I read The Night Swim and thought it was pretty good. 3/5
In The Night Swim, a new thriller from Megan Goldin, author of the "gripping and unforgettable" (Harlen Coben) The Escape Room, a true crime podcast host covering a controversial trial finds herself drawn deep into a small town's dark past and a brutal crime that took place there years before.

I read The Night Swim back in August 2021 and thought it was very good, just as good as her first book, The Escape Room. I’m looking forward to her new book coming out 8/9/22………….. STAY AWAKE (‘22) by Megan Goldin. Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi with no idea where she is or how she got there. When she’s dropped off at the door of her brownstone, a stranger answers—a stranger who now lives in her apartment and forces her out in the cold. She reaches for her phone to call for help, only to discover it’s missing, and in its place is a bloodstained knife. That’s when she sees that her hands are covered in black pen, scribbled messages like graffiti on her skin: STAY AWAKE. Two years ago, Liv was living with her best friend, dating a new man, and thriving as a successful writer for a trendy magazine. Now, she’s lost and disoriented in a New York City that looks nothing like what she remembers.

This week I read:
Wish You Were Here Picoult, Jodi 3 1/2 stars I used to love her books but for some reason lately they just aren't that interesting to me.
The Reading List Adams, Sara Nisha * 4 stars This was a slow read for me. I enjoyed it but wasn't eager to pick it back up so it took me days to read.
A Dark and Secret Place Williams, Jen 3 stars This was not a great reading week for me haha

Last wk I read The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood. I gave it a 4/5. For being such a genius, she sure liked to lie, and that bothered me. But overall I liked the story, and this authors writing.
Now I'm back to my slutty fantasy books and I'm reading Gild (The Plated Prisoner #1) by Raven Kennedy, and it's been interesting so far. So liking it.

This week I've read: The Mistake by Katie McMahon 4* - Australian setting/Aus author. Bec and Kate are sisters, but they couldn't be less alike. Bec lives the domestic dream with her surgeon husband Stuart and three perfect children. So why is she so attracted to free-spirited Ryan? Kate's life is hardly a dream. But when she meets Adam - tall, kind, funny - things start looking up. Until she finds out he's been keeping secrets from her. Then there is the incident both sisters are desperate to ignore ... Will they discover that some mistakes can't be put right? This was a good read. If you like books by Liane Moriarty or Sally Hepworth it is in a similar vein. The Memory Keeper by Jenny Hale 3.5- 4* One snowstorm, one flight, one life-changing phone call... From the USA Today bestselling author of The Summer House comes a story about finding lost loves, chasing dreams, and the people who show up when they're needed the most. The Memory Keeper is the perfect escape for fans of Debbie Macomber, Pamela Kelley, and Susan Mallery. I'm not into romance books as such but was looking for something a bit lighthearted with a decent story to it. I've enjoyed a few other Jenny Hale books and this was another good read. I'm going to pop into this thread more often as I've gotten some good suggestions here

I finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and really enjoyed it. I’ve decided to start rating books this year and I gave this one 5 stars because it kept me interested and seemed almost like a biography. I wasn’t as connected to Monique, but hearing about Evelyn’s husbands and the circumstances surrounding each marriage was really well done. I needed a good book that kept me wanting to read “just one more chapter.”
I’m now reading Somebody’s Daughter a memoir by Ashley Ford. I’m about a quarter of the way through it. It is interesting and she definitely had a different childhood than I did. It’s interesting to read her experiences and reactions as a child and as she grew up. She was raised by a single mother because her dad was in prison for most of her childhood. More to follow when I finish the book.
I enjoyed The Push. It is a thriller and not a feel good book, but I don’t know that I would call it traumatizing. It’s definitely not comparable to We Need To Talk About Kevin—at least I don’t remember it that way.

I'm continuing to read An Echo In The Bone by Diana Gabaldon and enjoying it very much. This is the second time I'm reading this book. I'm re reading it in order to get ready for the latest Outlander book. After I finish this one I will next read Written In My Own Heart's Blood and after that be finally ready for Go tell the Bees I Am Gone. In the meantime I also like to read non-fiction books. I don't like to read two fiction books at the same time. I don't remember where I heard about it (it might well have been here) but I'm really enjoying and learning a lot from How To Be A Tudor by Ruth Goodman. The author lived on a replicated Tudor farm and drew on her own hands on experience to write the book. It's been fascinating to me to really learn how people dressed, bathed, ate, worked and worshiped during these times. My favorite genre is historical fiction and I've always enjoyed reading about this period in history. I read How To Be a Tudor a few years ago and gave it five stars! She has another book called How To Be a Victorian which I also enjoyed.

I’m listening to The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles. He also wrote Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility, both of which I loved. This one is written in the same tradition - lots of interesting detail and a solid plot line. So far this is a five star for me.

