Earrings! I always get a pair of earrings from our trips. I know where they are all from and I love having the fun memory of being wherever we were at the time.

Smashed pennies in the US, I have a couple of smashed coins from Europe, but seldom see them there.

What are smashed pennies? My guess is that it is the penny you put in a “printing” machine, pay a pound and turn a handle and the penny comes out with a print on it. I had one from the World Trade Centre in May 2001, the print showed an image of the twin towers on the smashed penny. Unfortunately I kept it in my purse which was later stolen.

What are smashed pennies? Yes to what joelise said. Here is a picture of the machine from Wikipedia. An elongated coin (also known as a pressed penny or smashed penny) is one that has been flattened or stretched, and embossed with a new design. Such coins are often used as commemorative or souvenir tokens, and it is common to find coin elongation machines in tourism hubs, such as museums, amusement parks, and natural or man-made landmarks. The collecting of elongated coins is a branch of numismatics. Elongated coins are also categorized as exonumia

Mostly pictures. Sometimes ornaments or a piece of pottery. I bought Nick a leather key chain that has these round token charm things that we can order for destinations to add to it. I buy the charms for the leather keychain from The Wander Club. I'm guessing that's where get yours. I have charms from each country and each National Park we've visited. We also buy ornamants and postcards. I put the postcards in my scrapbook. kckckc I LOVE the idea of buying bookmarks and displaying in a bowl.

I’m not a huge souvenir buyer. Islands? Usually rum.
The only place I really get something specific is Disney. I collect their glass Mickey head ornaments (think typical Christmas ornament, but 3D Mickey head in shape) and then usually a park exclusive Pandora charm.

We buy Christmas ornaments. It's always fun to put them out every year and remember our trips as we decorate the Christmas tree. We take a lot of pictures and I have been buying Mix tiles to make a photo collage. Mix tiles are great because they are easy to remove and replace with new photos. If our sons find a t shirt that they like, they like to buy that as well.

also ornaments, and my DD has started travelling and bringing back ornaments.
on another note, i get each kid an ornament each year specific to their interests and it's the gift they open christmas eve. my tree is getting really tight - but remind myself that when they go and start their own households, i will pack up their boxes of ornaments - so i can keep buying ornaments.

I have a wad of keychains... its probably 2 feet long but its in bunches... like 1 trip could get 5 or 6 keychains.. depending on where we go... I love it... keychains are cheap n evey place has them... ive been collecting them since i was a teen... I like flipping thru them.. brings back memories of places ive been and who i was with.. a smile to my face every time.. Easier then magnets or shot glasses I started on my honeymoon doing a christmas ornament every trip we went on but sometimes it was hard to find one so then i started buying a keychain and i take the key ring off and then turn that in to my "ornament" its a fun way to look and see all the places we have been. I just got a new label maker that will print on ribbon so at somepoint i want to make a ribbon with the place and date of the trip so we have it memorialized.

I should add that when I say 'it depends where I am,' it also depends what I already have. I won't get 2 shot glasses from the same city, for example. I go to Seattle once a year, and we visit different areas of the city / different tourist destinations (I still want to go to the Museum of Flight) every trip. I don't think I got anything at the Mariners' game last trip, so I will this time.

Magnets. They go on the beer fridge in the garage
ETA - my husband also collects golf balls from our travels. He has a couple of racks to display them
