I can’t remember NOT living with a cat outside of college. I just counted up that I’ve had 16 cats in my 54 years. And they’ve all been so different not counting the cat my mum adopted when I was in college - I've had 16 as well and 2 foster kitties. We're currently at 6 (18, 11.5, 11, 11, 13wks and 13wks) I forgot foster about 7 foster kitties. We are at three right now - 8, 9, and 10. You have quite an age range!

You've gotten some great responses from the other Peas above. I've had cats since I was 8 years old so it's been the last 53 years that I've shared my life with cats. They are amazing creatures. Full of love and mischief, each one with their own personalities. I also recommend chewy.com for all your pet needs. Not only do they have the lowest prices, but their customer service is the best there is! We just bought our Jesse his second cat tree and when it came one piece that was covered with carpeting-well the carpeting on that one piece was torn. DH called Chewy and they said, "No problem, we'll get a new one out to you right away. Just keep the one you got that was damaged instead of bothering to send it back" They are always like that. DH is considering adding on to Jesse's new tree with parts from the damaged cat tree making it higher. Their cat trees are much cheaper (at least half) of what you'll find at Petsmart or Petco. And they are very well made. Jesse prefers the cat trees with sisal on the legs because he loves to stretch and scratch the sisal. As for toys Jesse loves the "da bird" toy. He likes anything with feathers that he can chase and pounce on. He prefers interactive toys where I play with him. He's an only cat which is why he prefers to play with a person rather than himself. Each cat likes different toys but they all love the boxes they come in That's great customer service! We have ordered some things for our dog from chewy. We were looking at the cat Halloween costumes and they are so funny! I told my husband that since our youngest goes to college in a couple weeks, and no kids at home, we have to dress up the dog and cat and walk them in the neighborhood parade, haha! The cat is still at our house and I tease my daughter that we may not give him back to her! We love the cat!

Please tell your daughter how much I love that she looked to adopt a senior/overlooked cat. I can’t remember NOT living with a cat outside of college. I just counted up that I’ve had 16 cats in my 54 years. And they’ve all been so different. I hope Smokey lives a long happy life with your daughter. That's so sweet, thanks so much! I will tell her!
He had his first vet appt. today and the vet said that aside from him being a little "chunky" (and she said not our fault since we just got him, haha!) he looks great!

Great advice so far!! Save boxes, in general cats like confined spaces. They will fit themselves into a box you think it too small. Or if they don't fit, parts will hang out!! Just be careful, no rubber bands, no yarn or string.. No tinsel at Christmas. The shoe laces should be ok, they are bigger. I know of a cat that swallowed a clear bra strap. Wider than a shoe lace. It was a very expensive bra strap! The cat's owner now has to be very careful not to leave things like that lying around.

Yes - the older two were both strays we've had for 10 and 11 years - they're best buddies, the middle two were the kittens the 11.5 was pregnant with when she showed up. One of the 13 wks came home at 5wks after being found in an engine compartment of a truck at DH's work, the other we got this past weekend from a foster family because kittens need playmates.

She swallowed one once and she had to get an enema to get it out. So I thought I had all of my hair ties hidden, but she managed to find another one and that one required surgery. I wouldn't trust shoe laces, either. I once saw tinsel hanging out of my sister's old cat's butt. Cats will eat the stupidest things.

In my experience, cats don't eat stupid things the way dogs do (except when they're kittens), but maybe I've been lucky.

Our Oreo (died in January at 17) loved strings, thread, blind cords, ribbons....and yes, we sometimes found stuff hanging out the other end. He luckily never needed surgery/vet trip but some do. And our Mini (11) has recently discovered the thread in my sewing machine so I can no longer leave it threaded....

Our cat that we adopted as a kitten was soo easy - the spray bottle method worked to keep him from scratching furniture and jumping on countertops. He liked those cardboard scratching pads. To litter train him, we showed him the box, and that was it. My mother-in-law's cat that we inherited goes through spells of peeing on the carpet. No rhyme, reason or pattern. A few days of cat anti-depressants seem to break the cycle and then she is good for weeks and weeks. At one time she had 4 litter boxes, basement, garage, and family room bathroom both clumping and non clumping. My tip is to keep the litter box scrupulously clean.
A cat in the lap on a cold winter day is heavenly.
