I can totally understand that. . I am not a panicked type of person but completely broke down after doing a once a month run to a store last week. It was a huge store and I thought I would have space to keep some distance, but people were literally getting INCHES from my face to reach around and get things instead of waiting their turn. I just couldn't. I was shaking and in tears by the time I was back in my car. The same thing happened to me the first time I tried to go shopping when all of this began. I only had a few things in my cart and had to leave without getting more - it was all I could do not to cry in the checkout line. All.the.people.
I want to know if they have upped the pay for the people working in grocery stores. I wouldn't do it for minimum wage. I wouldn't do it for MY wage. I have a lot of respect for those people who continue to go into their jobs day after day.

I haven't heard of any pay increases for grocery workers in my area, but we only have a Wal-Mart and two small "discount" stores - Shop & Save and one other store that isn't really a chain, but may have 1 or 2 other locations. However, a large convenience store chain - Sheetz - has claimed they're paying their workers an additional $3/hour. They already pay better than some of the other employers in the area (including many County employees) and are known to pay a differential for late shift workers.

Since people cannot behave, it is time to close ALL stores. Everything done by pickup or delivery. Stories like these just enrage and disgust me.

Oh poor girl. It must be so stressful for them when they get so many ignorant people about. Some really do need a reality check.

My son works for a grocery store and will get a "bonus" not a raise. Most stores are upping the pay. He says it comes out about the same as far as money. He doesnt know his hours and is pretty much on call for when he needs to come in. No assaults yet, though.

Yes it is not easy.Β My 27 yo dd works at a Safeway 70 miles away.Β She is very overwhelmed right now.Β She lives in a house with 7 other people, 6 of which are unemployed and don't leave the house.Β They let her do all the shopping since she "works there anyway."Β Β She also has to go back and forth to drop off her 4 yo son with her ex, who is being a complete dick right now.Β I am glad she lives with her boyfriend who is very protective.Β Β At first the stories she told us were funny but now they have gotten sad and disturbing.Β She got spit on by a lady when they didn't have what she wanted.Β The lady got ejected from the store but she waited outside to yell at her some more when she went to round up carts.Β SHe has also sent us pictures of the disgusting state people leave the carts and parking lot full of gloves, wipes and other garbage. And I can't give her a hug, or see her, or our grandson until who knows when. She should have been arrested for assault, that is unacceptable. Spitting on someone is considered assault. I'm so mad for your daughter.

That is terrible- poor girl. Ok- I'm going to start on the hoarders again. If people would just stop buying everything they can get their hands on, the stores could be stocked at night and not block the aisles during the day. I do understand some stocking is done during the day. I still see items being wiped out, even though there are limits.

I can imagine how much stress she and other essential workers are under. Here most of the restocking is done at night when stores are closed, which I think is sensible.

awww, man! I would have felt bad for her, too. I hope her employer is sympathetic to her, too. And I hope they have some sort of mental health support available for their anxiety issues! Ha. you are joking, right? Support? Sympathy? For all that it is cool right now to thank the clerks and call them heroes, they are still paid the same bad wages, still expected to accept being treated like crap, and still expected to work on call for as long and as often as "business needs" demand it. Most still are not given masks and gloves and are expected to accept people all over them for hours per day. Hell, my neighbor works at a large grocery chain and a co-worker has symptoms but cannot get a test because the doctor says she is not sick enough yet. So even though she is symptomatic, she was told to show up to work or get written up. That is what it is really like at a grocery store now.

The same thing is happening to healthcare workers.

People are assholes. My dd works for Target in Atlanta. She told me today, if she had a dollar for every person who has cussed her out since this all started she wouldn't need to work. These people are just mean too. Her store is doing their best, but for some it's not good enough.

Everybody who has friends or family in this situation, give them out thanks. They really should be treated better by both the business and customers.

Iβve told people to back off at least 3 times since this mess has started. Donβt be creeping into my 6β space or Iβll tell you about it. Iβve been trying to be friendly but the other night I had a couple crowd me. I asked if theyβd heard about the 6β distancing. The woman said she had so I suggested she start doing it and walked away. I was not in the mood.

Fred Meyer (Kroger) has added $2/hour to every front line employees paycheck and limiting how many customers are allowed in the store to 1 guest per 120 square feet of store size. (Thy have a lot of different sized stores) Theyβre doing their best to take care of them.

I have a lot of respect for those people who continue to go into their jobs day after day. I did get an email from Kroger / Frys that said they HAVE increased their hourly pay for a period of time. I don't remember the specifics, but I was happy to see the email. And no, I wasn't joking about hoping they have access to mental health benefits... if someone is a permanent employee, their health insurance might include mental health coverage as part of it, depending on the provider and the plan. Or, in the case of this pandemic, it would be wonderful if the companies cared enough about their employees to at least get them temporary access to a counselor via phone, or something like that.

My store, that i work at finally starting limiting the number of people in the store. The customers have no concern for the workers and just cluster around you.

ds works in grocery and they're allowing those who are stressed to take time off. One of ds' employees took a week and a half off, she was so stressed when she left. She came back a few days ago and is in a much better frame of mind.
It's such a stressful time and on top of this they're working more hours, sometimes with less people. On top of that they're putting up with bad behavior from customers. ds store now has a police officer in the store daily doing security. Something that hasn't ever happened before, but there were daily incidents with customers acting badly toward other customers or employees.

Oh gosh. My heart breaks for her. I popped into Joann to get some bias binding for masks. I felt SO bad for the material cutting section especially. They looked so exhausted. And the phone did. not. stop. ringing the whole time I was there, with mask questions.
