They are almost 7 and 2, so maybe that will change as they get older. Our last lab would graze throughout the day.

My terrier was like this! I've always wondered at the dogs that have food left down all day and just let it sit there. We feed our golden 2x/day and he enjoys both times very much. I often say if only we could get that excited about eating the same food 2x a day every.single.day. And if only it was that easy to feed ourselves!

Our dogs just eat at will I guess. We fill it about once every other day. They just nibble.

My 11 year old border collie gets fed once a day and has since he was 2. He has a little left in his bowl to nibble, but isn’t a big eater. Now, our first beagle lived to eat. Her food was carefully measured and fed twice a day because she was starving.

My boy was sort of like that a couple of years ago and then I switched him to a different food. Now he LOVES to eat. We walk first 1 -3 miles and then he gets his breakfast. He wouldn't eat before our walk and now he gobbles it up before settling down for a nice nap. (which he is currently taking). At dinner I will sometimes add a little something extra but his food has so much good stuff that it isn't necessary.
My neighbor has a goldendoodle who sounds a lot like yours. He won't take any treats at all!
By the way, I would LOVE to see a picture of your furbaby!

My boys eat two times a day.. They know when it’s time to eat. They start circling. There isn’t a drop left once the bowl is put down
If he eats the chicken but not the kibble I would start giving him chicken and rice for breakfast instead. But some of the other things you said would also make me take him to the vet for a check up with blood work.

My dog spends approximately 2 minutes out of 24 hours eating, and the other 23 hours and 58 minutes looking for something else to eat. My lab is the exact same.....though 2 minutes might be a bit generous. Even though we use the slow feeder for dinner (he has no patience for it at breakfast time, using it then would border on cruelty) I'd say he spends about 1.5 minutes a day eating Now our beagle, when she was around, we'd just fill up her bowl in the morning and it was empty by bedtime but she'd just graze throughout the day, she saw no need to gulp it all down in one sitting.

Twice a day. For her first meal, it varies on whether she eats it all at once or not. Some days, she gulps it all down and other days, she just eats some and then goes back and finishes it later. She generally eats all of her second meal at once.

We feed our dog once in morning and once at night. If she doesn’t eat the morning meal we leave it out for her. She will eat it usually by dinner time. No we do not add the second portion on top of breakfast. This could be too much food at one time and cause bloat to the stomach.

Mine gets his rehydrated raw food twice a day, morning and evening. Then throughout the day, he gets various little treats. For example, he loves cooked carrots so if I am having them with a meal, I always set aside a few for him. Well, I do that with pretty much any vegetable that I know he likes. These are given to him plain without any butter or seasoning on them. He also gets dehydrated chicken strips that I make myself in my dehydrator. It is so much cheaper than buying dried chicken and I know there is nothing added to it. Today is toenail trimming day. He HATES his toenails trimmed. He doesn’t bite or growl or anything, but he tries to pull his foot from your hand. I started giving him a little reward after clipping each nail. He now will wiggle a tiny bit, but sits well for the most part. Today’s treat is some of the dried chicken chips. Oddly, his absolute favorite snack is a couple of pieces of the dry kitty kibble. He goes crazy for it. I’ve started a routine of having him go through his tricks at night and rewarding him with a little piece of the kibble after each treat. I purchased a bell like this one: Deleted Attachment and have taught him to make it ding by tapping the center black paw to get a reward. If it doesn’t ding, he doesn’t get his treat so he’s very careful to center his paw over the bell. He frequently gives it a double tap just to be sure. I saw a video of a pup doing this and thought it was so cute. Now before bedtime, he knows we will run through his tricks, including the bell, and he gets so excited when I tell him it is time for bed and pull the bell out of the drawer. With his weight he is supposed to get 5 of the dehydrated cubes a day. I give him 4, 2 in the morning and 2 at night, and then give him various healthy treats during the day instead to make sure I don’t over feed him and make him chubby. (My black cat has learned to recognize the can for whipped cream. I sometimes have sugar-free Jello with a squirt of whipped cream on it for dessert at night. If she sees that can come out, she is all over me meowing and climbing up my leg for a little squirt as her snack. The other cats don’t care for it.) My critters have me well trained. Attachments:

I have an alarm set with Alexa to let her know when it’s time so she doesn’t drive me nuts. The only problem is that she thinks any time Alexa makes a noise it’s time to eat.

I still feed in 2x a day because sometimes he eats in the morning & sometimes the evening. We actually leave more food in his bowl & give him more treats because he was inexplicably loosing weight. Sometimes after he doesn’t eat his dinner he will go back & eat it at 9pm. I tried feeding him later at night but he wants his cookie on top of his food at 6. And will whine if he doesn’t get it. Then eat the cookie & 1 bite & leave the rest til 9pm. He could never live with another dog he would have no food. He does better with breakfast because he gets an egg on it & the yolk will get over the kibble so he wants to eat it. My dog can snuffle thru a bowl of food to selectively eat the treats & not the food. He will even spit food out if he doesn’t want it. He definitely eats to live, unlike any other dog I’ve ever had he can walk past a bowl if food & not touch it. We’ve been thru tons of brands & flavors of food and he does this with every single one of them. He is just this way. At this point he will be 13 in April & the vet says he is healthy so I’m not going to argue with him over the food. As long as it’s not going to go bad I say leave your dogs good out in case he wants it

A thousand times a day if you ask my children because I have to keep reminding them and they are so overworked.

We had a pug that lived to eat. She would go with anyone that had a food smell on them.
We have a pug puppy that I feed her in the morning and take it up after 15 minutes. I do put it down again but she wants to graze and no, she can't. My other pug will eat her food.
When we got our puppy, she was on a hard nibblet food. We slowly switched her to what my other pug eats. This helps with the grazing.
I make their dog food. It is rice with chicken and chicken broth, peas and carrots. I do not do this because I'm fancy, regular dog food gives my older pug killer gas. Ugg, it's horrible and will make you want to put on a gas mask. This solves the problem.

Two dogs, same breed, one will be 9 this year, the other 5, two different eating styles. My younger one never misses a meal. My older one will be a bit picky about his breakfast and refuse to eat it maybe once or twice a week. He always eats his dinner. I feed them separately and remove the food if, after 30 minutes, he's not going to eat it. Because, if not, you know who will be chowing down his second breakfast!

I have a mini shepherd/cattle dog mix and we feed him 2x day. Sometimes he eats his food in the morning, sometimes not, sometimes he grazes throughout the day. He also doesn’t eat when I’m not home, which I think is a survivalist thing in case I don’t come home 😕

Basically 2, but sometimes they will get a late evening snack. One dog will eat whenever there is food in the bowl, the other will only eat when she feels like it. A lot of times she just eats half her food, like right down the middle half. LOL

I often care for the 10yr old German Shepherd next door. She is fed twice a day. Typically, only kibble, but occasionally will get some kind of broth, juice, meat bits over her food. She doesn't always eat it in the morning...sometimes nibbling throughout the day. For dinner, I add to whatever was left. Typically, she'd finish at dinner. If it were to go on for more than a day or two, I'd worry. Just because it's out of the ordinary.
Has your dog been to the vet lately? That would be my suggestion to ensure that there are no underlying issues (such as dental) that could be addressed.

Our hound mix was live to eat. A bowl of food was gone in less than 60 seconds. As she got older she wouldn’t eat just dry kibble so we would mix in a 1/4 can of wet food just to make it moist.
I remember growing up my mom only fed the dog (a peekapoo) once a day at 4:00. As soon as that dog heard the end credits for Guiding Light she’d come running.
