I don’t get the allure of daylight at 7:30 or 8:00pm either. It goes against the natural sleep pattern.
Give me standard time. I hate light evenings with passion.

I love DST. Longer evenings and it suits my circadian rhythms. Our state voted to stay on DST, but apparently, the vote means nothing without the approval of the House and signed into law by President Biden. I just don't want to keep changing.

Other - I like both like we already do it. Fall back in Fall and spring forward in Spring.

Standard time. I hate waking up in the dark. Plus, your days get longer in the summer no matter what. Even here in Southern California, it's light until 9 PM in the middle of the summer. I know it stays light much later than that in the North. Do you really need daylight after 7:30 or 8 PM? Yes. The sun heads over the mountains at 3 pm at my house during standard time. It is dark about an hour after that. I guess this is all relative to where you live, but I think having the sun shine when I am not at work is the most important to me.

I don't understand how people don't get it Isn't it nice to eat outside...to have a glass of something in the 'sun'...to feel like there's still 'day' left even after a day at work? Maybe it's because it reminds me of being on holiday/vacation when we eat later, outside, chatting and relaxing.

Thanks for responding to the poll and for the responses, everyone. It is a pretty even split, but just pick one seems to be common across the board.
If we have to change I am a proponent of Daylight savings time. I am also one that doesn’t understand how other people can’t understand why I want light longer into the day.
Maybe it is dependent on where people live? But I love summer where after dinner you can still hear people outside and kids playing and it is light. It is great that people can go for a hike after work; people can walk along the waterfront after dinner; people can go for a quick swim. I love that it is light for all that play in softball leagues, that play pickup soccer or basketball games, want a quick game of croquet, cornhole, or whatever. Just the option of being able to eat and then go back out and enjoy the night for awhile more.
We often can see farmers and other agricultural people out later doing task that need to be done. It is safer driving later in the evening as moving animals (deer, moose, etc) can be seen.
Daylight savings time gives people who work during the day a chance to partake in all the fun summer activities after work and dinner while we have warm weather. More people are on vacation and certainly take advantage of the long days of daylight. I know that we certainly do with our camp.
So I think my take from this is that no matter what about half the people will be disappointed with the choice between DST and standard time. However even if they are disappointed with the pick most will be satisfied if they just pick one. 😄
ETA - the only two summer activities that I can think of that are negatively impacted by later daylight hours are drive-in movies and firework displays. 😆

I prefer to have that extra light in the evening. I leave for work in the dark no matter which one we choose (5am), but I love having daylight later so I don't feel like I'm missing the sun.

I don’t care, just pick one and stick with it. I’m on the Eastern edge of my time zone, so it gets light earlier and gets dark earlier than those on the Western edge. I’m an early bird, so that’s fine with me.

It's not a matter of not understanding, it's a matter of sometimes other things matter more. I grew up in NW WA. As a kid, I loved summer nights when there would still be light in the sky, reflecting off the bay until 10PM. But I am not a morning person. My natural time for my body to wake up here in Mountain Time zone is 10AM standard. So for the last 2 days I've been waking up at 11AM and by the time I'm dressed, and mentally functional, the day is half gone as far as other people are concerned. That ends up being more important than end of the day relaxation.

So many trails to hike, lakes to paddle, dogs to walk, chats to be chatted. We don't have the extreme heat many places have, so the daylight hours are perfect. Maybe some people just aren't outdoor people or head to somewhere in their house where the daylight doesn't matter.

I can totally understand what people are saying about liking more light at night, but where I live it stays light until close to 10:00 pm in the summer. I’m a night owl and even I don’t need it light outside until 10:00 pm. After about 6:30-7:00 the bugs start coming out so the closest I want to be to “outside” is my totally screened in porch. The bugs freaking LOOOOOOVE me and I hate bug spray so I end up getting all chewed up. No thank you. Even with DST the sun comes up at 5:45 in the summer which is still way the hell too early for me. I have blackout blinds on my bedroom window at home and they’re freaking awesome. When the sun comes up at the lake cabin it bounces off the water and straight into my bedroom. I told DH I wanted curtains or blinds that would block out 100% of that light in the morning because my side of the bed is where it comes straight in and I don’t want to get up at 5:45 on the weekends. He didn’t want that (but also didn’t want to switch sides with me, go figure) and we ended up with about 80% light blocking curtains. I can still see it coming in. It still wakes me up. I hate it.

Other. I'm okay with DST, but wish they'd put it in place later in the year the year. I dislike starting daylight savings so early in the year. I feel like we're just seeing Mother Nature's signs that spring is coming---it's lighter both earlier in the morning & later in the evening (where I live, anyway), and we enjoy that. It's nice to sip your morning drink and watch the sun rise. BUT, if we did without DST at all, then the sun would be up VERY early (for me) come the summer months. Sunrise is already at 5:30 then, with DST, so the sun would be up at 4:30 without it, which would be something I'd definitely need to get used to . But, if pressed to choose keep things as is or get rid of DST completely, I'd get used to 4:30 sunrises and get rid of it completely. Especially since the whole sunlight thing varies so wildly from one place on the planet to another---that to me, spending time & energy messing around with one single hour seems a little silly.

If they pick one I hope for the love of God they pick daylight savings. I need the extra sunlight in the evening. We all count down to it here on Long Island. I absolutely hate when it sets at 4:30 in Dec/Jan. It makes for the longest, dreariest Winters.

Daylight for sure - I love it still being light out at 9:30 pm and it depresses the heck out of me to have it be dark by 5pm in December
I'm not out & about early morning anyway so doesn't matter to me how light or dark it is at 6am

Other. I'm okay with DST, but wish they'd put it in place later in the year the year. It used to be one month later, in April. And then it used to end one month earlier in October. It took awhile for me to get use to Trick-or-Treating starting when it was still light out at 5PM. As a kid, we would go out at 5 and it would be dark already. The darkness to me signaled the start of trick-or-treating.

I'll be honest, I'm 40 and still don't know which is which. I just know I like it when it stays light late. I HATE when it's dark at 5:30pm.

I feel like it went from 5/6 months to 4/5 months of standard time. It made me happy.
