The dressing up for events thread was interesting to me. I have never been a dress wearer unless “kind of” forced to wear one. I am also pretty limited in what I wear and like and have been that way since I was a kid.
In jr high/high school did you often choose to wear a dress (if you did not have a uniform)?
I did not. I was Levi jeans or corduroys and painter pants. I think there may have been a dickie pants period but it was short lived.
ETA - changed wording because it sounded wonky when rereading it and fixing errors. Sorry.

Not in high school, but in junior high my group of friends would randomly pick a day and declare it dress up day and we’d all wear dresses to school. If we hadn’t done it in a while, some of our teachers would ask us when the next dress up day was scheduled.
My daughter wore a skirt for four years of high school and hasn’t worn one since.

I wore a dress on the second day of 7th grade after several teachers assumed I was a boy because I had short hair... Other than that no.

We weren't allowed to wear pants to school until I was in 8th grade. So once they allowed pants, it was all pants for me. I'm still not into dresses.

High school Class of ‘85. I played jh and hs sports so had to dress up on game days. Depending on the season I would occasionally wear a skirt/dress but it was more often dress pants. As an adult I love dresses, and wear them to work all summer.

No. I was a jeans and tee shirt or jeans and sweater or shirts and tee shirt kind of teen.
My dd however prefers dresses and skirts. And has been that way since 7th grade.

I did. Mostly skirts. I had 3 demin skirts of various lengths I liked to wear and also a few casual dresses. This was the late 80s.

Jeans or slacks were not allowed when I was in HS, unless the temperature was below 34. Because I Lived on the Gulf Coast, it was not often that we were allowed to do so.

Twelve years of Catholic school (sixteen if you count college) and of course we wore uniforms.
Whenever we had that rare day we were allowed to be out of uniform almost all of the girls would wear nice dresses. .
My sister and I also had to dress up for Mass each week. I can distinctly remember being 12 years old and my mom was out of town and my Dad allowed us to wear blue jeans to Saturday night Mass.
In college most all of the girls dressed nicely for class sweats just weren't worn to classes unless it was a P.E. class and then we changed into nice clothes right after.

I'm old enough that pants weren't allowed until later in high school - and even then the tops had to be below your hips. Considering this was the mini skirt era, it was about like wearing a dress over your pants. So yes, we wore dresses (and skirts) to middle and high school.

I’m old and the dress code was a lot different back then. No pants, slacks or jeans at any time for any reason. Our skirts had to touch the floor when we kneeled. This was a public school system. We could wear pants in the winter only if we walked to school, but had to change to a skirt. I waited for a bus and in the winter at 6:30 in the morning it could be so cold. I don’t even want to talk about when there was several feet of snow on the ground.
I’ll never forget when one of my friends got sent home from school for wearing a skort. She had to go home and change. It should be noted that she graduated in the top 10 in our class of over 460 students. She went on the study at universities in the US, Madrid and Hamburg and was a graduate of the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
I am retired now, but when I worked I never wore pants to the office at any job I had. I had a closet full of business suits with the occasional dress. Now I don’t even think I own a dress. I certainly haven’t worn one or high heels in years.

The only dress I remember wearing in high school (at school) was this sort of shapeless, jumper style dress. It was khaki and I would wear it with a blue shirt underneath. I’m sure I looked like a member of a polygamous cult. It was in style in Oklahoma, but when we moved to South Carolina it was clear they weren’t wearing the prairie-style clothing. They dressed more like Melanie Griffith in “Working Girl” if they were dressing up. I remember wondering why everyone looked like 30 y/o office professionals.

No I’d say those were the “anti-dress” years. But in college I wore a lot of dresses simply bc my sorority (and boyfriend’s fraternity) had a lot of formals and “wine and cheese” date nights (no joke lol)

graduated in 72
we were only allowed to start wearing pants in JH and the had to be a pantsuit, not even nice pants and sweater. That changed by HS.

