All I hear now is Mom's having epidurals for birth. I never had one with any of my kids. I know I had a local numbing injection for the first one (episiotomy area). I remember my husband looking at that needle with a side eye (and he can handle anything). I have no memory of anything for pain on the second, and the third one barely made it to the hospital, so I didn't even have any labs done. LOL But young Mom's that i talk to are dumbfounded. I said I don't even have a memory of one even being offered. I also had 1 ultrasound ... for all three pregnancies. Only 1 done on the last one to find out sex. This was all early 90's. Which is eons ago!  |

My oldest is 27 - and I had one with her. My middle one is 25 and she was too quick to get one. I had my youngest at home with a midwife - so not then either |

Yes I did. I got it at 1.5 centimeters displayed with no regrets. I had a wonderful epidural experience. Due to some issues with how my son was responding to labor they wanted me on the monitors 24/7 and I wasn’t permitted to walk around or get out of bed so I figured I might as well be comfortable.
The cervical checks they make you have are a lot more pleasant after the epidural.

First 2 I had a birthing center with midwives, 3rd I had in hospital but nothing with any. Only reason I had him in hospital is because it worked better for us to be able to do tubal the following day. Otherwise I'd have had to wait until post 6 weeks and husband would've had to miss work etc.
But I have Harrington rods in my spine so I can't have a epidural anyway. With the 3rd I had to sign papers that I understood if something happened I'd be totally put under vs an epidural and awake.

I had preemies. W/my first it was too far along for an epidural and it was agony, despite how short labor was and how tiny he was. W/my 2nd I was in the hospital on bedrest and as soon as my water broke I asked for an epidural. I only felt one contraction. It was great. Childbirth is joyous. Why ruin it w/agony? Those are the famous words of my OB,at the time.

I had one. No regrets.
They don't give out awards for enduring childbirth without medication. Whatever an individual woman wants to do is her business. There's no right decision here, just a personal one.

My kids are 25 and 18. I wasn't offered an epidural, but I'm sure if I had asked for one, I would have been given one. Well, not for my second birth, because it progressed way too quickly. Childbirth is joyous. Why ruin it w/agony? Ha! I love that! |

My oldest, 25, induced labor w/ an epidural
2nd, 21, labor was too fast, barely made it to the hospital, no drugs
3rd, 18, arrived at 37 week appt 8cm dilated, water broken, epidural administered, but it didn't really take and was like a half-epidural.
Had an initial 11-ish week ultrasound and big 20 week u/s with each.

My first baby at 30 years old was a textbook Lamaze delivery with nothing but patterned breathing to get through it. I did have an episiotomy but don't remember the pain of it.
My second was born less than two hours after I arrived at the hospital and went so fast, I had nothing.
With my third I was in very active labor when I arrived at the hospital, but it all came to a screeching halt when I got in the hospital bed. Since my water had broken, they ended up giving me Pitocin to stimulate contractions and whoo-wee, that ended up causing such strong contractions I was almost passing out. They offered the epidural and I jumped at it.
I was 40 years old when the fourth was born. I went into labor early and was pre-eclamptic. The epidural was clearly the way to go.
TL:DR -- natural childbirth with the first two - epidural with the last two

For the first one I wanted one but it was not offered at the military hospital because they did not have an anestheisiologist available. It was terrible. I was determined to have one for baby no. 2. Yes I was able to get one and it was a totally different experience. So happy it was available.

Well this was in the dark ages, but no. Saw the doctor that afternoon and baby was supposedly due in 3 weeks. Went into labor at a restaurant where we were celebrating my dad’s retirement- that night. Barely made it to the hospital. My doctor arrived in his tuxedo and no anesthesiologist was on duty, so no epidural, the blocking they tried failed and I tore. I had an 45 minute labor. And people wonder why we only have one child.  |

Absolutely. I joke that I preordered them (I would have but that’s not really a thing 🤣). The first was 21 years ago, 2nd was 12 years ago (that one was induced). Had a spinal headache after the 2nd but I’d still get an epidural if I were to do it all over again.

I had retained placenta with both babies so delivered them(no pain relief) then had the epidurals to remove the placentas unfortunately. It was the only thing I had wanted to avoid but I didn’t have a choice at that point.
This was 28 & 30 years ago.

Well I had an OB reach into my uterus and pull out kid #4 by his feet through my vagina, so pretty glad I had an epidural for that one in particular. I don't enjoy thinking about what that would have been like if I could have felt it more clearly.
But I gave birth five times (one set of twins), and I had an epidural each time. Almost didn't make it with #6 because it was about two hours from my first contraction to her birth, but I managed to get it. I have a tilted uterus and every kid was agonizing, agonizing back labor, except for #2, who was almost two weeks late and was induced; I had them put in the epidural before they started the induction, and it is the best birth memory I have.
I'm also pretty thankful for ultrasounds and prenatal testing. My twins are identical and had some twin-to-twin transfusion such that monitoring them closely was important; my youngest two were born when I was 40 and 43, so it was pretty great to feel confident that they were developing well despite my advanced maternal age.

Yes on all three of my kids. My daughter had one with her baby. My mom had it done with me and my sister. We are all healthy normal gals. |

I did but it wore off and then got a shot to numb the area to be stitched back up after. It was a long birth with hours of pushing he was sunny side up and stuck. Vacuum didn’t work so they used forceps hours after the dr thought I had given birth. He had checked snd things looked good then he moved on. Luckily my MIL finally said hey the fetal heartbeat is dropping the nurse was useless - my first one was great but her shift ended snd the next one wasn’t paying attention.
ETA son is 19. They weren’t sure if I would be able to deliver or have to have a c section due to placement of fibroids. In hindsight I wish I had just had a c section.

My daughters are 30, 28, 25 and 20 and I had epidurals with all 4. So, also early 90s - I didn't know anyone who wasn't offered epidurals then. I had lots of friends who didn't want them, but I was "insert that sucker right here, baby!"

Three births- three epidurals (although they did the middle one so late it was mostly without it)

#1 - natural except for a local afterwards for stitching up
#2 - epidural at 11am after 11 hrs of labour...she arrived at 1113, lol...hardly worth it...and tbh, I feel like the backpain I had for years afterwards was related
#3 -I got IV drugs at 420 after 15 hrs of labour...and she arrived at 434...they made me SO loopy

I had one with my oldest but it made my face and upper body numb so they had to stop it. I ended up having a C-section several hours later and they did some other kind of anesthesia. I had c-sections with my other three as well.
My sister just had a baby a few weeks ago. She got to the hospital at 7:50. They did an epidural shortly after and she had the baby 10 min later. I was wondering why they would even do the epidural at that point.

I had an epidural because I was a scheduled C-section. I was a AMA mom with several complications so I had weekly ultrasounds in the last few months. This was 1999.

No. I was hopeful that I would with my oldest but he was born about an hour after we got to the hospital.
I figured that I knew that I could do it without,and my youngest was born at home.

I didn’t with either of mine. I went in not wanting to pay for it and hoping I could do without. My labors were very fast, even the pitocin baby. I have no regrets. I certainly don’t judge and may have wanted one had circumstances been different.

With my two boys I had nothing (1999, 2001) --- no epidural, no drugs whatsoever as I had a very short labor with both.
With my daughter (2004), I had an emergency c-section and I was put to sleep before anything began.
