It is still early in the emergence, but here is what it sounds like near my house this morning:

Sounds Twilight Zone-ish or somehow other worldly, doesn't it.

I’m ticked that it didn’t work from Flickr. They are so loud that we hear them in the house with the windows closed.

We get a lot of locusts here. They are loud, esp in the evening when there are hundreds around. I just looked it up to see if they sound similar to cicadas. Nope, cicadas are much louder.

Although I'm not sure why I'm listening to your cicadas when I have my very own right outside my window! We have the windows all closed because the AC is on and I still hear them quite well. haha ick.

WOAH! That sounds so....creepy scary movie like! Like a movie like The Quiet Place or what was that Tom Cruise one. IDK. It definitely sounds like you are living in a real life alien invasion!

And the daily thread someone new to the area posts on Nextdoor asking what that alien sound is. Seriously, multiple threads. And throwing in information like “even my family hears the sound, so I know that it isn’t just me.” 🤣🤣🤣

I'm getting flashbacks of the Little House on the Prairie books. There was a chapter on a locust invasion they suffered. I remember she described closing her eyes and she could not shut the image of the locusts out of her mind and the sounds they made driving them crazy.
What an interesting/annoying nature thing to be going through.

Here in my part of NoVA we didn't get them quite as early as a bit farther south... I have a friend who lives in Springfield and she was posting photos quite awhile before they showed up here. So those cicadas were enough ahead of ours that they started singing earlier. From a distance it absolutely sounded like aliens. She said "Mom, what is that siren-like sound that sounds like aliens? It's not those cicadas....is it?" With a look of horror on her face. hahaha I said "why yes, yes it is and they're coming to get you!" bwah-ha-ha-ha.

I am SO OVER THIS WHOLE THING! The sound is deafening at my house. They wake up my dog at 5 am and my friends with small kids are having problems keeping the kids asleep in the morning. My dog keeps eating them and they don't agree with his tummy.
I am so over these stupid things. It is REALLY bad in MD.
There was a woman on the community fb page complaining that someone's ac unit was dying and it was making a lot of noise between such and such street. It wasn't the unit, it was the cicadas. The poster isn't from this area and had no idea they were here. People were nice but everyone was like "REALLY?"

I'm in Fairfax VA and they are SO LOUD. Every day they get louder! I can hear them very clearly from inside the house and when you step outside it is almost deafening because we are surrounded by big trees, which is where they like to hang out. The sound goes in distinct waves. It's bizarre.

They aren’t too loud in DC proper yet, except for Rock Creek Park. But I know they will be making a racket in my backyard soon

Though, DH mentioned the noise is louder at our house than Dad’s, and he is surrounded by woods. They seem to be completely absent in town, where I work, thankfully.

It's so weird to me how they can be so localized. Our yard isn't too bad, but some of our neighbors' yards are just full of them. And the noise is insane! So creepy.

I know I am probably alone in this, but I love hearing them! And undoubtedly because they are not in my area, so it is a treat to hear them. I first heard a cicada several years ago in Nebraska. My ex-fiance's mother had passed so I went with him to help close up her nursing home room and attend the funeral. I started hearing the noise while still in the car heading to her place and I asked what that was. This was when I learned about these cicadas. He was surprised I didn't know what they were and I asked him if he had ever heard them in California. He realized he hadn't. I've never lived outside of California. I couldn't believe how loud they were and had to go have a closer look at them. They were all over the tree trunk and there were several dead on the ground. I was fascinated by them. Fortunately, none flew onto me.
This is also the first time I saw a firefly. They were flying all around my ex's mom's nursing home. To me, it was gorgeous! Like little twinkle lights flitting around the trees and bushes. Ex caught one for me to have a close look. He told me he used to catch them when he was a boy and then smash them on the cement, writing things with their luminescence. I stopped him from killing the one in his hand as he was about to smash it on the sidewalk and told him he was an ass for killing them when he was little too. Yeah, I know. Boys will be boys. But then he told me his mom was the one that showed that to him by smashing them on their sidewalk. I don't like anything killed. Well, except black widow spiders that come too close to my house. I would catch them and release them somewhere else if I wasn't so darned afraid I would get bitten. I have tried destroying their web in the hopes they would move on, but they just rebuild.

All. The. Time. Although I'm assuming they go to bed, although who knows. lol Also, if it's raining they don't make noise. In my neighborhood we've been praying for rain but all it got us was a huge storm that blew through quickly.

I was in MD for work earlier this week, and the sound was almost striking when I came out of the office. I only remember one other season when I’ve heard them like that.

In my neighborhood we've been praying for rain but all it got us was a huge storm that blew through quickly. These cicadas - unlike regular ones - don’t sing at night. It is just from sunrise to sundown. Overnight is when they emerge from underground and shed their shells. My 11:30 pm dog walk is somewhat creepy with tons of nymphs crawling around. It is quieter - just the usual crickets and frogs - but creepy crawly. There are a number of 17 & 13 year cicada broods, although Brood X, which is going on now, is the largest of the cyclical broods.

They clearly DO have a purpose in the eco-system! 😀 It really is an amazing 17 year feast for so many animals, including fish. Fishing during a cicada emergence is even affected, with using artificial flies for even large mouth bass working very well, because they become conditioned to getting a satisfying meal when they grab cicadas off the surface of the water and aren’t as discriminating over what they go up to bite. I hadn’t thought about the fertilizer aspect of when they all die, but that makes sense too.

Ha! I thought of you last night when I saw a video on Twitter of Manu Raju (sp??) on CNN getting all set up for a segment at the Capitol. No one noticed that he had a HUGE cicada climbing on the lapel of his jacket, up to the back of his neck. He jumped and cussed and whisked it off of him and I think he squished it. He was asking, "WTF--they're all over the place!!". Honestly, that would have grossed me out too!!!!!!!!!! I'll look for the clip!
