I got the mini Empress because I wanted a smaller footprint and I already have a cuttlebug which works pretty well. It's hard to crank for me though (dang arthritis!) and most of my dies are small so the mini Empress has been great. EXCEPT those stamp sets with dies and the flipping upside down. Thank you to everyone for your advice. It's been going much better. Even though I thought I was taping well, I don't think I was taping the die well enough. Plus for the really finicky ones that are tiny I will cut into the magnet mat. I would love another magnet mat but don't see them anywhere (even annagriffen.com) just alone. It's the whole set or nothing. This should help. annagriffin.com/product/empress-mini-magnet-mat/

I bought the regular and I have the mini, regular and large plates for it. I always cut into the mat unless it’s an intricate die. I find the mats last a really long time as well as the plates. I mostly just stock up on new mats from Anna Griffen. But it’s about 5 or 6 months before I have to replace one. For intricate dies I use the following sandwich: clear Plate Die face up Paper Metal shim Magnetic mat Clear plate That’s the only time I cut into my plates. I love how all my dies stick to the magnetic shim and I rarely have to tape. When I do tape I use the e.CZ highlighter tape. It never rips my paper. Same tape Jennifer McGuire uses.
