We knew it was coming. Carol has had Alzheimer’s for a decade now and ceased to know us 5 years ago. She’s had abdominal cancer (we never put her through surgery to find out what type - she wouldn’t have understood) and finally passed of that.
We planned a trip to Pittsburgh for our anniversary (today) and my younger son’s birthday (it is tomorrow). We went to the Pirates v Phillies game. Right after we got back to the hotel, my Dh got the call from hospice to let us know she had passed.
Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease- my husband lost his mother years ago, and is left with so many conflicting emotions at losing her in another way. I have missed the woman who was my MIL for many years now. In this time of COVID - especially in her part of WV - we have decided against a formal memorial service. Not many of her friends are still alive, and none have seen her for years. So, we don’t need a gathering to facilitate anyone’s mourning - Dh and I have each other to work it through with.
If you could spare a kind thought for my husband in this time, I would greatly appreciate it.

I’m so sorry or your loss. My dad developed a rapid dementia about nine months before he died, and I relate to your and your husband’s feelings about losing her twice. I hope you’re able to celebrate your anniversary in future years without too much sadness. My gallows humor kicked in when my mom died two years ago—she died on my husband’s birthday. My husband is notoriously bad with remembering dates, so I joke that she died on his birthday so he’d never forget the date.

We lost my father on our 1st wedding anniversary. It was our 22nd anniversary yesterday. Too many similarities, eh?

I’m so sorry.  I hope you had a lovely day prior to her passing that will hold some fond memories you can hold close to your hearts. I have a brother-in-law with dementia. My poor sister is watching him slip away. She’s is so much denial that I worry for her as time passes by. It’s so hard to watch both of them struggle. |

I am so sorry. I can relate to some of what you’re experiencing having lost my mom to cancer and dementia a few years ago. It’s difficult losing a parent, no matter how old or how prepared you are. Hugs to your family.
