First of all, thanks @crack-a-lackin and scrapmaven . revirdsuba99 - It's a little tricky because my mum never really mastered English and in the 24 years she's been retired she's lost a lot of what she had known. So not just any guest would work. I'll see if there are family members who don't want to walk that wouldn't mind taking mum back to the house... moodyblue - There ARE park restrooms near the ceremony site. I have a feeling DS and I will go over early in the day and clean the park bathrooms, and we'll bring our own hand soap and paper towels in case there aren't any. I may donate a toilet brush to the cause! The walk will only be AFTER the ceremony and it's almost all downhill. Not a hard walk but you def. don't want to be wearing high heels! The main reason I wouldn’t want to do the walk is that I sweat - I sweat easily and a lot, and I sweat from my head. I wouldn’t be comfortable at the reception if my clothes and my hair were sweaty. But that’s me, and maybe not true for everyone. OMG moodyblue - we might be twins separated at birth! That is true for me too! Maybe I WILL volunteer to take Mum back to the house!~

well.. my daughter and her wife walked in their wedding gowns down our 1 block hill, then took a muni bus about 1 mile, then walked another 1/4 mile and caught a shuttle van (I hired them) down the hill to a park for the wedding. made for some great pictures. about 4 attendants went with them.
I think with the crowd you are expecting, I would just serve water (maybe those cartons of water.. compostable) and light drinks to the guests at the first hour.. and have water they can take on the walk. if it is mostly locals, they can figure out uber if they need to
we just added a small gluten free cake for my daughter's mother in law, to be on the side of the non gluten free desserts (its its and gs cookies). we did make signs to list contents of dishes, and whether they were vegan or vegetarian or not. that helped the guests. best of luck

I’m curious about the drum circle. Who will play? And who will cart all the drums two miles back to your house?

Logistics aside, I think the menu sounds so much more interesting than the usual fare. I love mezze (and borscht too!) so everything sounds lovely. Maybe some other items to go with all the cheeses you have lined up? Olives, gherkins, etc? Baklava sounds like it would fit in perfectly for dessert if you didn't want to do a cake. Thanks! Mezze will have many items including olives, artichoke hearts, etc. There's a roasted red pepper spread at TJs that I love with bread or crackers and we may get some to add to the offerings. Baklava and Tiramisu are both yummy. DD, one other guest and I avoid gluten. I think there's a nice GF bakery in the area, I have notes on it somewhere. I think there will be a nice assortment of dessert options. DH and I are getting a sampler package of Polish desserts from a large Polish deli/bakery in New Jersey this week, may order some of those items for the wedding too. (we and dd/df are both getting samplers of 6 types of pierogi from them too.) It's a little bit of a drive, but if you can pick up the day before the GF desserts from Sweet Diplomacy are amazing and no one will ever know they are gf.

I’m curious about the drum circle. Who will play? And who will cart all the drums two miles back to your house? Drummer hired to do the drumming, we don't have to do anything with drums. I think he may bring extra drums, not sure. But we'll all be in a circle. beaglemom Thanks so much for the GF bakery rec!

I absolutely love the sound of this wedding ( even though I couldn’t manage the walk). It sounds all about the couple, doing what they love. What a wedding should truly be about. I can’t wait to see the photos.

Wedding schedule:
3-4 pm Gather and mingle in redwood grove (this works for this particular crowd) 4 pm. Drumming circle followed by ceremony which will end around 4:30. 4:30 – 5:30 – More visiting in the park Serving Prosecco, lemonade and water and trying to figure out what to have for snacks before most people will walk with bride and groom the 2 miles to their house, the reception venue. Reception food:
Barszcz made by DD, her Babcia's recipe (Polish version of Borscht) Polish food station: Assorted Pierogi and pickled herring sliders (we Poles love pickled herring, and maybe the non-Polish guests will try them and learn they like them too.) Waffle station with savory (smoked salmon +) and sweet toppings Greek Mezze stationAssorted Cheeses with grapes, crackers, baguette 4 different artisanal vegan cheeses made by an incredible cheesemaker quite local to me. NO ONE can tell these are vegan. They are delicious, and unlike commercially sold cheeses, contain no oil, coconut or otherwise. Pricey but a real treat GF crackers. Desserts: TBD Thanks very much if you care to share your ideas! Yes s the reception meant to be dinner? Is it sit down or standing? When I think stations I sometimes think standing, which is why I ask. I think if this is standing are the food items ok to eat with fingers? Waffles that are bite sized? Soup shooters versus spoon and bowl? Or is it all sit down? If this was meant to be dinner I’d say you’d need something that feels more entree. If you just want snack type food then the meal sounds great. If you want it to be dinner then I’d add something more substantial. Maybe some spanikopita and hummus / pita at the Greek station. Or a tomato mozzarella skewer or salmon souvlaki skewer. I guess because I can’t eat waffles I’m looking for something substantial elsewhere. I would also move the cheese / crackers to the park for before the walk.

