57 and got laid off in May. Took two months "off" to enjoy summer. Collected unemployment and did search but was in no rush. Took a position at a non profit and so far really like it. Technically a step down, but no stress. No working at night or weekends. And the work I enjoy. I am happy for the change.

I'm sending you good wishes for finding a job that you actually like better! And I think it's worth pointing out that there are employers out there who like age and maturity in employees. My husband, for example, always says he'd "rather hire the old crusty civil engineers out there rather than the newly-minted ones."

Sending hugs and good vibes your way. It's so hard when this happens. Of course you are reeling from this news. I hope that you find an even better job quickly.

So sorry about your job. Wishing you the best and a quick turn around for a new job that you love.
I also want to add that many in the younger generation seem to change companies often/very quickly these days. You still have a lot of working years left so I think many companies would not see your age as the detriment that you think it may be.

My sympathies to all who are going through this...especially those over 50. I just went through it myself. I've learned quite a few things over the last few months, and I now have a job helping people find jobs!
If anyone wants any help with their resume, feel free to pm me.

greendragonlady do you offer this as a service? I reached out to a local company that does resume writing. Happy to support a fellow pea.

A year from now, I can't wait for your post that it was the best move ever. I'm sorry you have to go through this, though.

My position of 20 years is being eliminated effective Sept 1 and would appreciate any feedback you could offer. I haven't had to interview or look for a job in a long time...ugh!

We've been having budget issues for the past year at my employer, and they announced layoffs last week. A couple of people in my department have been let go (immediately) I heard today I'm being let go but they're asking me to stay for several weeks and wrap up projects. They're giving me a very generous package and most importantly extending my health insurance benefits which will allow us to change our coverage with DH's company. I'm just kind of numb. I figured this was coming, and have begun looking around. My job can be done as a freelancer, but I need the routine of a formal job. Part of me says you haven't been happy for awhile and this is an opportunity to change. The more cynical half says you just turned 50 is anyone really going to hire you? I'm sort of spinning at the moment. I got laid off a few months ago but started looking as I could see the writing on the wall. I'm 56 and didn't have trouble finding a new job. My coworkers average age is around 30, which is the same age as my DS. Don't worry about your age and I hope you find something fantastic!

Sorry, bumping this as it was a hard day today.
I'm still working, feeling like I'm flailing at getting a portfolio site set up. I feel like I can't DO anything until I'm done with my current position. I don't want to take on freelance work until I have the time, I've been trying to figure out wordpress but my state of mind means I can't concentrate.
Then today I get an email from HR telling me my "benefits in retirement" one of which is keeping my heath insurance. A benefit I knew I didn't qualify for. I called the person who sent me the email, and she was like no this is a benefit but let me check. An hour of thinking I might be able to keep my health insurance later she calls me back. I was incorrectly listed as retiring vs being laid off. So no, they're not offering me a crystal sculpture, going away party (both of which I would have politely declined) or health insurance past a certain date. She was extremely apologetic but man it was like a lift up, then punch in the gut.
Today just really got me down. It's not HR's fault, they're dealing with the after effects of the layoff and morale at my employer is at an all time low. I feel like I'm stuck and unable to move. People keep saying take time to grieve this, but I'm terrified of falling into depression and I can't linger too long without some kind of action.
apologies, I'm rambling. it was just a long day.
