Looking for cmas presents for my Dad. Every yr the Ps have great suggestions.
So this yr, the best book I probably read was The Shoemakers wife by Adriana Tigiani.

House in the Sky
A book about a woman who was captured and her ordeal. Real life and heart breaking story but so good!

I really liked "This is Where I Leave You" - funny story about a dysfunctional family in the aftermath of a death.

Not a Dad book at all, but I really liked Garden Spells and Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen.

"All the Light We Cannot See" is the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, my dad might like it!

For your dad I would recommend 11/22/63 if he hasn't read it yet, my husband loved it. He also loved Lone Survivor, No Easy Day, and Unbroken
I realize none of these came out this year, just some ideas.

The Martian , I sent this to my uncle. It has been optioned for a movie and Matt Damon will be the starring role. Not my typical style of book but loved it. A great story .
I sent my aunt, The Invention of Wings.
Every year I try to gift my favorite reads for the year. These were 2 of my 42 reads, for the year.

My husband read it, too, just burned right through it.

I loves All the Light We Can Not See and Station Eleven. Also, Redeployment (it won the National Book Award too.)

Not for a dad at all, but my favorite book for the year was Diane Keaton's new autobiography. Can't figure out why it sticks in my head, but it did. Weird, I know.

I will second 11/22/63. I thought it was great. Mr Mercedes and Revival were good as well, though the end of Revival was disturbing to me.
Reconstructing Amelia was really good, but not really Dad material.
I am currently reading Couldn't Keep it to Myself. It's actually short stories written by women in prison that Wally Lamb was giving writing classes to. It is really very good, and some of the stories are quite heartbreaking. The stories are mostly about the women's lives before they went to prison {I think the prison didn't want them writing stories about life in their facility}. I found it while trying to decide if I wanted to buy Orange is the New Black (LOVE the show) and saw it mentioned again and again in the reader reviews of OITNB as a better read. ETA: Unbroken for sure if he hasn't read it yet!!

The Martian Station Eleven All the Light We Cannot See The Invention of Wings Life after Life One Summer: America 1927 Sundance The End of the World Running Club
If I had to pick a book for my dad, I'd choose One Summer: America 1927. Bill Bryson is always an entertaining writer.

That's tough, as I read a lot of great books in 2014. I guess if I have to choose one for my top honors, I'll go with "The Good Luck of Right Now" by Matthew Quick.
It was quirky, unique, funny, and truly touching.

All the Light We Cannot See was my favorite book of the year.
However, I think Unbroken might even be better for a dad.

For my dad, I plan to buy THE BOYS IN THE BOAT. One of my friends recommended it and she has great taste in books. UNBROKEN is another, but it's been out so long, he may have already read it. I just read Grisham's SYCAMORE ROW and it was good. He also has a new book out called GRAY MOUNTAIN. Another book he might enjoy is DOC by Mary Doria Russell. This is a western and a fictional story based on Doc Halliday and I really enjoyed it. www.goodreads.com/book/show/8911226-doc?from_search=true

How recent? I'm a slow reader (by pea standards). I pick books randomly from my state's online lending system. Books that may hold an interest for your dad:
-Abandon by Blake Crouch (pub. 2009), about a Ghost Town
-Bent Road by Lori Roy (pub. 2011), mystery about 2 murders that happen 20 years apart in a small town
-Nemesis by Phillip Roth (pub. 2009) about Polio during WWII, set in upstate NY
-Ghostman by Roger Hobbs (pub.2014), about a "clean up man", the guy who makes sure things are taken care of after a robbery. This one involves a casino heist gone wrong

Not a Dad book at all, but I really liked Garden Spells and Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. I have loved all of Sarah Addison Allen's books. I just pre-ordered her next book First Frost. I just finished reading Above by Isla Morley and was thinking my DH might like it. He just finished 11/22/63: A Novel by Stephen King (it wasn't scary) and really liked it.
