And physically reading The People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry. I know, I am late to this one. I have only read a few chapters as I just started it Saturday. It's just on the other side of being "just OK" with me at this point. Please tell me it gets better. I really liked this book a lot! Hope you get into it and start liking it too.

I finished Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher. I read it and I still can't tell you what it is about. Ok, not entirely true. A Princess must do 3 impossible tasks to help her sister, the Queen. Involves magic and kingdoms. It was good but I was glad I was done. 3/5 stars. I started listening to The Storyteller by Dave Grohl. It is soooo good. I love the Foo Fighters and listening to Dave tell his own story. I started it on a short 45 minute road trip. Had me laughing to myself in the car. And also tearing up a couple of times. At this point 4/5 stars. And physically reading The People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry. I know, I am late to this one. I have only read a few chapters as I just started it Saturday. It's just on the other side of being "just OK" with me at this point. Please tell me it gets better. I am a slow reader so I can only hop on here every few weeks. But I do swing by and get ideas to add to my every growing list. i though āThe People We Meet on Vacationā was pretty good but not great (similar to āBeach Readā). Iām hoping to read āBook Loversā shortly mainly bc I was told it takes place in Asheville and Iāll be going there shortly. Curious if people thought this book was better than her others?

I'm rereading the " Mistress of the Art of Death" series by Ariana Franklin. It's a good historical fiction mystery series, with one drawback- the author died and the final book ends on a cliffhanger. Have you read her stand-alone book City of Shadows? It's SO GOOD. I haven't read that one, but in looking it up, I discovered that the author's daughter actually published a concluding volume to the series a couple years ago that I hadn't heard about. Unfortunately, it has pretty bad reviews.

I started listening to Remarkably Bright Creatures but the library took it back before I could finish it. I think I know what will happen and am not sure if I want to use an audible credit to finish it. It is several weeks before I could get it back from the library but maybe I will wait and hope I don't forget what was going on.
I'm also reading Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena. It's ok.
We are heading on another road trip tomorrow so I am looking for a good audiobook.

I read The Last Lie Told by Debra Webb which was an Amazon First Read for July. Can I just say I hate it when I'm reading a not-very-good book but I plow through to the end because I'm far enough in that I can get it done and add it to my yearly total, and then I realize it's going to be the first book of a series and the side mystery that I wasn't super interested in but still wanted the answer to, isn't going to be wrapped up because it will be a thru-line in the series, but I'm not interested or impressed enough to pick up any of the forthcoming books? Yeah, that's how it was. Two out of five stars.

I mean, it's just some fun fluff but I laughed and I cried! Lol. I'm easy to please! I also finished Rust and Stardust, an older bestseller. It was just ok for me. 3 stars.

Yeah, that's how it was. Two out of five stars. Not sure how I managed to delete my reply last night, sorry about that! I hate when this happens! I just went through it with The Adulterer's Handbook. I stuck with it because I wanted to know what happened and while it kind of told you, it ended on a cliffhanger and a whole new storyline. The main character is so insufferable I don't know that I can bring myself to continue on with the series (the rest of the characters are awful too. Not in a "love to hate them" kind of way, they're just all awful). It was just one of those books you didn't enjoy reading at all. You push through, waiting for the big reveal so you can be done. I figure I'll just move on reading other stuff and if questions about that story come back in my mind, I'll think about borrowing the second one from one of the library sites then.

I finished Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen. www.goodreads.com/book/show/59314709-counterfeitIt was just okay. I really found most of the characters fairly unlikeable, though it was a fast read. There is a small child that's part of the storyline and I found that piece extremely problematic (and unresolved). Some of the way the author told the story was interesting, but overall it was fairly flat.

I just finished Remarkably Bright Creatures! I have been on the library waitlist for weeks, just got it yesterday. Oh, wow. Best book I've read in a long time. I cried. (It didn't help that there was an underlying reason for the tears, but they needed to come out and if the book helped that along its ok). Great book. Great characters.