I wore uniforms from 1st through 7th grade. In the younger grades we had to wear a stupid, UGLY plaid skirted jumper. I think in maybe 2nd or 3rd grade they changed it so girls could either wear pants made of the uniform plaid fabric or navy blue corduroy pants. Yes, I was that girl wearing navy corduroys even when it was 85° in late May, ugh. I *HATED* wearing dresses then, and still do now. I also vividly remember one Easter when my mom wanted to buy me a dress to wear for church and I flat out refused. She ended up buying me an outfit that was light blue pants with a matching shirt and I even hated that, LOL. I looked surly in all of the photos she took. In 8th grade I transferred to public junior high (for only one year, because the next year they switched up all the grades and I went to high school). I remember going “school shopping” with my mom for the first time ever, and I remember her buying me dressier blouses and a plaid shirt with the little ribbon tie at the collar. It was ‘80-‘81 after all, LOL. No skirts though. That was the year I was confirmed and we had the same shopping battle because she wanted me to wear a dress for that and I was all HELL TO THE NO! She partly won that battle because I ended up wearing one of those red and black plaid kilt looking skirts with the big pin in the front. I never wore it again after that. In high school, I wore polo shirts with the collars popped, crew neck sweaters with a little embroidered logos on the chest (Izod was popular, so was Ralph Lauren) and Guess? jeans with the zippers at the ankles were all the rage. They were expensive though and I only had 2-3 pairs. I literally wore them out. Vans, Nikes and Keds were the tennis shoes of choice but I also recall wearing penny loafers a lot.

As others have said, we could only wear dresses or skirts when I was in high school. Even in college, only dresses and skirts ~ even on dates! BUT if you were going bowling you could wear slacks so there were a LOT of girls signing out to go bowling. I laugh at what the girls wear to college football games now. I usually wore a skirt with a blazer. But I never wore high heels like some girls did. I wore loafers. ETA: I started working in the Trust Department of a bank in 1970 so only dresses/suits were allowed. Finally they changed the dress code so that we could wear pants but it had to be a nice pants suit, not separates.

I didn't wear dresses often (I don't remember any, but it was a long time ago). but I wore miniskirts A LOT. They were usually shorter than the dress code required, but I never got caught lol A few times, I wiggled them down far enough to seem like they were long enough, if the principal was nearby lol It was the late '80s as stupidly oversized sweaters + very short skirts was a popular look. I'm tall with long legs so it capitalized on my best assets

I think it was around the 6th grade when we were allowed to wear pants to school. That was my turning point. Lol! No more wearing shorts under my dresses. My mom was sad because I no longer wore the cute dresses she liked to buy me. 😂 I would maybe wear a dress to school once in a blue moon. But it was mainly blue jeans. Oh yeah, I did wear a few mini skirts to school.
When I see the high schoolers today walking to school in shorts, I feel old. We never wore shorts to school, unless we were going to gym class.

I went to high school 1980-1984. I was definitely a new wave / punk girl. I got all of my fashion tips from MTV. So dresses were definitely in my rotation. As were high heel pumps (does anyone wear pumps anymore?), fish net stockings, and safety pin / razor blade earrings. Madonna and Cyndi Lauper gave me too many fashion ideas. Limited Express was my first choice for clothing. Now their clothing is really main stream but in the early 80s it was pretty edgy. I think I was a six 4 or something like that, and and 105 pounds (5'7"). I have a big head so I basically looked like a lollypop. Fun dresses were really easy to find. I wish I was thin (but not that thin) now- I'd wear a lot of dresses now if it wasn't so hard to find flattering ones in my size.

I wore school uniform every day from the age of 5 to 18. All state schools in Scotland have a mandatory uniform, even nowadays. It always makes me smile to see the high school girls who walk past my door everyday with their skirts hiked up as far as possible. They probably wouldn’t believe we all did the same thing forty-odd years ago!

I dressed up in beautiful clothes every day. Complete with matching purse and heels. I wanted to go to law school, so everyone called me Elle Woods. Teachers would come find me every day to see what I was wearing.
One teacher called me “Myshelly and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Wardrobe.” She wrote that in my yearbook.
I was voted Best Dressed.

