I'm reading The Orphan Master's Son. I'm enjoying it a lot, but it is not at all what I was expecting.

I want to read this book, but I need to know if it has upsetting thing about elephants and how they are treated in it? I'm pretty sensitive about cruelty to animals and some of what is done to elephants is horrific. Does this go into any bad stuff, or only their natural 'in the wild' lives? I haven't finished yet. So far it's mostly about elephant memories, bonding, how they relate to each other. It talks about poor enclosures, but the scientists are not cruel. I'll let you know when I'm done

I finally finished Empty Mansions by Bill Ordman and Paul Clark Newell. The story of heiress Hueghette Clark and her multiple furnished homes that sat empty for more than 20+ years. I started to read this in October and had to return it, by then some one else had it reserved and I just now got it back. The second half went much faster though, I was through that in about 24 hours. This is just a fascinating story, and I've been intrigued since reading about it on MSNBC years ago. It also strikes me as very sad, she had ALL this money and THINGS, but didn't do much at all to ensure that the $ would continue (for lack of a better word - it was not invested) and did very little charitable giving to organizations that really could have used the money. Most of her charitable giving was to about a dozen individuals. It was her money, and she supposedly spent it how she wished, but it just seems such a shame. I also read The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron. 2007 Newberry Medal winner. I'm trying to make my way through the entire list. And lastly Haunted by Kay Hooper. The latest story in her Bishop/SCU series. Paranormal mystery. She is always on my auto-read list...she just writes a good entertaining story that draws me in and keeps me guessing till the end. This one was a little strange though, she does the typical boy/girl meet fall in love/romance bit along with the mystery angle, and each story has a new "relationship" that comes out of it. She does write a series, so we see many of the characters again in other stories. But this one didn't follow the typical pattern. There was a boy and girl set-up, but they didn't hook up. Two of the other semi-main characters who we've seen in several other books did hook-up (somewhat - and more "physically then anything) and are now together. So I'm interested to read the next book in series to see how she continues this.

I'm still reading "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" by Diana Gabaldon which is book 6 in the Outlander series. I'm in the middle of it and am enjoying it immensely. It is much better than book 5 "The Fiery Cross" which seemed a bit slow at times. I haven't checked, but like most of her books I think it's about 800 pages. I don't mind, I love that it's big and thick and lasts a long time. I only have two more to go until I get to the end of the series, and the show on Starz doesn't start up again until April. So, I'm kind of pacing myself. Plus I only read in bed at night before I go to sleep. I love these books! The writing style is incredible in detail-I can see in my head exactly what she is saying-to me that is the mark of a gifted writer. I wish there were 20 of these books! But at least there are 8, and I'm the kind of reader who rereads books all of the time. These are so detailed, intense and complex that they lend themselves well to that. Debbie in MD.
