Why does a reverend pray aloud before the Pledge Of Allegiance?
Do they ever have a leader from a non-Christian faith do the prayer?

librarylady Thank you for your answers & links! I'll admit that I hadn't known until this proceeding that a prayer is said before it starts.

Of course Christians are the only ones that think they pray. eyeroll. I'm being sarcastic. This is a great question! Thanks for the answers!

I did know that each session begins with a prayer--mainly because I have read stories when someone out of mainstream religions are asked to say the prayer.
I have never thought about the why since so many public meetings begin with a prayer.
I admit I silently question "why?" at sporting events. Are we asking God to help us beat the heck out of our opponent?...not to mention I think prayer should be invoked for more serious events.

EXACTLY!! because ya know..the other team is also saying a prayer? So God likes one team better then the other? The whole Santa God theory irritates me.

I don’t hear a lot of public prayers at sporting events, but when I do, it’s more along the lines of keep the players safe and encourage fair play and good sportsmanship. I hate hearing the players thanking God for a victory like they are the “chosen ones.”
