We just finished watching it on Netflix.
We LOVED Nomadland. And both agreed that if My Octopus Teacher had been nominated for Best Picture rather than Best Documentary, it should have won for the former, rather than the latter.
Please, please, please watch it. It is stunning and beautiful and touching. I cried a few times (granted, my father died scuba diving in a kelp forest), because it was so amazing.

I had no idea what your title meant! I just had to see what you were talking about.
But, oh my goodness - how awful! If you’d shared that about your father before, I missed it. I just can’t imagine! I’m sorry.

Thank you for your kind thoughts - it has been almost 50 years now since my father died in that freak accident.
Every year I try to watch the Best Documentary winning film. Sometimes it is more like eating your broccoli 🥦- it is because I know that it is good for me to watch and think about the topic being explored.
Watching My Octopus Teacher was just breathtaking, touching, enlightening, and cinematic beauty.
I wanted to encourage everyone to give it a view. Especially since it is on Netflix, so free if you already subscribe.
I wanted, at an early age, to be a marine biologist. I only changed my plans after my father died and just couldn’t walk that path. I continue to love the ocean and marine life thought. This film was pure marine biology joy.

Did you cry because it was beautiful, or was it sad? I want to watch, just need to know what mood I need to be in!

Did you cry because it was beautiful, or was it sad? I want to watch, just need to know what mood I need to be in! All of the above. It was beautiful, it was sad, it was inspiring, it was amazing, it was all the feelings. Disclaimer: I love the ocean and marine life, so it may not hit all the same notes for you. That said, it won for best documentary, even with some stiff competition, so not only ocean-lovers found it moving.

I gotta know. Does the octopus die? I still have issues with Somersby from YEARS ago. That is what I am worried about too. Eta I have an answer I just checked does the dog die site, and yes, the octopus dies. She gets eaten by a shark. No way can I watch now.

I gotta know. Does the octopus die? I still have issues with Somersby from YEARS ago. Well, an octopus only has a lifespan of 1 year, so well…. She did not have an untimely death, however. She lived her octopus life to her fullest and made a human friend, which made her life very special and different compared to millions of other octopuses.

My girls and I watched this a few months ago. We laughed, we cried, I had no idea I could be so emotionally invested in an octopus. It is lovely.

Thanks for the glowing recommendation, I will definitely add this to my watch list. At one stage my DD wanted to be a marine biologist, so it will no doubt interest her. And also my aunt who has an interest in marine life and used to work for a dive company. elaine I had no idea about your dad. I know it was a long time ago, but I will add my condolences anyway. I saw you mention on another thread today or yesterday that he died when you were young. What an awful thing to have happened.

I was crying so hard 30 minutes into it that I had to stop, and I have still not been able to return to it. What I saw was absolutely stunning in every way but I just wasn’t in a good place emotionally at that time and couldn’t finish it. I’ve been very happy to see the accolades it’s received though.

I watched this by chance a few months (?) back. I think it was when injury had me still and was watching just any old random thing (s). Never heard of it prior
Best accidental viewing ever!
I keep telling my kids to watch it but I don't think they have yet. Next time DS asks " wanna watch a movie?" the answer will be "yes" and "this" just to get him to watch. Now, how to "force" the older out of the house kid to watch? hmmm...

Thank you for all the spoilers. I really have trouble with intentionally being sad, but my daughter’s major is marine biology so I should suck it up and watch it with her. Her last exam of freshman year is tomorrow, so we should watch tomorrow night to celebrate. We don’t have Netflix though. Where else can we watch?

I put in on randomly a few months ago doing my nails. I told everyone how amazing it was and got a lot of idiotic looks. Glad to see it won an Oscar. It was very well done.

elaine I am so sorry for the tragic loss of your father. This movie is on our watch list, and we will watch it with my dd, who is thinking of majoring in oceanography or marine biology. Nomadland is also amazing, a must-watch in my opinion, especially with the end of the moratorium on evictions, and an increase in homelessness, that is likely coming this summer

Are we all just ignoring the fact that most of us spent the whole time watching it wondering when he was going to bang the octopus? 😄 But in seriousness it really is a beautiful movie and I raved about it to anyone who would listen when I watched it. That octopus is a STAR.

elaine I am sorry to read about your father. Even though it was 50 years ago, he was still your dad. I teared up last night watching Pres Biden's address when he got to the cancer part. My dad June 2008 and during that part of the address I had tears running down my face. It doesn't help that a friend died a week ago and her sunset memorial is Saturday. I f*#&ing hate cancer. I am a ball of emotions right now due to the above and having some health problems that keep me on the edge. I would love to watch this but I am not sure I will make it through.
