Oh they would have a meltdown with the Native American museum here, there’s topless women everywhere. And we even have senior prom there. My daughter's prom was at the Dallas Museum of Art. Of course, there are nudes all over the place. I also chaperoned field trips there. It's astonishing how quickly our country has gone nuts. The geniuses complaining about this have clearly never taken their kids to a museum. It's just ignorance begetting more ignorance.

So when we were running errands this afternoon, we were following a truck that had a "Man Cave" sticker on the back window and some sort of plastic scrotum hanging underneath the car below the bumper...and so I immediately thought of all of you and this thread. So is that pornographic? Apparently, they are called Truck Nutz, and I've been living under a rock all these years.

When my sixth grader stood about 5 feet away from the Venus de Milo, he only noticed yet another statue without arms. That was his concern.

I accident voted yes. Fat fingers but, no, it’s art and was presented as art.

I do think that maybe late elementary/early middle school is too young to go as a group to see something like that, only because (as someone already mentioned in this thread) the kids are likely to go crazy and talk about nothing else. Which detracts from the rest of what they saw and could be talking about. lol. Maybe it would depend on the kids also...But the other day I was subbing and had a pull-out group of five 4th graders. We were reviewing sight words (these kids are very much below grade level) and when I said the word "but" they burst out into giggles and snickers and it took me a minute to get them back on target. I would imagine that the image of naked David would have pushed them right over the edge. hahaha
But of course it's not pornography.

I did think the Yes votes were by folk wanting to have a laugh and see the thread explode with objections, but now there are 4 . . . . (less the one who said it was a mistake above).
So is a man stepping out of the shower and asking his partner to pass him a towel pornographic? At what age is a naked child considered pornographic or is a naked body pornographic from birth? I feel an idiot just typing that because the notion IS idiocy.

Hold on, this isn’t a completely accurate statement. It’s very much more specific and nuanced than your statement. Spousal rape is a crime in all 50 states. Citation, please? Thank you.

Ummm…your own article that you posted? I don’t think you fully understand what it says. Your article says that marriage is a defense to *fourth degree* sexual assault. It is NOT a defense to first degree sexual assault, second degree sexual assault, or third degree sexual assault. Do you know what all those things are?

I honestly can't remember if I am another with fat thumbs who voted yes by mistake. It's possible. artbabe I think I may have read the same article as you re: disproportionately small penises on many of these statues, and I tend to think the article is accurate. I recall as an adult talking to my mom's best friend who did nudes, and took a lot of art history classes, and the convo came up. Ah, the joy of courtesy aunts with whom you can have convos that you might not feel comfortable having with your mom, even at 15ish.

For the people claiming “fat fingers,” um, you know you can see your vote at the top of the page and change it if it’s wrong?

Umm, yes, we all know that you were an attorney. While marital rape is considered a crime in 50 states, 30 have exceptions.. If you want to elucidate on the law, please do. Just saying "Hold on there" and questioning my personal understanding is unhelpful.

Making broad, untrue statements like “marital rape is legal in Maryland” without bothering to try to understand the nuances is unhelpful. In fact, it’s harmful. You don’t need to get all snippy with me asking for citations when the truth of the matter is you don’t understand what you posted and you don’t understand what you said.

It would be difficult to teach mythology without nudes as well. Luckily I am in Minnesota, teaching 11th/12th grade in a district that has yet to go bat-shit crazy. I do wonder if mythology would even be offered in some states. With just a tiny bit of critical thinking, it is kind of hard to take the course and not realize how mythology and "religion" are verrrry much alike.

I learned about Greek mythology in school. It wasn’t a separate class. I think it was part of one of my literature classes in high school or maybe junior high. Don’t remember when. ETA - I remember though wanting to learn Norse mythology instead of Greek, because I was more interested in Thor, Loki, etc. Yeah, I was into reading the Marvel comics back then. 🤣

It is offered as an elective for juniors and one of the senior literature required choices (Mass Comm, Humanities, Appreciation of Lit are the other options). We have five sections of it; it is quite popular. One of the first things I say is, "One person's mythology is another person's religion, so we look at all mythologies and religions from the lens of literature."

I took mythology in high school. In 1985. It was offered at the two high schools my kids attended as well. I’m guessing it might not be offered in states that have more right wing ideology, though. Like Texas, Florida, or any bible belt state.

So I did a little digging about this and found this article from the Slate that is an interview with the School Board Chair. He is claiming the principal was forced out for other things besides an art class involving the statue of David. But in reading the article, well it’s worth a read. If possible, I am more horrified. I'm glad to know that "even poor people have standards." The journalist should have pressed him more on the idea that if parents drive the education, why does he dismiss those who oppose him and asked that he step down.

From the article: "Well, we’re Florida, OK? Parents will decide. Parents are the ones who are going to drive the education system here in Florida.
...We’re not gonna have courses from the College Board. We’re not gonna teach 1619 or CRT crap. I know they do all that up in Virginia. The rights of parents, that trumps the rights of kids. Teachers are the experts? Teachers have all the knowledge? Are you kidding me? I know lots of teachers that are very good, but to suggest they are the authorities, you’re on better drugs than me."
Holy $*+.
I look around here in Florida and ask myself, "Do I want these people driving the education system?" Sure, Florida man should definitely be in charge.
This guy is exactly what's wrong with education. Drive away the best and the brightest teachers by treating them like robots who just spit out what they're told to instead of like professionals. Then throw them under the train, not just the bus, when parents complain. We won't even mention how scandalous the pay is.

Last summer we were in Italy, and got to see the Sistine Chapel. The guides said that someone was super offended by all the nudity and another artist was hired to cover all the genitilia (The breeches maker was his title, LOL). I am not sure if it was restored and the leaves and loinclothes were removed, but it seemed like Michealenglo won anyway, as he painted the guy who complained into a scene of hell. LOL

It is a stand alone class in high schools. Also incorporated in other literature classes. Middle school and high school. Every student receives some exposure to Greek Mythology. Myshelly can never see past their own life experiences. If they don't experience it they assume no one does.

Not wanting to put words in their mouth. That is how I read it. But maybe your post is agreeing with them and I am not understanding your post.

Well, we teach a smattering of Greek and Roman mythology in THIRD GRADE here in VA. I taught Greek mythology (just basics) last month and discussed the Roman names for the Greek gods this past week. 😂 Both are part of our ancient civilizations units and are built upon in fifth grade.
Not detailed mythology, but my 8-9 year olds know about Zeus, Hera, Athena, and a few others.
