Good for you! Even with all of your experience, I hope you learn something new every day. I’m taking French courses here and they are kicking my butt! I have class for 3 hours twice a week and must spend another 2-3 hours most days studying. It’s a lot for my old brain to process. I wish you all the luck in your endeavor!

I can’t imagine a better teacher than you. And if you’re getting fulfillment on the other end in the doing of it, even that much better!
I admire you for setting this goal and reaching it.

Good for you and good luck. Studying at an older age, especially after such a long break is a bit hard on the mind and can be exhausting but it will be all worth it in the end.

No matter how many years you teach, it will be worth it. You could still volunteer later, too! Way to go, elaine.

I am so happy you are going into education! We need all the good teachers we can get. I don't care if it is only for 5 years. I so admire that you are doing this!

I am impressed!
It is too bad your state doesn’t have an alternative pathway. Many years ago, I was able to take a short term contract teaching 6th grade via the alternative pathway in NJ. Was also offered a job to teach high school by a local private school. They’ve asked me a few times to do a seminar style history or English course, like what I did when Dd was homeschooling. I’ll probably do it when I retire, if they are still interested by then!

Was also offered a job to teach high school by a local private school. They’ve asked me a few times to do a seminar style history or English course, like what I did when Dd was homeschooling. I’ll probably do it when I retire, if they are still interested by then! This *is* the alternative pathway in VA! 😂 Seriously, I could get my teaching license in a number of states without doing anything else. But this is considered the drastic shortcut here. I really want my K-6 license, because I love and am really good at 4-6th grade, but VA would make me go back and take a year’s worth of undergrad gen Ed classes (like 2 science classes with lab, retake Algebra, etc) in addition to a semester of teaching methods courses, in order to be eligible to get a K-6 endorsement on my license. I understand and don’t have an issue with the teaching methods education classes, but I’ll be damned if I’m going back to take undergrad Chemistry in order to teach 4th graders about the ecosystem, simply because my 40 y.o. college non-traditional transcripts don’t indicate that there was a lab for my science courses. And the Dept of Ed in VA - in all seriousness - will not consider graduate school transcripts in making these decisions. It is *solely* based on undergraduate transcripts. So all the courses I took in 5 years of grad school, along with my masters degree and my PhD, count for absolutely nothing. LOL! So far, there hasn’t been any 4th or 6th grade material that is beyond my understanding deeply enough to be able to teach it. But VA won’t let me do it as anything but a sub! So, MS & HS English it is! melissa, I love how well rounded you are. How many people with medical degrees can step in and teach English? You are amazing.

Congrats! Very impressive. I’m confident you’ll be at the head of any class, virtual or in person.

I know you have heard this before, “ I’ll be X years old when I get to my goal”, “ How old would you be if you didn’t do it?” I’m sure I mangled the quote, but it’s always stuck out for me. Vital, experienced persons have so much to give. A treasure of resources. I know you will find ways to continue using your gifts for however long it is best for you. ETA: I see moodyblue already said it better. 👍

Congrats! You are very brave and must have a heart of gold to go into teaching now,
I taught before my kids were born. I never planned to go back to teaching, but I did plan on working again. Health issues derailed that for awhile. Now, like you, I find myself in my 50s and in a place where I could work again. Unlike you, I don’t know what I want to do at this point. I have no desire to teach again. BTDT
Best of luck to you!

I went back to school 30 years after I started school (kindergarten). I noticed after I already enrolled that Saturn (The Disciplinarian) was in the same place it was both times. So I wonder if I will be going back to school again at 65 when Saturn comes around again.
Good luck on this new venture.

I just want to say congratulations and good luck to you!
I started my PhD program a few years ago and finally at 47 I finished. It's really hard working full time, having a family, and going back to school.
But you can do it!
How exciting.

Congratulations for pursuing your goal. My best friend is 60 years old and halfway through her history PhD. I've said this here before, her thesis advisor is Heather Cox Richardson. I call it the call toward lifelong learning.

Wishing you the best of luck! I just started my Masters degree program this semester (Masters of Public Health). It's been difficult to navigate the waters again after being out of school for 17 years.
