I only signed up on Tik Tok a couple of months or so ago to follow a story that was going around FB. Before that, the only thing I had ever heard about it was that kids used it to post videos of themselves dancing. Oh no... not what I'm seeing at all.
I never expected to see people spilling all the dirty details of their divorces, affairs, work situations... people with terrible illnesses or who have lost family members through any and all manners of death. Custody battles.. on and on. And I get sucked into watching it all! Is anyone else surprised by the amount of oversharing?

Its gotten really bad, honestly. I started watching cleaning / organizational stuff about 6 months ago. And I am about ready to delete it because its hard to find the good stuff without getting sucked into the ooveresharing/go fund me/ poor me crap.

I mean, it's getting them clicks (and many people are able to monetize that in many ways). So, not surprised. I've refined my algorithms to minimize a lot of the "drama" and focus on the funny!

How'd you do that? By just being super selective on what you watch/like? I don't follow unless I really like the account, and I intentionally like/comment on stuff I like so TikTok will show me more of that. My FYP will still show me some other stuff, but I quickly swipe past and that seems to have minimized it. It takes a bit of time. If you get sucked in and start watching whole vids (and parts 2,3,4, etc.) of the other stuff, you'll be presented with more of it. So if you want to see less, you kind of have to be less of a looky loo about that stuff. (I have been guilty, but so many of those stories are like "OH, Part 2 - well nothing really happened.")

I hardly ever see divorce or those other stories. I think it has to do with your algorithm they put you in. Or as they call it "side".. MY side is 50ish,cats, food, MN, make up, democrats and food. ha. It depends alot on what you like and for how long you watch the videos vs scroll past on your FYP.

I like watching the funny videos and the ones with dogs, but most of it is all this other crap. I saw one the other day where a lady was putting on her makeup and doing a play-by-play of what happened when her kids were with their dad. She needs to save all that for her lawyer and the judge.

Ohh I bet thats how I am getting so much crap. I usually look for part 1 etc to see if its anything interesting. I only follow 20 people so I need to be more intentional about liking and commenting so maybe more will show up on my FYP. Thanks for the tips.

My other half watches tiktok and sends me all the best ones, mostly animals.
It registers how long you spend watching something and if you interact with videos...if you scroll past without watching one to the end, it registers that you don't like those. I've found it picks up on my likes/dislikes pretty quickly.

I have enough rabbit holes to go down on You Tube that I’ve never been tempted by Tik Tok. DH used to be obsessed with the animal videos. He finally quit and deleted.

I don’t have an account. I sometimes see videos that are reposted by others, and I think they are cool, but I’ve managed to resist opening an account. I don’t need more social media. Lol!

Same here - I have never created an account and don't use Tik Tok, I've never been interested and as katlady says - I just don't need more social media.

And so many people are creating TikTok compilations, that I can watch the comedians and animal videos in one complete YT video. The only wrinkle is I don't always know if it's the original creator posting to YT. I strongly dislike people who steal content and re-upload to get $$$. It's become quite widespread on YT.

I was just looking at one of my daughter's (in her 20s) friends and couldn't believe how much he shared. Granted, he's pretty popular with like 200 thousand followers, but I was surprised at the stuff he was telling his followers.

Also you can press and hold on a video, then click on not interested and it will refine your algo even more by removing similarities from your fyp
I love tiktok but it took a me a few weeks to get my content where I like it. I still have to occasionally scrub it

It's so incredibly tedious to me when people at work continually try to share their dumb TikTok feeds with me or send me videos. I hate it. I have the app but I'm not willing to sit and watch endless stupid videos of people who think they're funny, or the staged stupid "pranks", or any of it really.

Is anyone else surprised by the amount of oversharing? I was astonished at first. Now, I can scroll right on by most of that. I saw one the other day where a lady was putting on her makeup and doing a play-by-play of what happened when her kids were with their dad. She needs to save all that for her lawyer and the judge. I definitely keep on swiping when I get to the makeup people pouring out their side of the story. Nope. LOL I mostly get cows and farming. Big surprise. My most favorite TikTok account is Homestead Diaries. Oh - it is just a thing of pure beauty. It is a gentleman from Wyoming who still lives and works on his families ranch. He reads an excerpt from his Great Grandmothers daily diary, from 100 years ago.. It is usually a short line or two, but he accompanies it with current video from his ranch. Sometimes it was his Great Grandfather writing, if the Grandmother wasn't able to that day. Simple notes on the weather, intertwined with what was going on in their lives. They dealt with losing several babies shortly after birth, so the undertones of this are heartbreaking... but of course there will be a good ending, since their is the Great Grandson doing the videos. He has THE BEST voice for it too. Give it a listen! If you are on a PC, you can just go right to TikTok without an account. Taylor Barnette - Homestead Diaries

Funny I never hardly see those kind.. mine are all dogs, cute kids (Yeet baby is my favorite) and cleaning ones.. Oh and some dance ones but I tend to follow older people dancing and Twitch.. I love watching him and his wife dance.. especially when she was pregnant (actually I think those videos were on FB.. I don't remember.. haha)
I do find when I see one like the other day, a gal was leaving her husband due to abuse and she is literally in the car driving away. My first thoughts were why are you sharing this, won't he see it and I would worry about the safety of the baby. I watched that one video and stopped so I wouldn't go down that rabbit hole.
I find it relaxing at the very end of my day.. I get in bed, watch about 1/2 hour of TikTok and go to sleep. Other than that, I don't watch much unless I am bored in the car waiting for someone or something like that.

I haven't seen much of that. Most of mine is funny stuff, kids, dogs, cats doing cute stuff, some cooking, etc. Lots of husband/wife/parenting humor. Work humor. Some liberal/social justice stuff etc.

I like TikTok, actually. I "joyscroll" TikTok rather than doomscroll. Comedians, fellow educators, dogs, musicians. It's a good time for me. Facebook, on the other hand, just bores me.

Oh i love a good dose of other peoples bullshit- it makes me feel so much better about my shenanigans. The 4 most current things on my tiktok feed are lesbians, prisoners, Amish guys, and people with ADHD. I don't get a lot of the messiness, but every now and then it pops up

I usually scroll at night and crack up and half the shit I am seeing. I really like makeup videos too. Some of those people are SO talented! If you don't want to see something, just hold the video down and select 'not interested'. And yes, the longer you watch something, the more videos like it you will see.

I can’t remember the actual name. Videos of her letting out the farm animals in the am and in at night. It’s somewhat relaxing and enjoyable. Another favorite is a guy I’m mpls and his 2 cats. They are hilarious
