We are selling our house. I mentioned to DH that we need to put in the paperwork that we will be taking the drapes in the Master bedroom and my DD's bedroom as the drapes match the bedding. The rest of the drapes in the house stay. As I took mine down and replaced them with neutral colors.
DH thinks it's crazy to keep the drapes and that's we won't be selling the house move in ready if we take them. I say the new owners are going to get rid of the drapes anyway and put up ones that match their bedding.
So the argument followed by a disscusion about if the new owners would keep any of the drapes and again I said they would get rid of ours and put up window treatments that match their decor. DH Thinks that most people when they buy a house keep the drapes that are there.
I would say if I moved in a house there is only 5% chance I would like their window treatments. And I am okay with that I like my style.

I didn't keep any of the former owner's window treatments when I bought my house.
I will take mine with me when I leave.

Are there other window coverings like blinds? Because curtains can be functional or more decorative. If they're purely decorative, I would take them.

I guess it depends on the drapes. I think it is rare that there will be drapes that are the right colors, design, etc. that I would keep them. I guess I could see keeping them until I could find something I liked and replaced them.
If you want to keep the drapes, I would suggest taking them down before you start showing the house. Then you don't have to explain anything in the contract. You can just say that window treatments stay with the home. If the window doesn't have anything else over it, buy a mini blind to cover the window while you are still living there.

I agree with you, I think most people (myself included) have very particular tastes in window treatments and the new owners will most likely want to put their own up.
The only time I would potentially want to keep the existing window treatments in a house I was buying would be if the windows were highly customized/unique sizes or configurations. And even then I'd probably only keep them for as long as it took me to find/make/afford new treatments.

All of the window treatments are still up for me. Her colors (paint and drapes) are very in line with my tastes. I only plan to replace on set eventually but it may be another few years. One thing I learned about moving... you may take your drapes because they match your bedding. The likelyhood they will fit your new windows is much slimmer chance. In all the houses we lived it there was only a couple of times I could reuse my curtains.

We're military and have lived in 13 different houses in 25 years. Some come with drapes, some don't. I'll use the drapes if they match, but switch them out if they don't. I'd say it's probably 50/50, but a lot of people have neutral drapes.
Now the blinds...what idiot in the 90s decided that blinds need to be colored? Mauve, Williamsburg blue, teal. Good Glory, the colors are horrible now. Luckily, most of the blinds are white on the opposite side, so I just flip them or put them in a box in the basement.

I am pretty sure you are perfectly correct. Blinds people will keep. Not drapes in most cases. That is like keeping a bedspread (design wise). People have their own color and design choices. My house had horrible window coverings when we moved in, and we took them down and didn't have new ones to put up.

We only keep drapes until we can put up our own. That said, I do not expect drapes to come with the house.

Every house we've bought has had blinds in place, but no drapes.
The buyer of one house asked for drapes I'd made to be included and we agreed because they were custom to the windows and I didn't expect to be able to use them in another house.

We bought a house this summer the drapes came with the house as they were attached as my realtor explained. We requested they leave the bedspreads to match in the spare bedroom. They ended up leaving all bedspreads and drapes. We threw away 2/5 bedrooms and kept the rest. If you want them take them down or specify. Here in our area they go with the house unless noted. As others have said chances are though they won't fit your new windows.

Put in the paperwork that you will take the drapes.
This is a true story. When dh and I moved out of our townhome 17 years ago, dd was nearly a 1 1/2 years old. We requested to take all window treatments. Well, the offer that we got (and eventually accepted) fought us because she wanted the valance in our dd's room. They were brightly colored (mostly blue) with a tropical fish theme. Super cute, but I couldn't imagine why an senior citizen single woman would want them. Unbelievably, she wouldn't bend on it and dh and I were about to tell our realtor to tell her to forget the whole deal, as we weren't in a big hurry to sell anyway. She eventually gave in and we got to take the valance.
I don't know why we didn't just remove the valances from all of the bedrooms prior to listing, anyway. Lesson learned.

Drapes are considered attached and stay with house. I replaced my horridly expensive absolutely perfect drapes with cheap ready made from penny's.

