this earthquake was about the size of the great quake of san francisco, 1906. historians local geologists are saying that they expect a quake of this size in southern ca --though with the stronger building codes, the result will be different but still horrible.

15,000 deaths is staggering. i am so sad for the families who lost loved ones. i even saw a video of a dog desperately digging through the rubble for her puppies. a bystander helped dig to get a couple out for her. just tragedies across the board.

It's been horrifying to see the impact of this earthquake, the numbers of deaths, the injuries, the destruction, all so awful. I think in the months to come, the building construction amnesties given will come under a lot of scrutiny. BBC In Turkey, however, the government has provided periodic "construction amnesties" - effectively legal exemptions for the payment of a fee, for structures built without the required safety certificates. These have been passed since the 1960s (with the latest in 2018). Critics have long warned that such amnesties risk catastrophe in the event of a major earthquake. Up to 75,000 buildings across the affected earthquake zone in southern Turkey have been given construction amnesties, according to Pelin Pınar Giritlioğlu, Istanbul head of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects' Chamber of City Planners. Just a few days before the latest disaster, Turkish media reported that a new draft law is awaiting parliamentary approval which would grant a further amnesty for recent construction work. www.bbc.co.uk/news/64568826

The horrific death toll is over 33,000 now 😞 And there’s been over a dozen arrests connected to unsafe construction.

the type of construction.. non bendable concrete construction is very common in california and other places. a few towns like los angeles has mandated retrofit in next 20 yrs (too slow!). but san francisco has not.
san francisco has 90% reinforced first story garages on small apartment buildings.
so this should be a major wake up call.. it is not just in "not the wealthiest countries" problem. I live a redwood framed home that will bend, possibly get damaged, but not as likely to kill.
why government regulations are important and "being free" is not an argument against building codes.

ntsf unfortunately the major areas of earthquakes happening in the USA are centered on the west coast(CA), so of course the GOP does not seem to care. Remember the legislators (TX plus) who voted against and wanted to deny Sandy aid from going to our east coast states, particularly NJ/NY..
