At my job we get X amount of hours that you can use for PTO. If you don't use them, they roll over into your sick bank. In 10 years I have never rolled hours over. They give us plenty of PTO so that I've never felt like I needed sick time. I get 25 days per year.

You can have double your annual accrual in your bank. When you hit that, you stop accruing.
DH has 12 weeks and I have to keep checking in to “suggest” he take a Friday or Monday, so he doesn’t miss out on accruing time.

You are entitled by law to 28 days paid vacation time off for full time employment here ( i.e working 5 days a week) Part time are on a pro rata basis of the 28 days. Some employers offer more especially after a certain amount of time with the company but that is up to the employer and is not a statutory requirement. All the employers I've worked for have allowed you to carry a few days over but only for a few months into the next entitlement. You can accrue your vacation time off throughout maternity leave or if you are sick ( for instance with a long term sickness such as cancer treatment) Sick pay is separate - you technically can have as much as you like in sick time off but questions will be asked if you take too many days off, especially a day here and there, without a very genuine reason that is backed up with a Doctors certificate. It depends on your contract of employment how long/many sick days you get paid for. Each employer has different rules. In addition to this we also get public holidays but that is up to the employer whether you're paid for those, thy are not obliged to pay for them ( a number of employers do though) or to give you time off in lieu of having to work on those days ( i.e retail/ cinemas/restaurants etc).

My vacation is use it or lose it. I also don't get paid for any remaining vacation if I quit.

We can roll over our sick and vacation leave but it’s capped at 2.5 times our annual leave. We don’t get any maternity leave though. So when I had my kids I had to make sure I had accrued enough time for maternity leave. I generally don’t use all of mine but even with Covid I’ve used a bunch of my sick time this year. My youngest broke her ankle in April and then my oldest had ankle surgery in August and has surgery scheduled on her other ankle on Wednesday. So I’ve taken time off to care for both of them. If I don’t have specific plans for the time off it’s easier to work than it is to get everything ready to be off and then catch up when I get back.
