Update posted in the original post. I also babbled on about the type of surgery and possible outcomes.

My sister had 3 of 4 parathyroid glands removed at Mayo. Her's were causing constant kidney stones. I had never heard of them before that.
I hope it all works for him.

Had your sister received any radiation in her neck during her life? And isn’t Mayo the best! My son said a lot of it is exactly as it looked when he was 9 years old and we went there. And yes, kidney stones was one of the things on the list of symptoms from an overactive parathyroid. And forgetfulness, depression, and many other issues including heart disease. All from a tiny bitty gland.

I’ve just read every word of your update too - it was really interesting and informative!
I had 3/4 of my thyroid removed about 20 years ago after it became enlarged and developed a couple of nodules during my pregnancy with yds. Thankfully the biopsy results on the nodules came back benign and the remainder seems to have been functioning well so I haven’t needed medication or any other treatment for it since but I’m still mindful that could change and I’m always alert to the kind of information you’ve shared. 💚
ETA: glad to hear they’re at the closing up stage. Keeping my fingers crossed it’s been a complete success 🤞🤞

They zapped my thyroid 40 years ago. I had a parathyroidectomy in 2013. They had told us that if needed a parathyroid gland could/would be put in the forearm .
Glad everything is going well..

My dad had to have his thyroid removed in the mid 80's. It had fused to something else in his neck - trachea maybe? I was too young at the time to fully understand and remember now. Even then it was considered a routine surgery until they got in there and found how much it had grown. Surgery took several hours longer than they anticipated and by the time the surgeon came to talk to my mom he had blood on his scrubs. He was terrified he had cut dad's vocal cords in the attempt to get the thyroid out. (he did not, dad's voice never changed). The whole thing stayed with my mom until the day she died, setting her up with a tremendous distrust of hospitals, doctors and our whole healthcare system.
I've gone on to know a couple of people who needed to have this done, and who take medication now as an active replacement. I had no idea the thyroid and parathyroid were different.
I'm really glad to hear your DS had a successful surgery and that he feels better even with the side effects from being knocked out. Prayers that this will continue to be a positive recovery for him and that there are remaining glads that will kick in and start working for him.

I’m so happy that a few of you found my description interesting. I hadn’t known about any of this before either. The human body is fascinating to me. It wasn’t until he called to tell me he was going to Mayo for more surgery that I started reading up on it. I am still in shock that his grew from the size of a piece of rice to an egg! No wonder he felt sharper immediately with that thing out of him.
And of course, I feel a bit of guilt for not knowing any of this before. I know, I had no reason to know it, but I just feel bad that he has spent all these years with an improperly functioning parathyroid gland and having to deal with all the symptoms without knowing why. If his doctors had mentioned it was even a possibility that this could have happened, I would have researched what to watch out for but I had no clue. And I don’t think even the doctors were aware of it back then.
I was warned that the high doses of radiation he received could render him sterile. I had to sign a paper that they informed me and I was consenting to the treatment anyway. Like that was going to make me change my mind about his having the treatment. No treatment would have meant he would have died and I wouldn’t have grandchildren anyway. And the funny thing is he and his fiancé don’t want kids. I did tell my son about the possibility when he was 18 and had his first serious girlfriend. I felt he should know. And maybe knowing that it might not happen made him just not want any. I’m just happy that he is with a woman who feels the same way. She has no desire to have any children. Perfect match for him!

I'm glad your son's surgery went well. It's a disease that few people know about -- even some doctors, apparently.
I traveled from NJ to AZ for my parathyroid surgery in April. My surgeon is one of the best in the country - all she does is parathyroid surgeries. She removed two adenomas as well as a thyroid nodule. So many doctors I saw have no idea how to treat hyperparathyroidism. They all said wait and see. The problem with that though is that the only cure is surgery and the longer you wait, the crappier you feel! I had to do all my own research and learned quite a bit in the process. I'm so glad I did it.
I hope your son's recovery is easy and swift!
Eta: you mentioned his calcium level was 300. Could that have been his PTH level? High Calcium levels are in the 10.2 - 12 ish range.

I’m a little confused. Did you have an issue with your thyroid, your parathyroid, or both? And yes, it was his PTH level. Thank you for pointing that out. I guess I was just so excited to have him out of surgery that my brain jumped from testing his blood for the PTH that regulates the calcium to just typing calcium.

Just read the final post about the surgery. I hope his healing goes well and they get the needed adjustments without a lot of trouble. It sounds like they will. My son said the surgeon was very happy about it all when he came in to see him in recovery. A happy surgeon has to mean great news, right? And if his levels drop signifying that he has no functioning parathyroid, he can have one of mine. Well that is if an old lady parathyroid is still adequate.