It’s great to have such a personalized wedding. I’ve never seen the redwoods, so that sounds lovely.
Not to dwell on the two mile walk, but I’m curious if the guests have to walk one way, won’t they be walking both ways? If not, how did they get to the site in the first place?

It sounds like a great wedding and a lot of fun.
I am stuck on the walk, though. Wouldn't you have to walk 2 miles back to your car after the reception?

I want to be invited! I think it sounds so fun! I’m all about the pierogies and the walk through the woods. And I want one of those popsicles! I would love to see the photos of this.

Sounds good! Question… people will be walking 2 miles? In dress clothes? When will this wedding take place? I’m picturing here in my part of CA, it will be blazing hot until at least October! And I assume walking back as well. I think that would be more annoying than the walk to the reception. I’m so like the details of the wedding and that it is so “them”.

It sounds divine. I would love to come 😁 maybe I can courier something if that deli stuff from NJ lol.
I’d have bite size seasonal fruit or vegetable based items with the lemonade & prosecco in the grove ( perhaps pickled veggies ) but I have no idea how to get them there exactly. I’d serve them on skewers I think since everyone is standing and visiting.

I can’t wait to see the photos. The whole thing sounds delightful. I'm imagining dappled sunlight, trailing flowers and lots of happy chatter. This is my thought as well! As soon as I read “drum circle”, I knew it was a non-traditional wedding. How lovely for the couple. As far as food at 4:30, I’d use compostable cups and have some pretty glass water servers (the kind with the spigot) filled with berries and lemon slices. Someone who doesn’t want to walk to the reception can bring them back to the house in their car. Along with the water, I’d serve a handmade granola bar (does that sound too stereotypical?) in a pretty cupcake paper or glassine envelope. If you like baking, you could make them ahead of time and freeze or find a bakery to make them. I like the idea of the cheeses then, but I think it would be a lot to haul from place to place. If there are older relatives, I’d have a plan in place for them to drive back to the reception. Just so that they will feel comfortable attending. But I love the idea of the happy couple leading their family and friends through the redwood forest!

What a lovely day this will be!
I would serve almonds or a dried fruit trail mix in paper cones/cups with the beverages. No refrigeration needed and could be carried on the hike as guests choose.

I can't get past that part either. A 2 mile walk in dress clothes and dress shoes!!! in the heat. OMG these people are nicer than I am because I'd be RSVPing no very quickly. Add me to the no I'm sorry I can't make it list. It sounds magical, however, I have harlequin's syndrome. I'd be dripping wet before I walked too far with the use of medicine. I cannot imagine doing this in wedding attire. EDIT is....ok, so they walk 2 miles to the reception. How are they getting back the 2 miles to their cars? I'm guessing it may be dark. Is the path lit and it's up hill.

I know you said grapes, but it would be nice to have some other refreshing fruit. Maybe fruit skewers?
congratulations!

I love an atypical wedding. If the guests are able to walk 2 miles in the woods, I'm guessing this is a fairly healthy group. What about a fancy granola bar? Be sure to pass out bottled water for the walk. I've made these from the Smittenkitchen blog and they are delicious and filling. It's energizing finger food. Smitten Kitchen recipe

I believe Flanz has already stated guests are only walking one way. And there is a Lyft on every corner really not something to worry about.

I’m curious about the drum circle. Who will play? And who will cart all the drums two miles back to your house? Not sure what the local customs would be, but our local First Nations community often holds drumming circles. They have experienced drummers who can be booked for events outside their community. When they are booked, they choose how many drummers to bring to your event.
The drums are hide stretched over a wooden ring, no more than about 18-24 inches across, so very light and easy to carry. They are held in one hand then beaten with the other--either a bare hand or a soft paddle.

However, I can't think of any wedding I've attended where most of the guests could do 2 miles even in the city. Sadly, you would have to have a pretty young crowd here to add a two mile walk to the wedding activities.

Starts at 3-4 pm, I don't see the need for food at 4:30-5:30 when after is the reception. Definitely serve drinks at 4:30. If you really wanted to have some snacks why not serve it from 3-4? Mmm borscht and peorgy what a meal! I miss perogy now that I'm gluten free. I'm sitting on that missing pierogi bench with you. I can eat my fill of wheat products when visiting Europe (Poland, Germany, Italy) but can't handle N. American wheat. Thank you Monsanto. When I'm home in Canada I buy flour from Poland and bring it home with me in my checked luggage and we've made pierogi from that. My aunt goes to Arizona for the winter and has a gotten a friend from Iowa hooked on Canadian flour. She would always bring a bag down for herself and have a Ukrainian Christmas party, with perogy of course. So the friend only likes them made with Canadian flour. I haven't been to Europe so I'm not sure if I could handle it over there. It gives me migraines and does make me a bit bloated.
