I am a Polio survivor and in case anyone should think it isn`t much to worry about then look up what can happen to Polio patients years later. Going through the Menopause and had some symptoms which couldn`t be easily explained. Then was eventually diagnosed with PPS. Post Polio Syndrome. I was vaccinated as a child but days to late it seems. The Docs were more concerned with the Scoliosis I was born with. PPS the bloody icing on the cake for me. www.nhs.uk/conditions/post-polio-syndrome/#:~:text=Post%2Dpolio%20syndrome%20(PPS),even%20realising%20they%20were%20infected.

My thought in general was that we could protect our kids... I would think that people could still get the vaccines if they want, but if they aren’t mandatory many people will not get them, either because they don’t believe in them or because they are complacent in getting them. If that happens, diseases that have been very rare here would make a comeback. I’m not a virologist but wonder if they could also mutate and be a risk to those of us who are vaccinated?

I really didn`t want my post to come over as moaning about my own situation. I just don`t want people to go through crap when it is preventable. Read about what happened in the USA when children died or were maimed in the 50s and then tell me you don`t want the vaccine for your own children. This applies to other vaccines too.

Excerpt from a Scientific American article on smallpox vaccine effectiveness:
Vaccination 40 years ago, even if not currently protective against smallpox disease, may offer some protection against a fatal outcome. A study of smallpox cases imported into nonendemic countries found that mortality was 52 percent among the unvaccinated, 11 percent among those vaccinated more than 20 years earlier and 1.4 percent of those vaccinated within 10 years. Therefore, vaccination 40 years ago most likely does not confer protection against smallpox infection, but it may help to prevent a fatal outcome. Should you be exposed to smallpox in the future, you should definitely be revaccinated because vaccination after exposure to an infected smallpox patient, even four days later, can prevent smallpox disease.

Re:smallpox, that is why they are trying to get people vaccinated for the monkeypox. It is a smallpox/monkeypox vaccine.
*** Guess I am way past the 40 year smallpox vaccine...

Which means exactly what you stated…that is one vaccine that will always be available because male politicians always protect males. I remember my mom and aunt talking about a couple of boys/men that that happened to back in the 50s. They said “the mumps went down on them”.

Hopefully *if* it is a weakened strain they won’t suffer the horrific paralyzing and/or deadly side effects of polio?
Yeah, unless you have a medical reason why you can’t get the vaccine, I’m another person on the play stupud games win stupid prizes bench.
And as for GA - 🤬🤬😱 what about the medically fragile people who count in herd immunity? Just another case of fuck you too bad?
I just can’t anymore
I hope my kids do move to another country this one is on its way to being a 3rd world country with failing infrastructure, preventable health issues & a totalitarian govt .
I don’t even recognize US anymore

so... all those anti-vaxxers who wouldn't listen at the start of COVID when everyone said 'don't you remember what polio did?' are gonna find out first-hand, now, huh? But but, the vaccine will give them Autism!

Having lived through the Polio Panic of the 50's, I have no tolerance for people who refuse to have their children vaccinated. We were one of the first to receive the Salk Vaccine of killed virus. My younger sister has permanent spine damage (which hasn't caused her too much trouble) from a very light case. Her Dr. thinks it was from either contracting a case before the vaccine took hold or that those early vaccines had killed virus that wasn't killed enough.
I taught school in the 60's with a woman who was left very crippled from polio before the vaccine was available. I know that my terrible claustrophobia is a result of watching the news each night of children in iron lungs. That was my biggest fear. I used to cry for those children who lived in those horrid iron lungs in order to live at all. MRI's put me into a total panic attack.

Does the GQP even care if we survive... Their motto seems to be survival of the whitest...... Certainly not survival of the brightest.

My grandfather's aunt was still alive when I was very young and she was in a wheelchair because of polio. She needed an iron lung at one point and was on supplemental oxygen for the rest of her life. She was very old by the time I was born but my only real memories of her are her shrunken body in the wheelchair and that oxygen machine - it was all terrifying to me. I think people really don't have exposure to the ravages of these diseases so they think it's all overblown.

My dad had polio as a child, as did my stepmom's sister and her husband. My dad had a minor limp but aunt and her husband had significantly reduced muscles on one side of their bodies that led to limp and difficulty holding things. I don't know if any of them had to be in the iron lung.

Measles cause numerous major issues.. chicken pox virus causes shingles in later life. Diphtheria is deadly!! Whooping cough, they are vaccinating adults now to protect babies before they can get their vaccines. Welcome to tetanus, deadly.. I was exposed to polio, mumps and measles. I got measles when my son was an infant, but he had to get protection, because I had no immunity so he had none. Dr did a house call, I was close to being hospitalized. He and I had Rubella at the same time when he was two. What about Rubella with all the pregnant women out there... I had chicken pox in 1994/1995. 5th grade. I think the vaccine has just became available?? I was so covered my chicken pox had chicken pox. I missed 2 to 3 weeks of school. Classmates started dropping like flies when I got back. I had been pretty compliant with getting tetanus boosters but forgot when I last had it. I know I did in 2005. I had another booster since then but I can't remember the year. 2012, maybe? I need to get it again but I am accident prone.

This area is full of orthodox jews who don't vaccinate. This is where the covid outbreak started and where they refused to abide by lockdowns, sending their children to gather in summer camps when covid was raging. So am I surprised? Not in the least.

We have to get to a place where religious or political freedom isn’t allowed to endanger public health.