I mostly wore dresses or skirts in high school - I had a few pairs of trousers but no dungarees (jeans) except for camping. My mum was on the older, more conservative side so while the school didn't really have many rules, she had plenty. My 8th grade back to school outfit was a purple corduroy Oshkosh jumper with a white oxford shirt - not very fashionable at all.

I was private kindergarten with no uniform so I probably wore dresses with shorts under often.
Grades 1-4 (early 80's) I wore a catholic school uniform of a hideous blue and white plaid jumper or pants from the same fabric with peter pan collar white button up shirts and knee socks in white or blue and lace up black or brown shoes.
Grade 5-12 I was in public school. No uniform. I wore whatever the hell I wanted. Jeans, overalls, shorts, tee shirts, sweatshirts, whatever. It was AWESOME! No dresses or skirts unless I was going to a formal dance. Shoes were birks or doc martens or converse or keds.
Now, as a teacher- I wear whatever the hell I want as well... jeans, leggings, shorts, tee shirts, tank tops, hoodies, sandals, boots, tennis shoes... I think I might be stuck in HS. (I teach HS- LOL)

I'm old enough that back when I first started at the high school -- which was grades 7-12 back then, yes all at one school -- girls were required to wear dresses. This was a public school but that's just the way it was. However, that was changed when I was in 8th grade and I never looked back. That year the school admins said it was up to each teacher, so all of my teachers except one (the old witch who taught us sewing) said right away that pants were fine. So for the sewing teacher we all kept a skirt in our lockers that we'd change into quickly before class. You can imagine how we all looked wearing these wrinkled skirts that had been stuffed into our lockers. haha After that year individual teachers couldn't require it. I never wore a skirt or dress to school, ever. Even our choir teacher was enlightened enough to say that since the boys were allowed to have pants showing at the bottom of their robes the girls should have the same rules and not be required to wear a dress. Black pants only though, for both boys and girls. I'm quite sure I never wore a dress or skirt in college either.

Compulsory uniforms here, so I had no choice but to wear a dress. On the rare days when we were allowed to wear "free dress" I would usually wear jeans, but a skirt / dress if it was summer. We were allowed to wear what we wanted in Year 12 (1985). In my Year 12 phots I was wearing a pink skirt and top, and Linda R was wearing the exact same outfit but in apricot.

They probably wouldn’t believe we all did the same thing forty-odd years ago! Yep! My mum refused to take the hem of my summer uniform dress up, so I would tuck the dress up under my bra, then put my jumper (sweater) on over my dress. Instant short tarty dress! At my daughter's private school, the rules were a LOT stricter, and the dresses had to reach the knee.

Jr High was when we were first allowed to wear pants. No blue jeans, but any other color was acceptable. By high school we could wear blue jeans too. I graduated in the mid-seventies so I lived in peasant and embroidered shirts with little mirror inserts, bell bottom low cut jeans and earth shoes. Grew up in South Florida, no AC in the schools but we could never wear shorts. Now the schools have AC and the kids can wear shorts.

Class of 82. In grade school we had to wear dresses. They had to come down to where your fingertips hit your leg. I was short, but with long arms and my dresses were longer than most. In jr and sr high I could wear what I wanted, I pretty much only wore jeans, t-shirts and sneakers, mostly Vans. As an adult, that is still more or less how I dress, except in summer when I swap in skirts for the jeans, or simply wear casual dresses, still mostly wear sneakers.

I had to wear dresses 2 times a week for elementary school. By junior high and high school, my mom made me awesome clothes that were a good year ahead of their time. At the time I didn't think they were so awesome though. I dressed up teaching and thought teachers should wear dresses/skirts several times a week. Not always practical when you live in Colorado in the winter. I got voted best dressed and then one year decided that it was all kind of silly and began dressing warmer and let my freak flag fly with my fun socks.

When I was in High School (80's). I wore mostly Jeans and stirrup pants. Occasionally a skirt with tights. t-shirts, sweaters with shoulder pads, over sized t-shirt with the side knot or clip thingy, or ruffled blouses. Over sized longer blazer with enormous shoulder pads.
