At what category do you do this? The news has not mentioned doing this. We've never boarded up our windows, but we are about 45 miles from the coast. Typically it needs to be a hurricane to board up the windows. It's not something you see much of for tropical storms IME.

I forgot that we put boards or plywood over the windows so that the windows would not be blown out or debris blown into the home. At what category do you do this? The news has not mentioned doing this. I have no idea. I have not lived on the coast in 50 years. I think a cat 1 would not have you doing that.

I teach in Capistrano Unified (south Orange County). First day of school was the 15th. At the end of the day on Friday, students were encouraged to clear out their lockers because of the rain. Everyone was sent an email saying they are monitoring the weather and the priority is helping children safe. Most rooms leak at my school with normal rain. We will get updates tomorrow afternoon.

Cat 4 or 5 in path for a direct hit. Even then many don’t. Hurricane shutters on the coastal houses. When Florence hit it was really hit or miss how many people boarded up, and or stayed put, and those who evacuated. And to a T everyone we knew said they’d do the opposite next time. We evacuated. Our next door neighbors stayed. Their house was so damaged they were out of it over a year after. We’ve since moved away from NC. Sure hope for safety for all in the storm paths.

San Diego Unified delayed opening until Tuesday. Haven’t heard about any of the school districts in the county. One community college is closed, but another one is open. And both Cal State San Diego and Cal State San Marcos are going virtual for the day.