Thanks for the recommendations, ladies; I have requested a few books from the library after reading about them here this week. But I can't keep up with all the awesome books I find out about here!
I read The Plea by Steve Cavanagh; I really enjoy him and this series.
I am currently reading A Line To Kill by Anthony Horowitz; another new to me author that I am really enjoying. If you like old school who-dun-its, this one's for you.

I am taking on A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I've had it for a while and kept putting it off, but finally decided dive in. I'm two chapters in and hoping it gets better... This can be a difficult read; but I encourage you to keep going. This is one book that, when I got to the end, I had to let sit a while before I decided if it was one of the BEST books I ever read...or one of the WORST. I will say, it is WAY TOO LONG; they could have cut out about 200 pages and still had a great read.

The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. This one started out strong for me, but it dragged on, and on, and on…by the end. I felt like I clawed my way through the last pages. Ugh.
Wounded by Love by St. Prophoryous. I read a couple of pages at a time of a book while I brush my teeth, and this one was the most recent one read that way. A collection of sayings by this modern saint (died in 1991) as well as his life’s story. There was much to ponder and I’m glad that I read it in a bit or two at a time.
My Lady Jane by Brodi Ashton,Jodi Meadows, and Cynthia Hand. I think that I learned about this from Anne, a historical retelling, with a twist. Laugh-out-loud funny – who knew that my lifelong historical fiction passion would be such a fit for a YA book such as this? You can’t think too hard about the plot, and there are definitely moments where the story drags a bit, but wow! So fun!
The Power by Naomi Alderman. This one is a Book Club for Tuesday and I just borrowed it on Saturday, so I had to put aside my currently reading to get through this one. I found it deeply uncomfortable and violent, but I know many found it to be empowering.

We Need to Talk about Kevin This was one of the most disturbing books I have read. Push is not near as bad. We Need To Talk About Kevin is one of my top ten books ever. I rarely reread books; but this one, I have a number of times. Sometimes, if I have nothing to read, I pull it out and just open it to a random page and start reading.

I started reading this years ago - probably not long after it was released - and never finished it. I don’t know if I still have the hard copy I first bought - many books didn’t make it when we moved internationally. I have bought two books so far from this week’s thread, and a couple more are on my Amazon list so that I remember them. It is really dangerous to my book budget to read this thread!

I listened to News of the World. It was ok, but not spectacular. I also read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I liked it. I didn't really connect with Monique but I thought there were a lot of good parts of the story that resonated with me. I'm listening to The Vanishing Half now and not sure how I feel about it so far. I am reading The Seven Husbands... right now. I am enjoying it, but I agree with your feelings about Monique so far.

I read Billy Summers - Stephen King. I enjoyed it. I put it on hold at the library and it just came up. I wasn’t outstanding but a good solid read for me. And Zero Repeat Forever- Gabrielle Pendergast This was put on my radar from TikTok and I have to say it was pretty good. It’s kind of a sci-if YA in two narratives, I enjoyed it and will probably read the next in the series at some point.

I am reading Saint X by Alexis Shaitkin. I thought it would be a pretty straightforward murder mystery, but it is so much deeper. A young college student goes missing on the last night of a family vacation in the Caribbean, and her body is found a days later. The book the. Follows the family in the years after. Her younger sister - only 7 at the time of the crime - becomes totally obsessed with finding our who her sister really was, while the parents seem to devolve into people just going through the motions of life. I really liked this one, it wasn’t at all what I expected.

I finished Project Hail Mary. It was okay. Andy Weir is definitely a talented writer but I don't think I'm the proper audience. My engineer husband really enjoyed it, though. I started Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. It'quite good so far, but may be a little more emotional than me and my anxiety disorder can handle this month. We shall see. Might need to find some fluffy mystery stories instead. Those were two of my favorites reads last year.

But, my daughter bought it for me for Christmas so I’m determined to read it through! I just finished Hamnet by Maggie o’Farrell. A good friend had raved about it and it was OK but not outstanding. I also recently finished Fight Night by Miriam Toews. I found the writing style a little bit odd but often this is the case with Mariam Toews but I did really like it. Perhaps more in retrospect then while I was reading it.

This week I read The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg and enjoyed it so much I started the next in the series, The Glass Magician. They are fantasy books set in a fictional Victorian England. After going to the equivalent of a magic high school, Ceony is bound to paper as a material and assigned to apprentice with a paper magician. It's a charming story, on the edge between YR and a light romance. Just what I need right now.

I started listening to The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. It’s 24 hours long. I’ve listened to the first few chapters and it really feels overly descriptive. I read a review which describes the story as a Hallmark movie wrapped up in an encyclopaedia. I’m really not sure if I can dedicate 24 hours to one story.