I realized I have been doing this thread wrong really... though I suppose you ladies don't really care. LOL. I mean, based on the dates, I think I should have been sharing at least some of the books I noted in the last thread in this one, and the ones I finish between July 3-9 in next Sunday's thread. I want to at least finish Dr Brene Brown's Daring Greatly this week . LolāI tend to share what books Iāve finished and havenāt shared yet and what Iām reading now. A book doesnāt necessarily have to be started and/or finished during the dates of the thread title. Those are just the dates this thread is active to talk about what youāve read, what youāre reading, and what you want to read. My two cents anyway! That being said, I havenāt posted in a while so hereās what Iāve read recently. Recently meaning over the past couple of months I think. Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen. 4/5 stars. No idea why I enjoyed this book so much but the character development is amazing. I guess itās the first of a series (trilogy?) and Iāll likely read at least the next one. The characters are amazing. Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. 3.5/5 stars A quick read about a tough subject. I really felt for the main character. The heavy topic of racism seemed to be dealt with in a realistic way. The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley. 3.5-4/5 stars. Another quick read that kept me interested in twists and turns. Maybe not the most realistic book, but it was enough to keep me interested until the end. Like a Sister by Kelley Garrett. 3.5-4/5 stars. Yet another quick mystery read with lots of twists and turns. Tell Me Everything by Erika Krause. 4/5 stars. This one was a partial memoir, so a little different than the mystery novels I usually read. This one had enough detail and enough history to really relate to the trauma the victims experienced. Anyone who went to college with any type of mens athletic program (especially American football) will probably find this story hits too close to home sometimes. Her passion and determination is impressive. Unguarded by Scottie Pippen with Michael Arkush. 3/5 starsāmainly for the stories of his childhood and the play by plays of the great NBA games of the 90s. They say never meet your heroes. Scottie was my absolute favorite basketball player in the 90s but he sounds bitter in this book. I can still respect the great athlete he was, but thereās now a small blemish. Things We Do In The Dark by Jennifer Hillier. 4/5 stars. This is another quick mystery read but wowā it had me all over the place. The characters were well developed and the interactions and relationships were palpableā both love and hatred. There is talk of child abuse and sexual abuse, so be warned going inā¦it isnāt a typical āwhodunitā mystery. There are a lot of experiences and emotions involved but the author does a good job of explaining the in context of the life lived. (Not sure how else to say that, but you get a full view of the child experience as a child, as an abused child, and as a sexually abused child.). Itās a hard read during certain parts but overall I thought it captured things well without being gratuitous or unnecessarily violent. The abuse history is part of the characters and is done as well as can be done.

I finished 2 thrillers this week. The first was Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier. Here is my review from Goodreads. My toxic reader trait when reading thrillers is that I spend my whole time trying to figure out the ending or the twist but then when I do I get pissed, but that I also get pissed if a twist comes I didnāt anticipate! In this book, I had it figured out pretty early on, but that didnāt make me enjoy the book any less. I was still engaged to see how the main characters were going to figure it out. There were times I wanted to strangle the characters because they were being so stupid, but overall this is a great thriller. 4/5 stars
The second thriller was A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham. He is my Goodreads review. I figured this book out from almost the very beginning, but I was still pretty engaged in the story. I would say it was a solid 4 star read until the last 100 pages or so. The way the ending unfolded just wasnāt good. It felt rushed and silly. The characters actions didnāt make sense. 3.5/5 stars

Three more for me this week, but it was a struggle. I didn't want to pick ANYTHING up. Is it bad that I only read because I needed to keep up with my Goodreads challenge (150 books which equals 2 a week)? The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. 4 stars. I'm sure most here already read this one about a group of women who are part of the Packhorse Library project during the late 1930s. It was a quick and enjoyable enough read. Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty by Lauren Weisberger. 4 stars. This one was pretty slow at the beginning and I didn't care for either main character for the majority of the book. It's about a famous female newscaster whose family is involved in the college admissions scandal. Told mostly from her perspective and that of her stay-at-home mom Type A sister. I had a hard time identifying with either woman as they were so image-conscious. The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. 4 stars. Ironically my daughter picked this one up out of our bookcase and read it while she waited for me to finish Giver of the Stars. We didn't even realize that the topics were the same until she was giving me a synopsis of her thoughts after she finished. I wasn't going to read it yet (as we own it and I had a few more library books), but so many here have liked it and I'm tired of picking up books that are duds and needed something that would be a quick read. For the few that maybe haven't read it, it's also about the Packhorse Library project, but told from the perspective of a woman who was born with a genetic condition that gives her blue skin. Only one more book left from the library so will at least attempt that next "My Year Abroad" by Chang Rae Lee. Ten books are in my library hold queue so hoping a few of those become available soon. There is a sequel to The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek called The Book Woman's Daughter. It just came out in May of this year. I was nervous to read it because I liked the first one so much, but the sequel was excellent. It's one of my favorite reads from this year so far.
