Next story involves 8 and 9 year old boys… From the article… “When deputies responded to the scene they were eventually able to locate 62-year-old Danny Andrew Smith who was unresponsive as he was slumped over the steering wheel of his tractor which was still running but had gone down an embankment before striking a tree. Following an investigation into the incident, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office announced that a petition had been filed in Family Court charging an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy with involuntary manslaughter regarding the shooting death of Smith, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.“After a consultation with the Solicitor’s Office, and based on the evidence obtained in our ongoing investigation, we believe that both juvenile males discharged a firearm in a reckless manner in the direction of Mr. Smith who was bush hogging on some family property,” said Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw. “At this time, it is still undetermined which shot ultimately struck and killed Mr. Smith. However, based upon South Carolina law, the hand of one is the hand of all and that is why Family Court has been petitioned in regards to charging both juveniles with Involuntary Manslaughter.” Based upon evidence obtained during the investigation as well as from the autopsy, authorities determined that Smith had sustained a single gunshot wound to the back which ultimately killed him. MORE: Cop in critical condition after being shot multiple times while conducting welfare check In South Carolina, juveniles under the age of 10 cannot be detained so both of the juvenile suspects have been remanded to the custody of their parents as the judicial proceedings continue, according to Sheriff Crenshaw. “The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and due to that fact, no information will be released that will identify the juveniles in this case,” said Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. “At this time, no information about motive or where the firearm was obtained will be released due to the ongoing investigation and any additional details will be released as conditions and developments warrant.” MORE: 9-year-old boy accidentally shot in chest by father after alleged road rage incident The weapon that was allegedly used in the shooting, a .22 caliber rifle, has been recovered and examined by the SLED forensics lab in Columbia, South Carolina. It is not currently clear which boy pulled the trigger that killed Smith but the investigation into the shooting is ongoing” So in what world does anyone think it’s acceptable to allow 2 kids, 8 & 9 to wander around with a rifle unsupervised? It is absolutely, positively insane to criminally charge kids that young with a crime involving recklessness. Of course they are reckless! They are literally in third grade! The criminals are the people who were reckless enough to give elementary school kids access to a loaded firearm.

JFC. Whose was the pistol? It didn’t just materialize out of thin air. Will the adult be charged? When I read about these cases I think of all the people who say, “My kids know better than to touch my guns.” No, they don’t. Kids are curious. Kids eat Tide pods on a dare and take part in asinine Tik Tok challenges. But you think they’ll never touch that gun in your night stand? Please. Lock up your freaking guns.

The gun belonged to a visitor who left it loaded on the seat of his truck. The child was riding her new bike when she found the gun and picked it up. They are investigating, and no charges will be filed until the investigation is complete. The girl’s father was a former captain in the local sheriff’s department.

If he had kept the gun on his person, used an in-car gun safe, or even just locked his freaking car, the child would be alive today. This should be criminal negligence (or whatever the relevant statute is in that state) at the very least. And this is also everyone's yearly reminder that the vast majority of guns used by criminals are stolen from people's homes and cars, where they were improperly secured. It's time to start holding those "responsible gun owners" accountable. behindthebadge.com/a-new-survey-confirms-the-majority-of-guns-being-used-by-criminals-are-obtained-from-peoples-homes-and-cars/These tragedies are entirely preventable.