Only if they specifically ask for them, then I would put them in the paper work? I would think that would be a personal item of personal preference? Not like a major appliance or something like that. The blinds and stuff I can see but drapes seems specific. We bought a foreclosure so it was a little different in that we got the house as is. The only thing we did ask for was the stairs to the attic. For some strange reason they took those so we have no way to get in the attic with out our own ladder. it's in the garage. It just seemed wierd but they said it was a personal item!

Our old house came with some very large, very hideous orange drapes in the livingroom. They were pulled down right away and I sewed new window treatments. I only wish the orange and brown contact paper they stuck on the kitchen walls would have been as easy to get rid of!
Now in our new house that we bought 2.5 years ago, we asked if they would leave the draperies and curtains and they did. Not only are they custom for the big picture windows, but they perfectly coordinate with the walls and carpeting and we'll leave them up until we decide to redecorate or paint at some point way down the road. I could take or leave the ones in our bedroom, but they're not horrible so they're still up, as are the curtains in our guest room. We painted DD's room before we moved in and I still haven't gotten around to getting or making some curtains to match her bedding yet, but she has some neutral colored honeycomb blinds in there so there's no rush to get curtains put up.
We left all of the curtains and window coverings at our old house for my brother who is living there now. None of the curtains from my old house would have worked in this house anyway since the rooms all have different numbers of windows in different sizes. I would say if you are really attached to your curtains, I would take them down and replace them with something inexpensive before you start showing the house.

Our first house we kept the drapes. It was clearly spelled out in the contract that they would stay. We were young and didn't have a lot of money and the drapes were "OK"... We left them when we sold the place. They were really nice.
our second and third houses did not come with drapes. Some mini blinds were up and stayed but no drapes. I wouldn't expect them to come with drapes.

Most places we've moved into, the drapes stayed. However, I wouldn't expect the previous owners to leave something like curtains from a kids room, or something that specifically matched the bedding, since I won't have the same bedding. Some drapes that were left for us I still use (if it matches the paint/carpet in the room), and some I don't. I do try to keep what I don't use, so when we move I can just put that up for the new owners to use.
I would put in the contract which window treatments stay with the house and which go with you, so there aren't any problems with the new buyers. You could always get some cheaper curtains to replace the ones you want to keep- just put away yours and hang the new ones that will stay, so when the house is shown, the potential buyers know what they'll be getting.

Drapes need to go and blinds stay. Drapes can fit a variety of window sizes and blinds are custom fit which will probably not fit other windows. I would leave the drapes if they were getting to the replacement stage tho.

When we bought the house in 1996, they left all window treatments. I planned on replacing them right away, but it took about 10 years. If they were gone, I would like to believe I would have taken care of it sooner. It would have been no big deal if they took those with them.

I've never heard of leaving window treatments unless the buyers specifically request it.

I would put in the listing what you plan to take with you and negotiate if there is interest by the prospective buyer for what's there.

Yes the windows have blinds. And I am utterly tickled that I won this argument. He has been questioning my decorating sense all day. My compromise to make him happy is a trip to target tomorrow for two new sets of drapes to leave behind. Jen

Oh and the drapes In question are two lined white and hot pink chevron curtain panels. And in my room there are two lined velvetie khaki curtain panels noting special or irreplaceable but just match my bedding.

The house we bought had custom made curtains and padded pelmets. Very expensive and only bought recently before the sale. We still have some up but the style of colour of most of them did not suit us. They are wrapped in plastic in our shed, we keep meaning to give them to Goodwill as they were made for narrow windows and probably would be difficult to sell.
I think buying cheaper curtains and putting them up before leaving is a great idea. Not too ugly and cheap in case they can't replace them straight away and definitely in a neutral colour.

I would only leave the window treatments if the windows were a special shape (arc, circles, odd size) or if they were custom made for a bay window or box type headers or custom blinds.
We are moving and we are taking all of our curtains with us, as well 2 rods

In my experiences in Texas and PA, the window treatments are not part of the house. When we sold our house, the buyers wanted the window treatments and that was fine with us as they would not most likely work in our still undetermined new house.
