Congrats on your new kindle!!! I think you will love it! Even if your library buildings are closed check out your library system website. Our libraries are closed but they have updated their website with information on how to borrow books digitally. Also as someone already mentioned Audible is having an extended free trial right now if you want to listen to audio books. Thanks! I told my kids that is their job for later, after "school"! My whole family can use it, I'm so excited!

Congrats on your new Paperwhite! It is my favourite electronic reading device. Many happy hours of reading and travelling together to you both!

When we travel, I download books from the library to my Paperwhite and my Samsung 8" tablet so DH and I have a supply to read. Works great on both but I prefer my Kindle. Have fun learning a new technology!

Thanks everyone! After freecharlie mentioned the regular kindle being cheaper, I looked it up at Target. But what came up was the paperwhite, and they had just dropped the price of the Kindle Paperwhite to $84.99 (from $129.99), Thanks freecharlie! So I called Target, they matched the online price, so I picked it up! I will have to have my kids help me set it up, but I'm so happy to have it for when I finish my books. Yay! I predict you'll love it! And it really is easy to borrow books from the library... once you've downloaded it (in Kindle format), you just click "borrow (or whatever it prompts you)" and it takes you right to Amazon where you click "get library book". The next time you open your Kindle you'll see it downloading. And when the books are due they just automatically return themselves, so no late fees. Also...here's a handy little tip... If you don't finish a book by the time it's due just put the Kindle into airplane mode. That turns off the wifi and the book can't return itself. However, as soon as it's due it will disappear from your library account, so it's free for someone else to borrow. But it stays on your Kindle until you turn the wifi back on.

I still have an early generation Kindle that works great. I doubt you’ll have issues with the quality of the machine. You might prefer to read on a Paperwhite, even though you can read on your phone or any other device where you can download the app, if only to reduce eye strain or improve your reading experience so it’s as book-like as possible. If your public library has a good selection of digital books, then you should have no problem borrowing them — that part really comes down to your library, not your device. Otherwise, you’ve already gotten some good advice on this thread! I just want to make sure I am understanding correctly. So the paperwhite helps with eye strain and improves reading experience so it's book like? That would be great! Congrats on your new ereader! When I'm getting/getting over a migraine I can't be on my phone but I can read in my Kobo (I don't habe a Kindle). On my phone I can feel my brain zinging but the eink front light of the ereader doesn't bother me.

looks like you scored a paperwhite at a great price. I love mine, and use it to check out books from the library all the time. I love that because the screen is E-ink it doesn't reflect the light the way a glass screen does. Therefore, I can read sitting in broad daylight by the pool as easily as sitting in bed at night winding down. Your local library should have some form of online service. You will have to download through Amazon to get it on the paperwhite. Others can also send you gifts that you can download, for example our primary amazon account is tied to DH's name, so all our shipping credits go to that account. As the frequent shopper in this house I tend to get posessive of said shipping credits and like to spend them on books i want to read, but aren't available at the library. I can buy the book (using the credits) as a gift and send it to the email that's tied to my paperwhite account.
You might also checkout Kindle Unlimited. Nice access to quite a few titles, though you do need to wade through some of the junk to get to the stuff that's worth your time to read.

Like what if I check out a book, but after starting it decide I don't want to read it. Can I return it so I can check out another book?

Well.. you could check them out of the library in the sense that they will appear on your account and you'll have the option to "get library book" from Amazon... but that's as far as it will go until you turn the wifi back on. So if you have a book to finish past its due date it's always best not to go searching for anything else...you're bound to find something and then you'll have a problem. lolol Yes, if you've bought books and they're already on your Kindle then you can read them even if you have the wifi off. But of course you can't put any new ones on. You could buy them -- like if you see something on sale -- but they'll just remain on your Amazon account until you put that wifi back on. And yes, you can return any book at any time, as long as the wifi is on. But you don't have to return it just to take out another one. There's no limit. Well I mean, perhaps your library has a limit...? I actually don't know if mine does but I guess I've never gone over it. I usually have five or six library books on my Kindle at any one time because I belong to a book group on Facebook and see so many good books mentioned. lol. This is why I occasionally have to turn off the wifi, so I can catch up. lolol

I really shouldn't even have a phone, I only use it to text, call and take pictures (and look at facebook).
So, I could check out maybe 5 books that aren't bestsellers, like at the library, and "renew" them as long as there are no holds on them? I guess once I get started things will make sense. But my kids are still in "school" so they can't help until tonight. My husband has enough stress right now, that I can't add to that! I really appreciate all of your help and tips!

Yep, check out 5 at once if they're available. You can also put your name on the hold list for ebooks. The only problem with that, at least at my library, is that there's no way to "freeze" an ebook hold. With physical books we can freeze the hold so that our name continues to move up the list but if it gets to #1 then we don't get notified of the book...it will go to the next person, and the next one, etc. until we thaw it. But for ebooks there's no freeze, so when they're available they're available immediately. This is another reason why I get in so much trouble sometimes with too many books at one time. Really I need to unfollow that darn Facebook group with all their good suggestions! hahaha

It says 6 inch screen (measured diagonally). Is that the size yours is? My 17 yr old is trying to figure it out to get me started! So excited!
Do you have a cover for yours? Our Target doesn't sell them, but I may get one at some point. I need one of those pop sockets for it!
