I know I’m out of the loop and I’m old so take that into account. My granddaughter babysat one child for 8 hrs and mom paid her $600. I was shocked. My DGD works in a small boutique in a high end hotel at the beach town where she lives in FL. Mom is an actress/model from New York. She comes to this hotel frequently. DGD met this woman when woman came into boutique. Woman wants to use DGD again when she comes back.

1.00/hour.. that was my going rate when I was a teen. 1 kid or 6. LOL
My DD babysits and gets about $150 a day. I think she is probably less than most.

My DD babysits in the town where she goes to college in Florida and makes $18 to $20 an hour. They also frequently pay for her food or give her extra gas money.

At least $10 per hour per child. At the least.
More if it’s a full time nanny type position.

That's definitely not a normal rate, but I imagine when you split time between various locations, it's very difficult to find childcare if you don't have a traveling nanny with you. So, it makes sense for this woman to make it lucrative enough that whenever she is in town, you granddaughter will say yes to watching the child. DS is 15 now but I think we paid $20/hr the last time we used a babysitter.

what would you pay to make sure your child was in competent and responsible hands? does this sitter know CPR? Heimlich? what to say to first responders in case of emergency? knows simple first aid? knows how to use a fire extinguisher? is gentle? kind?

My daughter's never were interested in babysitting, so not sure what the going rate is. But my daughter's boyfriend occasionally babysat and got around $15-$25/hr. depending on the number/ages of kids. That was about 6 yrs. ago though.

Sounds like she wants to make sure she’ll drop everything to be at her back and call when she’s in town.

The mom in question didn’t ask those questions of my DGD. To my knowledge DGD hasn’t had that training but she is very articulate, smart and she would know who to call. Plus they were at the hotel all day playing in the game room, pool and other activities the hotel provides. The staff at the hotel knows this woman and child plus my DGD. I just thought $600 was overkill.

I pay $30 an hour for someone to watch my 4 (ages 4, 6, 9, 11). Back in CA I paid more like $40-50 an hour.

When I was a teen $2-$3 an hour was what I was paid. Baby sitters didn't set the price and it wasnt hourly- the parents asked if you wanted to sit and then they paid you at the end of the evening. I would say for 8 hours with a child under 3, I would probably pay $100. For older, more independent kids, less.

$20-40 per hour. I would suggest she take an online first aid course.. it is not hard and will give her some tools.

I have not used a teen babysitter but college-aged babysitters here would start at $20/hour at least for one kid.
When I was a 13-year-old (circa 1984) I got $1/hour and even less for overnights, which, in retrospect, was (1) insanely low even then and (2) insanely weird even by 80s standards to have an eighth-grader babysit your kids for the weekend.

We pay $20/hour...not for a teen, but a regular adult (previous daycare teachers). We will also buy dinner if they don't plan to bring any over and will either drive them home or pay for an Uber if it's far.

I’m curious about this too. My kid just took an all day Red Cross babysitter’s training class which included basic CPR. She said most of the kids in the class were 5th graders. I think around here most teenage sitters get around $12-15 an hour, more if there are multiple kids. We almost never did anything without our kid because sitters were so expensive.

Younger DD gets $20/hr when she sits for my students in the fancy neighborhood around our school. Rates are likely a bit lower elsewhere. She also has her own transportation so parents aren’t on the hook for that.

Holy Cow; that's crazy!!! I'm a grandma, so out of the loop. And none of my kids leave their kids (my grandkids; 13 of them now!) with anyone except family. They either take them, don't go, or leave them with family (which is there a lot of). At first I didn't get it, but I do now. Too much shit happens to kids you don't know who you can trust. Actually I take that back. One of them had a couple nanny's but they came from reputable agencies with background checks and references, and they also work from home.

I live in a town with rich people.. so the standard wage is at least $20 for any job.. so babysitters get more.

Rich people pay the oddest amounts. My 24 yo DD does some dog sitting thru Rover.com. She had a client who asked her to come to the house one time on a Saturday, let the dog out and spend about an hour at the house. That's it. No walking the dog, no spending the night. They paid her $30, which on Rover was the rate for 2 dogs, so not extravagant. But, when they got back to town they sent her a tip through Venmo for $300!!! She texted them to make sure they hadn't added one zero too many. They said, no, they meant to send her $300.
