I started singing some patriotic songs to my little ones, like It's a Grand Old Flag, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Oh Beautiful, Star Spangled Banner (All 3 verses)... and thought, "does anyone know these songs any more?" What great songs to sing and pass on.

My DH and I have been singing "God Bless the USA" this morning. It's not a classic, but it might be someday. How about "America, the Beautiful" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee" too? And a good Sousa march is always appropriate on the 4th of July!

I just posted this in the Happy July 4th post, but I learned all these songs in elementary school. I also learned, and have been singing at top volume this morning, all the traditional military songs like "The Marine Hymn" (the Halls of Montezuma,) The Caisson Song and a couple of others. They DEFINITELY don't teach those anymore. LOL The Marine Hymn

In honor of today;
"God Bless The USA"
If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life And I had to start again with just my children and my wife I'd thank my lucky stars to be livin' here today 'Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away
And I'm proud to be an American where as least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me And I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA
From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee Across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA Well, there's pride in every American heart And it's time to stand and say that
I'm proud to be an American where as least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me And I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA

I teach the classic patriotic songs in my classes beginning in 2nd grade. If you want your kid to know the more recent patriotic country ballads, you're on your own.

My grandfather was born on the 4th of July and we always gathered together to sing "Born of the 4th of July" to him. My fabulous cousins (of which we are many) still get together on the 4th, only on Facebook now, and give a shout out to a first generation Irish American who, after his father drunk himself to death, stood up and became the man in the family at 14. Went out to work and took care of his brothers and sisters and went to Georgetown and became a dentist at 30 years old.
I love the songs!

At our elementary school, the kindergarten has a concert every year where they sing the classic patriotic songs, including Grand Old Flag. So, in our neighborhood at least, all the kids do!

Since I can't carry a tune, I don't sing - for everyone's sake
