yup! nothing beats so cal beaches but bring your bag of cash. in so cal, you will need either lots of cash or lots of time (to drive to anywhere near a beach). getting a house 1-2 hours away may seem reasonable but not in so cal. for example, bakersfield is 2 hours away but the traffic coming into greater los angeles will kill you. the inland empire is barely an hour away from OC beaches but, again, the commute could take hours. if you want a true so cal "beach" house, you should be less than 10 miles from the shore or a 20 minute commute. we live 4 miles from the beach and you will need a minimum of $1.5 million for a very small house in the neighborhood. This I don't consider 2hr from a beach living at the beach. In So Cal you would pass through many cities on your two hour drive to the beach (even in traffic). I live 13 miles, 22 min, from the closest beach and would pass through 2 different cities to get there. I wouldn't describe where I live as living in a beach city. Well, when you live 8 hrs from a crappy brown beach, 2 hrs is nothing for us.

Would you ever consider another country? There are beautiful, affordable expat communities in Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Costa Rica. Not really. Mexico is a definite no.

Oregon beaches are beautiful. I was just in Astoria, Oregon in May and loved it. The town is very cool and if you drive 20 minutes you could have a house that feels like you are in the mountains. The plant life and moss on everything was so neat. We went to Cannon beach further down and it was so pretty. I’ve been to many of the beaches in Oregon and haven’t been disappointed. However, I haven’t been there during winter months. I have heard Alabama has amazing beaches. Astoria/Canon Beach are my dream retirement locations. I LOVE that you're close to Seattle, Portland, etc. Day trips to those places are totally do-able. Price wise? Hmmmm.... I dunno.

Within 1-2 hours of a beach gives you a ton of options. Personally, I would stay away from anywhere in Florida because I keep hearing all about their horrible insurance situation. You could find a reasonably priced placed within 2 hours of beach access in central California. That's still Bay Area with traffic the way it is. Beaches from Tracy (western central CA) are 2 hours away minimum with traffic. It takes me 90 min to get from where I live to Livermore with NO traffic which is a distance of 80 miles. With traffic, it's taken us over 2.5 hrs! Livermore is still an hour minimum from a chilly beach.

Or Salinas which is like an hour from Monterey. Going up into Oregon would be my first choice but I don't think there would be much as far as wanting 90 degree temperatures. What about the Carolinas? A couple of friends of mine just moved to Traveler's Rest, South Carolina which would be farther from the beach than what you're looking for but they have said wonderful things about the state.
