You have to find a cashier who knows how to use them. You have to say you want to do a split payment and put $x amount on this card with x being the exact balance of the gift card. It can really be a pain in the ass, but it can be done. I don’t like those gift cards, either. I know that you are correct. As mentioned above, I simply don’t shop in brick-and-mortars anymore because I leave for work at 7:30 am and don’t get home until 6 pm. I will grocery shop in-person on Saturdays ( at Costco, BJs, or TJs), but everything else is online (including delivery for groceries I forgot). It was my birthday this past week and I wanted to treat myself to some goodies we couldn’t normally fit into the budget and was just frustrated to find that I couldn’t use the gift cards that I had saved. I also know that this is TOTALLY a first world problem and that I am looking a gift horse in the mouth. Very much a selfish vent on my part. Will your Costco not take them? Their website says they take all Visa cards (I have the Citi Visa through them) including Visa gift cards.

I used a $75.00 Visa gift card recently against the total when we took the whole family out for lunch. The cashier applied the GC, then told me the balance of the bill. I calculated the tip based on the total and added that and then put the balance on my Dividend Visa.
One thing you have to remember (in Canada, anyway) is that if the card is initially used after one year of its purchase, Visa will deduct $3.00 a month off the total of the gift card. Depending on how long you wait to use it, you could end up with almost nothing!
If I am ever going to buy a GC for anyone, I choose either an actual store that I know they like, or Amazon.

I have a stack of visa and American Express gcs with barely any balance on them. I hate them.
I refuse to buy them as gifts.
Unfortunately you’re stuck with them . The grocery stores used to let you buy other gcs with them but not anymore.
I hope you can get your lands end order. Maybe call their customer service and order through them.

Maybe use them on groceries and then use the money you would use for groceries on the swimsuit? I am grateful for them but sometimes they feel like a chore. I have a few in my wallet right now. It would be nice if visa would allow me to transfer the money to my visa debit. This is what I do too. I would love a gift card though. We got a $75 dollar one for a tire rebate and I used that one at two stores and spent that money on scrapping supplies.

I'm surprised that you're saying you can't use them online except for Amazon. I've used them online. I have also partially paid for something and paid the balance with my normal card. This is from the US Visa site: I had $1300 worth of gift cards that could only be used at a supermarket, cheap department store, and alcohol store. I wanted to use them to buy an Apple gift card to put towards a new MacBook, but you can't buy a gift card with a gift card. (I wish it was $1300 worth of Visa gift cards!) So I am doing exactly what you suggested. I am using them to buy groceries, then putting the money that I would have used for those groceries into a savings account. You can use them online but generally not as a partial payment which was what was causing the issue for Elaine because she has three different cards she wanted to use on a single purchase. Say I have $52.85 in my online cart and I want to use a $50 GC toward the purchase. When I put in the GC account number, the online cart kicks it out because it won’t cover the whole amount of the purchase and it tells me to use another form of payment. If my total is less than $50, it will work but then I’m stuck with a GC that has some oddball amount left on it.

THANK YOU for this thread! I've been collecting VISA gift cards for YEARS (my boss gives them out each year for Christmas) and I did not know I could use them at Amazon. I just uploaded all of them and used most of them already.

visa gift cards are not my favorite either. when i get them, i load them into my amazon account so i don't have to hassle with finding out who does or does not accept them.

I think I did that once One is a Walmart Visa, one a vanilla visa and one a Mastercard gift card. So, sadly no. That was part of the problem too. Can you add them to Amazon and buy Land's End gift cards from Amazon, then use that to buy your swimsuit at LE? Yes, going around your arse to get to your elbow......but...... Thank you! I did that. Thank you all for your advice and input and for listening to me. It was a purely selfish vent on my part.

I had no idea they were hard to use. I thought they would be the easiest type of gift card.

I’m glad you got your swimsuit. Your issue educated some of us to the fact that Amazon will let you buy other gcs with them.

I had no idea they were hard to use. I thought they would be the easiest type of gift card. Like so many things that sound like a great idea, then the implementation somehow ruins it. Reality needs to stop smacking us in the face that way--it's rude. Sigh.
