OK, while I wait to hear back from a potential new primary care doctor, I'm trying to be proactive about my skin (42, bad acne, oily skin). I was on the Paula's Choice Web site, looking at reviews of products.
I was always taught that you should use the same brand for everything. Is that still the case? Because on her site, there is no single brand that she rates as best for all my needs (except for Paula's Choice, which I may end up trying, but I don't want to wait for mail order).

I think you need to use the products that work best for you. I think the whole "use the same brand for everything" is a marketing tactic. I don't have the same skin problems as you do. I have dry skin that has a tendency to get a little touch of dermatitis on the forehead. I've found that the Neutrogena Foaming Face Wash works perfectly for me. On the other hand, I use more expensive moisturizer because the drugstore brands I've tried trigger the dermatitis. I don't stick to the same brand all the time either. Sometimes, I'll get a sample of something and like it, so I switch to it for a while.
I'm also a big believer in "less is more" in skin care. I rarely use scrubs, never use serums, and skip the primer. I do use BB instead of primer, with and without foundation. I'm 53 and people tell me that my skin is great. I only have wrinkles when I smile and my skin feels good when I touch it. I will admit that good skin genes helps.
Anyhow, my recommendation is to try to get samples or travel sizes of products that you are interested in trying. Don't invest in full-size product until you know how your skin will react. Also, ask your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist and for some hormonal blood tests. Oily skin and acne aren't really common for people over 40. It happens, but it's uncommon. It would be a good idea to rule out any issues that might be causing it.

I was trying to get into see a derm, but I need a referral from my PCP to do that, and because I hadn't seen my PCP in three years, he dropped me (without any notification). I've sent in the paperwork for another PCP, but I haven't heard anything back from his office yet. I have regular visits with my GYN, and he does bloodwork then.

Not according to my dermatologist. I use several different brands of skincare products, and all of them at my doctor's recommendation.

When I was about 41, I finally went to the dermatologist about my similar skin. Add in that mine is sensitive, too. Between them and my own trial and error, I've finally hit upon a combo that works for me.
I used Epiduo regularly for about a year (now I use it about every other day). It was rough at first, but then my skin adapted and it's super. It's a combo retinol/benzoyl peroxide that's a prescription. Then I use the CeraVe cleanser for oily skin, and only when I need it, a light moisturizer. I've found that for me, simple is best. I don't use sunscreen after long discussions with the dermatologist - I am rarely out in the sun except for driving, it irritates my skin, and we decided that the risk was minimal. (I do use it if I'm going to be in the sun, just not on a daily basis.)

I've used her products in the past and liked it. If you're exploring a new brand, buy a kit, then you're getting smaller sized bottles but a whole system for the price of one large bottle. I've also used Murad and liked that.
After your last thread I went on sephora.com and bought a Ole Henriksen kit and after a week am loving it.

My dermatologist highly recommends the Cerave products. You can get them at any drugstore, walmart, etc. good luck!
