I have created the Cricut elective (12 projects- stickers, shirts, ornaments with alcohol ink and vinyl, wood burning, glass etching) and the multimedia elective (public service announcement video and sell your school advertising video) and am working on creating a 3D printing elective to be offered at some point in the future. My students have had to do online electives and that just sucks. So, my principal asked me to come up with some in person electives. It’s been an adventure! Those electives sound so fun! I'm really enjoying the cricut one. I've done a similar 3D printing one but never done the multimedia.

We have been back for two weeks now, but its been a mad dash to open our musical. We opened on Friday (my birthday) and had a fabulous weekend - not perfect but we do educational theatre so it never is. But we are utterly exhausted. Taking today off to do nothing and then back at it tomorrow. Classes are going better and my discipline issues that popped up between Thanksgiving and Winter break seemed to have righted themselves again. Spring is super busy for us with preparing performances and getting ready for summer camps and contest so it tends to go by fast. Feels like we are finally getting our groove back and I'm enjoying teaching again. I don't think there's any tired like musical tired. Congrats on a successful show, and happy birthday! (What did you do? We're putting up Anastasia this April and auditions are this week!) Thank you! Anastasia is beautiful. We did a new musical called Ladyship. It was part of the NYMF in 2019 and I ran across the music online. After we listed to it, we just new it would be perfect for our kids so we reached out to the playwrights. They worked with us to adapt for high school and even came to opening night. It is about women convicted of petty crimes shipped from England to Australia in the late 1700s to serve their sentences. It focuses though on all they endured and their resilience. The musical is based on true stories and the human trafficking element really touched our students. ladyship.twigs.com/home

The end of the first semester is Friday. I will be standing on top of the hill and starting my decline into my last year of teaching. On Friday I booked a flight in May to meet my first grandchild. I will use all four of my personal business days when I go. Figuring out a way to book a flight to include a weekend to extend our visit and not have the flight cost a ridiculous amount of money really reminded me why I am sick of living on a school schedule. A school schedule can be great but it is very rigid while you are working it. I have my resignation letter written and plan to turn it in next month. It feels weird that fairly soon I am not going to have to worry about multiplication facts, quadrilaterals, and 10 year olds screwing around in the bathroom. I am not unhappy at work, but I just don’t want to do this anymore. A couple of my long time coworkers are retiring too and we’re all very happy about it. Congratulations! I waited until the last day possible to turn in my letter. I called my teammates the night before to tell them and they were shocked. They were my very good friends, but I felt it was time. I could have stayed longer, but like you, it was time. My mom died at 58 and her mom 63. I didn't want to be working so hard up until I died. I totally get the school schedule. Yes, you do get a lot of time off (all unpaid), but getting a sub is so hard and writing plans only to have a slim chance of getting someone to actually follow them is dishearttening. I hope you enjoy meeting that new baby! And aren't you the one getting a new pup soon? All three of us who are retiring have been pretty open about it. This is my 34th year of teaching and the other two are over 30 years into it too. They'll have plenty of time to find replacements for us and this is good for our newer employees too as they move up the seniority list. I am getting a corgi puppy at the end of the month. This fall the corgi in my profile picture had a very quick decline from Degenerative Myelopathy. We were heartbroken. As time went on we started talking more and more about getting another dog. We have an 8 year old corgi that has done really well since we lost Daphne. He's a happy, friendly little guy and i think he'll enjoy another dog. The rest of the school year will go by quickly. My daughter in college will have a week long break soon and she'll be back from school about three weeks before we are done, so I feel like it's an ok to add a puppy to the mix. I live and work in the same town so I can come home at lunch time. We are looking forward to the puppy chaos that will come with her.

It was the most horrendous return to school of my life. Our little class of 2nd graders are facing a huge tragic loss. I can’t say much or this will be “searchable,” but send positive thoughts to our little class and one family in particular. I’m so sorry. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your class, and this family.

My male corgi loved his sister for about three days. She was a terror. She's five now and has settled down, but she still likes to be the boss of everyone. My male is losing his hearing and probably eyesight, but he keeps plugging along.

