I don't now if was the level of drama or the writing, but I felt like I had to keep rereading lines of that story trying to keep it all straight. What a mess. At the end, you have just feel heartbroken for all of the kids involved.

Shana Gardner's folks screwed up raising their daughter, now they get another shot at raising more children? That's the way it always goes unfortunately.

So very sad. It's hard to understand the minds of people who do these kinds of things. I think one of their daughters now runs Stampin Up, but I'm not certain.

Boy & girl!! They had twins together. If they were smart, they'd let the stepmother have them then at least they'd be raised with their little sisters.

Honestly, this was inevitable. Me and my BFF (an on-again, off-again SU Demo) talked about this at the time. There was no way she wasn't involved in this. And to have killed Jared in front of the child? SU has a PR nightmare going on right now. If they truly believe she was inocent they would have told her to sit tight and helped her fight in Florida. Instead, they used their money to move her all the way across the country, bought her a home and let her try and hide. I hope Jared's family ends up with that little girl. The little girl that was with him when he was killed is his with his new wife. He had twins with the ex-wife and I would think they would stay with the grandparents. Honestly, it doesn't matter who the child was who was with him. It's still disgusting. And frankly, if I were Jared's parents, I would fight for custody. They are grandparents as well. Just because her parents have money doesn't make them the better choice. They shielded her from the law for over a year on a murder charge.

Wonder if she will fight extradition to Florida? She actually is fighting it, that was just announced a few hours ago. She is now considered a "fugitive of justice" and is in jail without bond until her next hearing. Update here.

I totally missed this story first time around. Heard about it on the dinner thread today. So I went google-hunting and found this link (among many others). (1) I wish I’d saved my old SU catalogs so I could go back and look at the family photos they used to include. (2) I see a Dateline in the future. I read the linked article in Keith Morrison’s voice 😀. But that DM first article was a really sort example of “journalism”. Ugh

The stampin' up people bought their daughter a $1 mil house in the state of Washington under a Stampin Up LLC. Their dad was murdered, then they were taken away from their little sisters, stepmom, friends and school and moved across the country, only to have their world upended AGAIN when their mom was arrested for the murder of their dad. Absolutely tragic story and the biggest losers are his poor sweet children. But I'm glad she was arrested. She's next level evil.

I'm not an attorney, but what is the purpose of fighting the extradition? Inevitably she will end up back in Florida. Why cause a delay? I can't imagine the state of Washington is going to refuse to send her to Florida to face charges.

Is she in jail is Washington now? I read the thread yesterday but I have chemo brain and can’t remember anything. Or maybe to put off the trial and subsequent remanding to state prison.

People fight extradition for a couple of reasons.
Before trial, you are in a county jail. Jails are nicer than state prisons. Every day that a defendant sits in a county jail is one less day that she will spend in a state prison, if convicted.
Delays help the defense. Witnesses get sick or die; police officers retire, evidence gets lost. This is routine stuff. Horrible but reality.
Also, in death penalty cases, you want to delay your trial because it extends the time that you might have until put to death.

State prisons are generally nicer, better funded and have programming. County jails have little oversight, have very little of any programming and are often under funded, under staffed and over crowded. Otherwise, yes defendants usually benefit the pinger a case stretches out. Memories aren’t as good, people move on and are hard to track down. More opportunities for mistakes that benefit the defendant.

To be fair, I didn't go to the women's prison near Tallahassee, so I can't compare it. There's also a big difference between state run prisons and private prisons.

Defendants where I practice always prefer prison to the local jails. Food is better, there more to do, more programming, more ability to get privileges.

scandal and money can go hand in hand. whether you don't have enough money, have too much money, or want to keep your money or want to take someone else's money, scandal can find it's way into the scene. This is something that truly blows my mind. I do try to understand the perspective of other people's lives. Yet when I see scandals of people scamming others for MILLIONS of dollars, I think really? Did they ever have a point where it was enough. Where they would just stop? Even scamming someone to begin with, I cannot understand.
Or when you see politicians or those that come from wealth, enough is never enough. I am not talking about ALL people. The ones who scheme, lie, and steal to keep up their lifestyles.
"Words cannot accurately express the depth of our sadness. Family is our top priority. We love our daughter and are focused on supporting her and our entire family as we help our grandchildren navigate this difficult and very confusing time. For their sake and all involved, we caution against further speculation and request privacy as the legal process runs its course. In the meantime, we are thankful for the continued support, thoughtfulness and prayers being so generously shared by friends and loved ones." Wow. I'm curious if this is the first statement they have ever released? No sympathy for their former son-in-law? His widow? Their ex son-in-law's child who was a witness to his murder? Even if they 100% don't think that their daughter is involved, they HAVE to know their current SIL is the killer. Ugh. This just feels incredibly gross.

About the jail v prison choice - you all are probably right. I'm guessing all are bad and it varies from place to place. But thanks for correcting me!

My brother, who experience both local and state facilities, said he far preferred local jails over prisons. He felt there was less of a personal risk at the city or county jails.

Newest update on this story: Police body cam footage has been released showing Shanna being arrested at her home in Washington. Article here.Shelli is featured in the video and apparently filed to be a conservator for the twins in May of this year. Sounds like they knew she was going to be arrested soon.

someone posted on FB that they work for the plastic case company Stampin Up uses to store their stamps and that orders from SU are way down since the murder, so much so that the case company had to lay off some employees.

I used to buy new stamps all the time and would sell my old ones. I am not buying one more item from that company and will sell the rest of my stamps, my markers, and my ink.

My heart goes out to both families, particularly Jared’s. I am reserving judgment until the trial, but it is not looking good for Shanna. It was also hard to watch Shelly during the arrest, I won’t lie. It was very emotional.

Shows how long it takes law enforcement to gather evidence. Takes years.
