...and both times I have gotten an utterly baffled and befuddled look from him because he thinks I'm talking about the metal fasteners and can't figure out why I would stock up on those. :-D
Am I using an old lady term or is my husband an overly literal engineer? Or both?
This time I teased him and said my oncologist told me "A staple a day keeps cancer away," thus the stock up! :-D
ETA: He says he would use the word "staples" too, but he was trying to track down staples at work recently AND he was stapling bumper covers on the robot for his robotics team, so he had staples (the metallic kind) on the brain. Too funny!

We use the term--but we qualify for old.

I don’t tend to use that word...I guess I’d say essentials or basics. Please ask him 🙂

Yes that's what I say, but I just found out I'm in the elderly category.

My husband drives right past a Costco on his way home from work. A couple of times a week he'll call to ask if I need anything special. Usually I'll say "nope, just the staples". Being an empty nesting couple, we know what the "staples" are for us. Oh, and yeah, we're old

I use that term and I am stocking up too. But you reminded me that I do need to order some actual staples for our electric stapler.

I wouldn’t use that term and I’m steadily moving into the “old” category. I usually just text DH and tell him which store/s I’m heading to, and if there’s anything he needs or wants me to get he needs to add it to our shared list. We have a list app that either one of us can add stuff to or take stuff off of. He adds it, my phone dings, I buy it.

My 18 yo DD used that word last week. She said “meatloaf is a staple food mom” ... it’s her favorite 😂

I just tested my dh and said, “what would you think if I said I was going to the store to stock up on staples?” He said, “ok, but I would think you are a little too worried about the Coronavirus.” Haha. Before anyone freaks out, we don’t think it’s “hype” (we live in Seattle area), it’s just that I’ve already bought quite a bit!

I vote for the overly literal engineer. In our home the word ‘staples’ is referring to these 3 things, by order of use from highest to lowest.
1) center, about a basketball game 2) basics 3) physical staples for the stapler

I use that word, but in a slightly ironic way like when I say I’m doing chores, or watching my shows, or washing my drawers.

My friend called hers the Brexit cupboard, now the virus cupboard and it will probably go back to Brexit cupboard by the end of the year while waiting for a deal or no deal outcome.

This Brit knows exactly what you mean, but I don't think I use the term much myself.

I use that word, but apparently my kids don't. LOL, I just asked both of them what they think and both asked me why I'd need to stock up on office supplies when all my work is on the computer.