I’m half way thru my new adventure at continuation high school. Still loving my job. First term (6weeks) I taught chemistry semester 1, integrated math semester 1, online elective. Second term (6 weeks) I taught chemistry semester 2, integrated math semester 2, online elective. Third term (6 weeks- just ended 1/13) I taught biology semester 1, Cricut elective, PE/nutrition. Fourth term (6 weeks) starts Tuesday. I will be teaching a combo period of biology semester 2/chemistry semester 2, multimedia film production, integrated math semester 2. There is more joy in teaching elective courses!

Im not a teacher but my daughter is. She teaches high school Spanish and is doing OK but is totally overwhelmed. Being new to teaching, a mom to a 2yr toddler who has upcoming evaluations due to delays, a wife with a house etc in school herself in masters program to BE a teacher and basically just juggling it all. This position came to her a bit unexpected so she's rushing to get everything worked out and degreed/ certified etc on top of everything else(including sassy unwilling teenagers for students) .. shes just overwhelmed They've had 2 other positions in the foreign language department come avaliable during this school year alone. So it's been stressful on them and on the students to say the least. But she's managing. And starting this half of the year with some new rules and new routines that will hopefully help. She loves her job though. usually haha

I took an EA position last school year since I was had been let go at my previous part time job due to Covid and needed something to do. I really didn't think I wanted to be back in the classroom and had let my teaching license expire. Last year I worked as an aide with k-3 working with struggling kids in math, reading, and writing. I had 10-13 groups in 3.5 hours. It was crazy and the groups were changing weekly. This year my principal put me in the Title room and I strictly work with low readers. Having had 30 years of experience with teaching reading, it really didn't make sense not to have me work there. They get the experience of an additional teacher without paying a teacher's wage (and all of the benefits). Not complaining since I get $30 to do something that gets me out of the house, I am good at, and I still get all of the time off that teachers get as well as any days that kids are not there. It is the perfect set up and I am done by 11:45 each day. I love my kids and don't have the stress that classroom teachers have with grades, parents, grading, etc. Since I already get a good pension, this job is really ideal. So I can't complain for a second, but I truly have been there with so many of your complaints. Teaching is hard. Giving your heart and soul every day is hard. It does matter though! My current teammate is one of my old students and she is an amazing, compassionate teacher. She said I was the person who made her want to be a teacher. What a wonderful compliment! That must have felt good!

We returned January 5 and students on the 6th. Then I was sick the 9th-11th. Went back on the 12th and a horrible storm with tornados came through that evening. School was cancelled for the 13th due to no power and trees down in so many areas. Today we are back. I’ve only had students 3 days since Christmas.

I like my coworkers and think I’d be glad to go into my building once a week or so. My husband teaches in a neighboring district. I’d maybe sub at his school. I’d use my sub $ for vacations.

It’s report card week. Writing comments is the such a time sucker particularly when I’m really just documenting and parents don’t care. That explains a lot. My HS daughter unexpectedly failed her 2nd quarter English class, pretty spectacularly after doing fine 1st quarter. We had emailed the teacher asking to talk, and I felt so bad for the teacher because that was his first semester teaching at all and he sounded so nervous at our phone call conference. I think he was afraid we were going to chew him out or something. And while yes, we did want to know why this had happened without us having any clue it was coming, we were not blaming him for it. (It turned out she did not turn in the last two assignments, one of which was a huge one, so it was too late to really give any warning or for her to make it up. Yeah, that's going to lead to a chat here at home...) But he just sounded SO relieved that we were not angry with him, or trying to get the grade changed, and that all we were doing was trying to figure out how to help her succeed. In fact, he sadly pretty much gushed over us giving a hoot. And when we explained that we try to let her handle stuff on her own since she's in HS, we are also still there as her safety net and yeah, parents (!) when she still needs that, he was so happy. So...there really are parents who care. And I bet some of them are rather like us in that we try to take that feedback from the teacher and deal with it between us and the kid, not involving the teacher unless necessary since we know they have enough to do already. But yes, of course there are plenty who won't even read it.

I have a parent who has gotten hostile with me about a 3rd grade recorder concert and is trying to tell me how to do my job. He's on the faculty at Rice in one of the science-y departments. I want to be like, you know these past few years when every idiot on the internet was telling scientists how to do science? And then just stand there and wait until it sinks in.
Also, who gets this agitated about 8 year olds playing Satan's little flute?
