I would like one but there’s not one coming anytime soon. We have an older dog that is really struggling so I don’t think we have much time with her but we have an indoor cat that’s 4 and dog that is 2. We got the puppy (during Covid) hoping that she would learn from the old dog but it completely backfired on us. She is sweet but insane. And everything is covered in pet hair no matter how much I vacuum and sweep.

When my 15 year old dog goes, I am done with pets unless my dh dies before I do.

I'm kind of there now- we lost 2 dogs two years ago, one suddenly and one after months and months of intensive health care needs. We have two dogs now that are getting older and we're starting to deal with health issues with them. Once they are gone I just don't think i'll get another pet for a good long while. They require more care than children and with traveling full time in hotels i'm with them 24/7. It's a lot.

I’m down to one dog, and when she goes I want to travel for a year or two. So I will be dogless for that time, for the first time in pretty much my whole life.
My cats ive arranged for my daughters and mom to take while I travel. I travel quite a lot with my dog but want a year or two without a dog to really take off.

I'm so sorry for all the losses you guys have had. It is nice to know I'm not alone in feeling like taking a pet break though. I have one cat left at my house, he's 11 so hopefully I'll get a few more years with him. If a kitten were to randomly walk up to my door I probably wouldn't turn it away but actively seeking out another animal has my brain rebelling after all the stress and grief.

We took a 2 year pet break after our boxer Molly died. I just needed some time after losing her. ❤️

We did after dogs and cats died. I was happy being pet free. DH was not. He took over all care of the 2 cats we now have -except visiting the vet. That is still my chore.

When our current dog is gone, I feel like I want to take a break. I would like to have possibly a year of not having that pet responsibility. I don't know that hubby will go for that long, and who am I kidding, I may not make it that long either, but I do want some sort of a break. He already knows if we end up with a puppy, I do not want to be potty training in the winter so that will help with setting a time frame hopefully.
I know we will always have dogs. After my parents last dog was put down my mom swore off no more animals, it was too hard when they lost them. Within less than a year they adopted 2 from rescue. She'll now say she knew she wouldn't be able to go without, but at the time she was dead set against it.

I have always been a dog owner. Had a couple dogs growing up as a kid. Then once married we always had 1 or 2 dogs in the house.
Now that my kids are all grown and out of the house and our last pet (Pixi a chihuahua) passed a few years ago we decided no more pets for us. We live a bit outside of town so having to run home daily to tend to the dog (once the kids were all moved out) became a chore. It is nice not having to worry about this daily. We are also enjoying the freedom to travel without having to make arrangements for the dog etc.
Both of our DD have family pets - my grandogs - so when I need some puppy love I go see them. We also keep the dogs when our kids are out of town so we get our fill of them a couple times a year.

I’m a pet break failure. When my last dog was in his elder years, I was SO ready for a break from the daily incontinence, paranoia, dementia, pacing in endless circles, etc. I told DH that after the current pack had passed, I needed a break. Yeah, no. I had an appointment set to take my Jack Russell in on Dec. 28th and on Dec. 19th my BFF called telling me she was fostering a 15 month old rescue toy poodle. On Dec. 22 I ended up taking the rescue home and DH has never let me live that down.
Then our old lab passed and we were down to just the poodle for probably 6-8 months. We ended up adopting another rescue lab and this one is even more nuts than the last one (who was also nuts). After this we probably will be done for good.
