I like picking up things when traveling that serve as pleasant reminders of the trip. I bought a tablecloth on one of my trips to Africa, wine glasses in France, a watch in Switzerland, coffee in Venezuela, a Larimar pendant in the Dominican Republic, and other items like that... all things that I use and enjoy. I have also bought similar items as gifts for others.

Hopefully you had fun on you cruise.
When my mom and grandma was alive I would get them something. Usually a spoon for grandma and a set of salt and pepper shakers for my mom.... But they collected them so it was a given.... I never did go out of my way to find them but if i saw them some where I wold get them... the thing I like getting from every place I go is post cards but they are more for me... I have a collection.... I want to do a scrapbook with them.....

Only if I see something that I think someone will appreciate as a gift. I do a fair amount of birthday and Christmas shopping while on vacation.

No, the only exception us if someone is pet sitting for us and even then I may just buy them dinner when I get back. Last time I think I bought something for someone that requested something was hickory nuts from China, but she gave dh money and told him where to get them and for some reason you cannot get them here even via internet. They were amazingly delicious so I bought a bag for each friend but a bag was about a dollar. On our honeymoon we had a goal of no souvenirs but I did buy a soccer style jacket when I found it at a great deal and I thought it was cute. Personally I hate dealing with crap like some tchotskie from someone's trip to a place I've never been, I have this dolphin figurine from a friend from college, I haven't tossed it because it was a gift so it lives in a box in my parents' basement. Every time I look at it I think about throwing it away but never can seem to do it!

Typically if the kids don't go, I would buy them something... otherwise the only thing I buy my friends is we kinda have this 'tacky' gift giving thing go on. Once I got my friend a GIANT Texas coffee cup that says "Don't Mess with Texas"... stuff like that we exchange, just for fun. Another gal at work collects shot glasses so everyone in the office buys her one when they go somewhere.. She does have a pretty impressive collection now from around the world. Otherwise that is it.

I forgot to say, one of my old bosses loved to travel and he would always bring me back a Christmas ornament from that country... I have about 5 or 6 of them from all over the world. I absolutely love those and they are not cheesy. A four leaf clover from Ireland, a Dutch blue little doll, a old-fashion painted glass parrot from one of the Caribbean islands, a wooden (the wood is special from this area) carved nativity scene from Bethlehem and a few others.

I did when my niece and nephew were little. But not anyone else. Well except for DH. He got a Tokyo Giants ball cap and a few Hard Rock cafe T-shirts. But no one else. In fact DH and I rarely bring home souvenirs for ourselves. On our last Alaksa trip, we did buy a watercolor from a Skagway artist and a small native Alaskan carved totem pole. But it's rare we bring home stuff.
Our usual travel friends always buy trinkets to take back to family members and friends. It baffles them that we don't.

I only purchase items that I could give as either a birthday or Christmas gift. I will admit to stocking up on chocolate in Switzerland and buying Merano glass jewellery in Italy. In Cuba I purchased cigars (small ones) and honey & coffee. In Iceland I purchased some wool but this is for a gift for Christmas. I did buy glass ornaments in Germany, at the factory where they were made.
None of the junky kind of stuff.

Yes. I find things along my journeys that I know certain people in my life would like. Again, only on peas do I hear that people hate souvenirs. We seriously have a lot of hate here for innocent stuff.
I also send a ton of postcards to people. Because it's fun. I got a smackdown from one super grumpy friend who was horrified at the concept of sending postcards. I was not happy with him for his assholian response and his assholian contempt for sending or receiving postcards. I keep sending them to him just to piss him off now. Grrrr.

My husband insists that It would be rude to come home empty handed. Otherwise, I would not.

When we went to The Bahamas, we bought each set of parents an angel Christmas ornament made out of a conch shell. They are gorgeous; I wish I had bought one for me! When we go on our trip this week, I'm sure we'll bring the kids back something.

I was not happy with him for his assholian response and his assholian contempt for sending or receiving postcards. I keep sending them to him just to piss him off now. Grrrr. I was going to say the same thing LOL. Half of my fun on a vacation is strolling the markets and shopping. I know that there are a lot of places I've been that my parents and grandparents can't go, and it means a lot to them to have a memento from that place. I usually have a pretty good sized shopping list when I travel, my three grandmothers, my parents, my brother and sister-in-law, my four nieces and nephews, my best friend and my coworkers. My parents are usually easy, they like sweatshirts and t-shirts. Occasionally I'll see something that my dad would like different like a hand painted canvas from Paris that was still wet when I bought it. The kids it just depends on what I find, but they all have a shelf of items from me from my travels in their rooms. My grandmothers is usually some kind of fabric piece, my best friend well he usually gets something really unique and personal (I tend to spoil him). For my coworkers I have made that a challenge. I try to find something unique and spend no more than $1.50. They came to look forward to what I was going to bring back, and everyone had a little collection on their desks. For myself, I have a few things that I typically look for. I collect walking sticks and try to find one everywhere I travel. I also collect decorative boxes, trunks. I have a stack of them in my bedroom. I usually get a Christmas ornament for the tree, plus if there is something that is unique to the location I am going, I will get that. For instance on a trip to Singapore, I went to Arab street which is a garment district type location there and I bought this gorgeous fabric that a coworker turned into curtains for me. I bought tablecloths in St Martin. The most fun I had was during a stop in Grand Cayman, I sent everyone I knew, postcards from Hell.

I picked up some fun stuff like cute little stuffed lambs wearing tartan hats in Scotland for my sis and bff because they were checking in on my cats while I was away, but otherwise no. Unless I'm traveling with the girls, then, I'll get a tee shirt or something for dh

not usually except for my mum who is disappointed if we don't send her a magnet for her collection. I do send postcards and I keep my eye out for gifts that might be available there and not here.

I don't like to buy the typical mass produced imported souvenir crap that is often sold in a lot of touristy locations. I will on occasion purchase momentos that are handcrafted or unique to the location. We like to look for and purchase Christmas ornaments from places we travel to as a family.
