I hate it when you try to clean a still partially frozen turkey. I can't remember if it's a week before or the Saturday before that is best for taking the bird out of the freezer. What's everyones plan?

I take mine out on Saturday at the latest. I used to take it out on Sunday, but it was still partially frozen. I don't care what the charts say...it takes longer than they suggest.

It probably depends on your weather, at least if you defrost it in the garage, as I do. I'm in California and I don't take a frozen turkey out until Monday or even Tuesday, if the weather is warm-ish.

OMG, inside the house, I'd probably take it out on Tuesday. ETA wait, you guys are defrosting in the fridge, aren't you? I just figured that out. Just ignore me.

I'm assuming you're defrosting in the fridge not at room temp? If so, I'm taking mine out tomorrow but I have 2 and they tend to take a little longer. I keep an eye on them and if they are still frosty the day before I'm going to cook them I submerge them in cold water to speed things up.

I haven't even purchased the turkey yet! This holiday has really come up quickly for me.

It depends on weight. for every 4 lbs, it should come out of the freezer 24 hours before you intend to cook it, so a 12 pound turkey should come out on Monday, a 16 lb turkey should come out on Sunday. However, I would take it out one day earlier than that, especially if you plan to brine it.

I have a 15 pound turkey and I will be letting it thaw in the fridge. I think I will put it in the fridge on Friday just to be safe. I want to brine it and I want it to be completely thawed when I do that. Thanks everyone for your input!

I take all the guesswork out of it by getting a fresh one. Although there have been three turkeys walking around our yard for a short time each day for several weeks now so I might just go all Pilgrim on them and get one for free.

I haven't bought my stuff for Thanksgiving yet but I am going shopping probably Saturday or Sunday and I'll start defrosting it right away so I can clean it.

So glad we started buying fresh turkeys a few years back. I'll pick it up the day before, just have to make sure I have a shelf cleared in the fridge first. I can't seem to get dinner defrosting on time, I'd totally be trying to cook a frozen turkey

I always move mine to the fridge the Sunday before, but it's always still a little frozen. I'm going to move it on Saturday this time.

Mine will come out of the freezer Sunday, and it will...sit on the counter for the day, and likely overnight with a towel over it. Then Monday while I'm at work it will go in the fridge. While it's out, I promise it's still icy cold the whole time. Monday night back out on the counter until bed. Repeat Tuesday, and Wednesday in the fridge until it's time to prep it. It'll still be icy inside likely. It's a 26# bird this year!

We have a 20 lb turkey and DH plans to take it out (put in the fridge) on Friday. We'll cook it on Thursday.
